system

OS: windows 7

installed via disk

cpu: Intel® Core™2 Quad  CPU   Q9450  @ 2.66GHz clock speed 2665 MHz

ram 4gb

sound: Speakers (SoundMAX Integrated Digital HD Audio)
version of driver : 6.10.2.6180

video card nvidia 9800 GX2

DirectX 10

Mass effect 2 has worked fine for the past few months then after a crash I get a black screen on startup, the size of the mass effect 2 file is 11.4gb without DLC. I have tried reinstalling mass effect 2 multiple times and have updated all of my drivers but nothing seems to work.

One thing there makes no sense. The game itself is a Dx9 game, so it needs that version of Direct3D. You say that you are using Windows 7, but instead of the normal Dx11 that is part of that one, you want to try using Dx10. Show me some logic in that, will you?

Hmm, thats strange i just ran a DXdiag and it shows DX11 but the mass effect configuration tool shows DX10.

This is unbelievably frustrating, I've tried re installing it with other disks, reinstalled my video card, audio, drivers, my DirectX, Ive ran it in every compatibility mode i can think of, I've patched it, i have turned off my firewall and UAC, nothing works.

I have the same problem.

The weird part is that I played it foe a while and then it just stopped working. I don't understand the logic. i've googled for many possible solutions and none have worked. Every driver update, every changed setting, every reinstall, even different versions I downloaded to test them and nothing works.

Someone has suggested that at this point it's probably not the game that's faulty, it might be something corrupt in your OS.

When I get that error it says that some files in the "Appdata\\Local\\Temp" folder are to blame, so I'm inclined to believe it's an OS issue, especially after so many reinstallations.

One very popular quick fix is always to empty any "\\Temp" folders, because the files in them can result in conflicts. Give it a try.

I emptied the "\\Temp" folders and still nothing.

i guess I'll just have to reinstall my OS, unless anyone else has tried something that works

Well, there is an extensive thread which covers some of the crucial 'OS issue fixing' procedures.

Here: http://social.biowar...51638/3#1850589

Still, you might want to start from the last posts, namely, starting with 'sfc /scannow' and 'chkdsk c: [more options come here; look at that thread]'.

Tried what you suggested in that post. I ran "sfc/scannow" and "chkdsk".

All I didn't do was that "dxdiag" thing, and still no improvement. Any other possible fixes?

I just upgraded to the latest nvidia driver released today and still it won't start.

I think I'll try that DXdiag

You are aware that there are two "Repair" options as part of the OS ' install, right?  The second one is the one that for the most part carefully leaves your other software alone, and reinstalls on top of what you already have, replacing anything that became corrupted / damaged with pristine, original file versions (replaces everything but the registry).

Dudes, I just got the game working. You wouldn't believe what the problem was.

It was the Nvidia Physx program. No version of the game would work with any other version of Physx except the one that comes with the game.

I can't believe this stupid issue was causing the instant black screen on startup.

I started having this same problem after upgrading both my Nvidia drivers (which includes a PhysX update) and the ME2 patch.

Reverting to the PhysX included with the game did not help me (though that happened to me with Divinity II), but afterward reverting back to Nvidia 196.21 allowed the patched ME2 to launch and run successfully.

Strangely, Dragon Age had no problems with 197.XX drivers, only ME2. God knows what strange conflicts are happening between the Unreal Engine, Nvidia Drivers, and PhysX drivers to cause such a seemingly generic crash.

I take back my words. The driver version was purely coincidental. I am having random AWC.dll errors now.

I am having the same problem.  Can you please tell me what you did to load the Physx that comes with the game?  Thank you.
