We can thank EA for that, dare I mention the Sims franchise? Talk about cashcow. I'm upset we can't even talk to the companions. Instead of spending time on the weather, they should have spent more time on the companions. After all, we have to lug them around and make them happy. <_<maikel1977 wrote...
but as far as the game itself goes, this was clearly a cashcow pushed to make a deadline when instead they could have waited
Congratulations on making your deadline. Please miss the next one.

Awakenings is good but even if its only an expansion, its inferior to Origins in many ways. The story is very short, the gameplay has regressed into a simple hack and slash for the most part and the feel of the game is not what I was expecting.
Origins was a truly immense and epic experience with a rich and convincing world, filled with believable and well thought out characters. Awakenings seems to have none of these traits unfortunately. It feels rushed, the party interactions are far worse and the continuity between Awakenings and Origins is very sloppy.
Speaking from a characters perspective, knowing my time was limited due to the effects of the Joining, there is no way I would leave the women I loved behind whilst I trotted off halfway across the continent. She would come with me and so would my faithful hound. He stayed with you throughout Origins but then you suddenly ditch him when you set off somewhere else??
Plus the ending is just wrong. There's very few answers given as to what happens to your character. Seeing as though DA2 might be set in a completely different timeframe and/or country, I would have liked a bit of closure. I'm not saying I wanted everything explained but a bit more than what I received.

I had flashbacks to KOTOR II. Both great games, but not quite finished.
Good comparison.
I got the same 'this game isn't finished" feeling with both.

As for the plot, I loved the writing in the mico-areas. Blackmarsh, dwarven smith area (forget what it's called) and the woods all felt fresh and reasonably original. The overall plot was a little lacklustre although the conspiracy bit was nice. The characters were all pretty good, every one was interesting and I thought not having to talk to every single one of them all the time made the game pacing much better. It would have been nice to have some more continuity with DAO, the lack was probably my biggest complaint. Also some of the epilogue slides seem to be bugged, which although a small thing ends up being incredibly annoying.
Overall though very enjoyable. I'm impatient so quite pleased they got it out there nice and early.

All in all, I agree that the expansion was good and I enjoyed playing it. I would have enjoyed it more if the story didn't feel...rushed...like a badly edited Holywood movie.

More time would've been good. There was a lot of polishing that could have been done. As someone mentioned, though, games have become a business. Even 10 years ago, it wasn't as big a problem...but greed took over, and the publishers are 100% in control...and they have stockholders to appease. You just can't have fun and make a game, anymore.

I hardly call the wish to make an honest living and not miss a launch date greed. And while the latter may be an issue of skewed priorities (ie, product release on time vs. quality or content), I can hardly blame Bioware - and especially Melo and Baudoin, both of whom are in leadership roles on this project - for trying their damnedest to push a project to actually meet its commitment dates, for the benefit of both the fans as well as the higher-ups in EA. As a loyal fan since Baldur's Gate, I'm familiar enough with Bioware to begrudgingly accept that they'll never make a promise date (I was actually blown away that they met this one) - and while that might be okay to me, I have to imagine that Bioware's management would have to fight very hard with any publisher to justify slippages on the scale they're accustomed to - and that must be very exhausting indeed.
And while I can empathise a bit with all the EA hate out there (which, I suspect, is the real root of this, and many other, greed comments), I have a feeling that most (though not all) of it is coming from folks who are fortunate enough to not have had to work for a large, and largely faceless, organization. However, it is quite naive to think that EA - as well as Bioware - are not in the business of making games, and it is this business that continues to churn out fantastic entertainment of considerable quality and caliber - enough to make Bioware as a brand synonymous with depth of story and innovation. You couldn't do that without lots of money, friends.
Didn't mean to pick on you, darkstrikerds, or anyone else- just felt this needed to be said.

I had a rather strange glitch occur early on in the game: Just after arriving at Vigil's Keep, my character's arms got stuck in a strange position (it looked like we was doing the waltz by himself: one arm held out and up to the side, the other lower and to the side). It happened in both the cut-scenes and gameplay. It was so bad I couldn't even swing my swords. My character would grab them and just hold them in a strange manner while he'd run around. Pressing A (I'm playing the Xbox 360 version) did nothing at all, and his special attacks worked but he wouldn't make the appropriate animation/movement.
I just saved and re-started the Xbox and it was fixed, but I thought it was a rather glaring glitch.
That was the most obvious, I ran across plenty of others, so I have to agree...this game could definitly have been improved by a few more months of play-testing and fixes.
I got the glitch every now and then in Origins. All though all I did was save, re-load, and it would be fixed.
Another glitch I got in awakening is that my character would be hold Vigilance upside down. So I was swinging it with the wrong side up. It was kind of annoying.
