I want to be caught up on the backstory before I play but I'm curious about the 2nd novel -- is it also a prequel? Or would I be fine just reading the first? Seems like a lotta reading to get done in just a few weeks!

Yes, it is also a prequel... I would highly recommend it too. It was really really good, and provides A LOT of backstory and insight into the wardens... particularly Duncan.

First, it's not a lot of reading, The Stolen Throne is 400 pages long, and The Calling isn't too much longer.
Second, both novels are prequels, I enjoyed them both a lot. The Stolen Throne has more central characters, and is easier to follow, I think, but The Calling has a lot more lore to it, especially about the Grey Wardens and the Darkspawn. If you're going to buy only one, I would suggest The Calling due to it being more intertwined with DA:O's plot.

Well if I get 'em both on Amazon it's free shipping, so looks like I'll be getting both.

Yeah... if this is an indication of DA's plot (and I think it is) we're in for a treat.

For God's sake, David Gaider; write a third novel!
