I expected to really hate him after reading the Penny Arcade comic but once I got in game he turned out to be a very pleasant surprise. He has none of the slimy qualities of his father and it was clear after chatting with him in his cell he was unaware of his father's deeds. I let him live and it was an act of mercy I never regretted. My HNF learned from Zathrian, sooner or later you have to let go or it will kill you inside till there is nothing left but your need for hurting others. Once killing Howe, all her vengeance was gone. It was done and with sparing Nathaniel, she was taking a huge step forward in character development instead of wallowing in a petty need for revenge.

He and Anders are my core group. I don't really need anyone else but I usually take Justice along too for the conversation banter and extra tankyness. (My DW warrior is a Sherman tank despite not being built for it).

I thought i was going to kill him the moment i saw him, the trailers made it look like he would just spend the game saying how great his father was...i was very pleasantly surprised.

Nathaniel is a very cool character, he is naturally angered at his fathers death but when he learns about what his parent did he relents and starts to see sense. He is definatley one of my favourite characters, i havnt found much i like about velenna yet but maybe when i play with my dalish import ill see another side to her.

First time when I saw him, I ordered to hang him ( I played HNF). Don't know how to explain it, but when I saw how calm he was after death sentence, I regret my decision and re-loaded game, so I could took him to my team. Unfortunetly, becouse of new dialog system, I don't know him too good ( I had only one conversation with him next to Statue in a city, about his grandfather), but I think he could be nice companion..Maybe, when I will find more "dialog points" in next game I will have higher approval with Nathaniel and will know him better.

I hanged him on my human noble. He talked the same bull**** as his father so there was no other option for me. I just didn't like the "Hang him" option, there should be an option to kill him yourself.

I wanted to kill him and probably would have, had I met him later in the game.

As a Cousland, I conscripted him, even though at first I had my doubts whether he would stay loyal. He does come across as a jerk when you first confront him, but surprisingly he sees reason once he learns the facts of what happened. Plus, I got my vengeance when I killed Daddy Howe. Slowly. And painfully. Or so I like to think. So yea. I showed him mercy and don't regret it.

Finished my 1st playthrough with Orlesian Warden, who took all who he could under his wings. And to my suprise, Nate was actually quite cool character.

But my dwarf will not like him one bit. Nope.

I tried killing Oghren but there's no option... shame on you Bioware.

Nathaniel is a wonderful squad mate, remained in my squad from beginning till the end.

So if I let Nathaniel go, will he come back and join me willingly? Where and when?

Some sort of random encounter on the road. I forgot when, but it's quite early I think.

My Queen Cousland had planned on killing him as well but when the moment came, it just didn't feel right. I liked the irony that he was to become a Grey Warden and hoped his father turned in his grave. He easily became one of my favorites and he and Anders are my core group.

My Orlesian warden also spared him, he's a monster with a bow and arrow!

More specifically, Nathaniel will show up on the Keep > Amaranthine route. If nothing happens, then just return to the Keep from Amaranthine and it should definitely trigger by then. Traveling anywhere else, in my experience, just delays his appearance until you do the Keep + Amaranthine route.

As a Cousland, I had him hung. If he had not admitted to having plans to kill me and threattened to come back, I might have let him live.

I'll let him live with my elven rogue, though.

On my Cousland, this was the son of the man who murdered my family. Who he himself tried to kill me and openly stated that would do again if given the chance. He hung til his feet stopped kicking.

Yeah, exactly.  There was no way I was going to let him go and give him another chance.  If it were reality, doing so would be incredibly stupid.

P.S. I wanted to stab him in the prison cell, rather than hang him. LOL

I don't know if it was a bug but my cousland queen let him go with his families belongings then recruited him when he came back and was really nice to him, after allot of dialogue and gift giving i checked on his approval rating thinking wed be best friends and it was 87(love) which was a really sweet and sad moment for me that he loved her and couldn't have her since shes queen and never leaving Ali. I wanted him to confess the feelings so much in the game for the character development but it never happened so i thought it could of been a bug that he wasn't just a friend like anders.

But then i thought maybe hes too much a nice guy/gentlemen to confess and would just suffer in silence then cause conflict.

I hope so because I want to romance Mhairi and Velanna... definitely Velanna cause of Nathaniel ironically. I let the farmer live but I live to torment Nat... At least he is of a good sort about it.

So Mhairi doesn't always die in the joining?  I figured she was a throwaway character like the first joining.  Either that, or you're planning on a whirlwind romance! Posted Image

I want an option to cut off his arms and legs and keep him alive as a decoration for your fort.

I did not i actually had no hate towards him just saw him as somebody that needed to get his facts straight and get respect back to his family. Liked his character from the start the characters i actually hated was Sigrun, Velanna, Justice (only a little bit only because he would have tried to kill me for siding with the architect )

I really wanted to on my Cousland, but at the time I was thinking the joining was truly random (Since mhari died) and I took the chance

I listened to him, and although he seemed relatively innocent from his father's plots, I've killed him anyway. My sister-in-law, nephew, fathers and all the people the Howe's slaughered were innocent, too :P Not even after reading all the posts saying he's a "good guy" I've changed my mind. The other Howe was a "good guy", too, at that morning (my father's best friend), and a traitor in *that* night.

His father already knew what was in game when he did that movement. He did it and it *nearly* worked for him, and if it wasn't for Duncan, he'd have succeded and completely destroyed the Couslauds. He failed by mere chance, and he lost. So, if Nathaniel is anything to blame in the Veil, then I suggest him to go and look for his *beloved* father and blame him for all eternity. Or blame his bad luck, I don't really care.

Revenge is always served cold...

Like most of the people here, my HNF Cousland spared him.  Her thirst for revenge was sated with the death of his father, and she wanted to break the cycle of revenge/retribution.  I respecced him as a DW rogue and he turned out to be an absolute beast in combat--definitely in the 'A' team along with Sigrun and Anders.

Did this, and he was a pleasant surprise.
He is an  other good exception that don't judge somebody by his/her parents
On the other way, generally I don't like killing possible groupmates (I killed Wynne once, though, after several playthrough). What if they want to betray you later, or another interesting plot will be revealed if you let them alive? ;)
