So, when do you think John Romero's legendary comeback will occur?

@Busomjack: Well, I hope your epic quest for superiority doesn't end into you being crushed by those others. I'd watch my step if I were you. Good luck.

He was a hack. He had one good idea, and he ran it into the ground. He's never shown himself to be any good at adapting to new ideas, and he certainly hasn't embraced any new programming languages. Frankly, Doom and Quake weren't that revolutionary, they just sucked slightly less than other FPS games of the time and sold better because it had gore. Games like UFO or King's Quest had less fanfare but greater impact on the way we play games today.

He never had any ideas on concept or design that weren't overblown self-hyping trash (final levels, god mode, all of Daikatana "DESIGN IS LAW!"). If he had an original thought anywhere in his head, he's already killed it. He was given more than enough opportunity to redeem himself but his ego ruined it every time. Let him wallow in the pit he made for himself.

I have a better chance of working for BioWare than John Romero does.

How can you be so mean to John Romero!?  Don't you remember how much of a star he was in the 1990's?  He basically took being a game designer and made it cool.  The Ion Storm offices were futuristic looking and he even hired his girlfriend to design levels of Daikatana despite having no experience with computers or the industry.  That was a bold move.
The guy even owned a Ferrari, how cool is that?  He had to trade in his Ferrari several years ago according to his blog but I think the man who created Doom, and Quake deserves to get behind the wheel of the Ferrari once again.

We owe it to John Romero to help him make a comeback.

I want to see Daikanata 2.

Indeed, I still have the issue of PC Accelerator where she is on the front dressed like a hot teacher.  PC Accelerator was a great magazine.

Why in the Hell do all game magazines have to suck these days?

I blame the internet.

Well the internet was around back then too. I think the quality of gaming magazines has just declined.

The internet has gotten a lot bigger though, and more insidious. I hear there are pornographic images on it now.

I say we get rid of the internet then. I remember the good old days where I had to go to the library to do my homework. Stupid internet is making things too simple and it's promoting laziness.

I remember a day when I had to look at pornographic images at the library. They didn't much care for it. I'm fine with the internet.

Your obsession on him is starting to be bit... spooky honestly.  Letting his inexperienced girlfriend design levels to big budget game he putted so much faith on? Worst idea I can think of, but then again I do not know her so perhaps she had good ideas, but with info I have now it was very bad move.

Driving Ferrari? WTF has Ferrari have to do with this? Actually knowing that gives me impression that he got too big ego for his own good, show-off with severe lack of humility. Yes, judging person from his car alone (if one can afford Ferrari then go ahead, its certainly a nice car) is bit superficial. But has he given reasons to not believe otherwise?

I have huge respect for the man for what he did in the gaming history. He even might have good idea somewhere in his brain even in this very moment, but if he is unable to make it real and do it PROPERLY (unlike Daikatana), he will only be a waste of time and money. He has simply been out of the loop for too long. Also he had several chances to redeem himself after Daikatana AFAIK, but screwed them all up.

Simply put, time has moved on.

Multi-billion dollar American businesses built upon the internet like Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon, not to mention the retail corporations that rely on the internet for communicating inventory levels and monitoring the supply chain use the internet for more than porn.
Not to mention that Bioware uses networking to simplify the workflow needed to get Mass Effect and Dragon Age out in a single-digit year time frame.
The internet is a backbone technology like electricity in that it is used for more than what you personally experience and getting "rid of the internet" is like saying get rid of refrigeration, running water and electricity because they make things "too simple".

Dammit I don't care if it causes economic collapse! The internet has got to go! Society functioned fine before it's existence.
Or maybe rather than destroy the internet we should give everyone 28.8K modems. Therefore the internet can have limited functions but no more high speed streaming for things like youtube or onlive.

I think John Romero's comeback is being inhibited by the fact that generations have passed in the gaming industry since his downfall.  The solution is to turn back the clock!

Also porn was MUCH better before the internet.  At least books, videos and magazines won't put viruses on your computer.

Public forums were also better before the internet (like in Greece). Personally, I like being economically better off. Saves me from, you know, hunting and gathering.

John Romero's mistake was letting his super hot girlfriend script for the game. I know she's a model John, but that doesn't mean she knows how to prepare arrays.

Also, YOU CAN'T LEAVE WITHOUT YOUR FRIEND, SUPERFLY!

That said, I am terribly disappointed in Randumb. Go read some history or get off the Internet.

Let's all just destroy everything that was made by working people... I mean... they are "lesser beigns" then warriors like us, right Busomjack:)? We should just downgrade till we go back in time where Samurai lived and we can play with our bullet-deflecting katanas:).

Was actually a great game.  You know, all you jerks who are trashing this game probably never played it right?  Well, I did play it.  I still have the original CD with the orange label that has John Romero's name on it and let me tell you the game was pure single player GREATNESS!

The only reason it got a bad review is because the gaming press at the time was jealous of John Romero's success.  They sought to destroy him!

John Romero may be down but he's NOT OUT!   Daikatana 2 will be the next Half Life mark my words.

Because so long as the resource exists, I must take advantage of it as a necessary evil lest my enemies will have an advantage over me.

May I suggest you swing your mighty katana and plunge it into the screen of your PC? It might work to fend off the evil of these forums, which are probably cursing you with a Weakness spell, so that all the precious time you spend at the gym will all be for nothing! Oh, the misery! Spare the innocence of your eyes!
