Which one is better to do first?

Does it matter, does one make more sense for the story progression?

i did Wending Woods first for the trade routes. so it's probably personal preference.

Yeah I did Wending Woods first too, now I am not sure which one to head off to?

I guess it probably doesn't matter I just like stories to follow the progression that makes the most sense.

Do Blackmarsh last since its bugged to have characters go through the joining if you do them last.

YOu get Justice in Blackmarsh, so how would that make a difference? Still one person not going through the joining.

Justice is already a grey warden, technically, he cant do the joining anyway, doesnt get the option. If you dont do blackmarsh last, Sigrun or Valenna cant go through the joining because of bugged dialogue.

You can do the main quests in any order and still bring all of your characters (except Justice, of course) through the joining - just leave the quest area after obtaining the new character and head to Vigil's Keep, then speak with the Seneschal. You can then return to that area and finish the quest.

I did this on my first playthrough with Sigrun and it worked fine, although it was certainly a little strange, as you don't have the Joining conversation with her until after finishing Kal'Hirol.

If you want a tank warrior, do Blackmarsh.

If you want your dw rogue, do Kal'Hirol.

Both have good plate sets, Kal'Hirol has a good 2-handed maul, but Blackmarsh has a few attribute bonuses for the main character.

When I started my Orlesian, I went to Blackmarsh first to get Justice. (I got him last in the previous game and wanted to spend more time with him this go-around so hence getting him first.)I barely had any equipment upgrades except for Blackblade armor (which Justice needed more than I did). The only issue I had was with the Queen of the Marsh. I had to come back for the dragon later when I had better gear and more abilities.

Since we are on the subject of the blackmarsh what is the deal there? I've killed everything that has attacked me, I see the tear in the viel, the locked gate that seemingly has not key, all teh dragon bones but two and I've run from one end to the other criss crossed back and forth and still I am at a loss how to get the gate open.

First, you get all but one bone before Krisstof's body and being sent to the Fade. Second, the locked gate at the mansion will not open until you have the key after killing the Queen of the Blackmarsh. Hope that helps. Posted Image

I got Justice first before Sigrun, but I can't seem to get her to go through the joining since when I speak with Varel, the Amaranthine assault triggers. Does this mean I have 2 redo two main quests to get Sigrun's joining?

if you want her to join you might but it doesnt really make a difference whether or not she goes through the joining the epilogue with her usually assumes she went through the joining

I do Blackmarsh early for the stat bonuses. But in order to get all of your party through the joining you have to do like another poster said and take the final companion (other than Justice) back to Varel before completing that last quest. I did Velanna last on my second play-through and took her to Varel before going into the mines. The dialog is weird at the end of the mine quest because she's asking to join the Wardens when she already has, but oh well. My first play-through I did Sigrun last and missed the chance due to jumping right into the end game.

My Question:  How do you get Blackmarsh to even appear on your map?

EDIT:  Right after posting that I happened to go back to the inn room and saw the map...go figure.  I bet if I wouldn't have posted this, I wouldn't have checked there  =P

As other people have said, if you want all of the possible characters to undergo the joining you have to either do black marsh area last, or bring them back to the keep before completing the main quest in the area you found them, which is kind of silly because they dont agree to become wardens until after you finish the main quest of the area you found them.

I am now having to redo my entire playthrough because I want all of them to be wardens... (I know it doesnt matter, just out of the principle of the matter) My first save isnt until after I had already gotten into the fade, of blackmarsh so I cant reload from there...

Besides the consideration of the bug of Joining, I think the Queen of the Marsh is a tougher boss than the one in the other 2 area, so I put Blackmarsh the last area to conquer.

The cool thing is you can pick up Velanna in the Wending Woods, leave, take her to the Keep for the Joining, and then come back and do the Silverite mines. Same thing with Sigrun and Kal'Hirol. I usually go & pick them up first. Although again from a dialogue perspective it is strange because they only *discuss* the joining with you after finishing the mainquest areas.

I always finish Blackmarsh first because you have to to get Justice & have a complete party. (Well, unless you don't particularly need a S & S warrior, perhaps because you are one. We know what happens to the other one.) I was doing the mines second to get its infamous "bug" out of the way. But like I've said before there's one other bad aspect to doing Kal'Hirol last.

Just about all your upper tier rune recipes are in Kal'Hirol. You might want to bump its priority if you're interested in tackling runecrafting (despite its kludginess).
