No wonder so many game designers are abandoning the PC market. It's impossible to address all the problems that can occur relative to everyone's hardware and software configurations. I recently had a problem when playing the Awakening expansion, but I didn't call for the programmers' heads on platters.

That's just stupid. If that was true, PC gaming would had dissapeared many time ago, long before DirectX were released. In those times it was REALLY a mess to configure games to work on a PC.

Besides, PC aren't as limited as consoles, which allows programmers to do the games they want, and not to constantly worry about how many FPS the game will get on an old hardware like 360' one.

Not to mention I still don't understand how somebody can play a RPG with a gamepad...:?

You're lucky you could play 400 hrs.

I, and many others, am still waiting for them to patch the original game properly.

I STILL can't play this POS Programming(or lack thereof) since launch day!!

Finlay got Awekening yesterday and started playing right away. Installed Awekening and RtO and managed to play 20-30 min before my first crash. Had read all the issues before on the forum but just had to see them for my self.

So now comes to long wait for a fix...

It would be nice if they could at least acknolodge their mistake and say their working on it.

Couldn't play since launch? Are you using a Mac or do you meet the requirements or exceed them?

It's nice how they're "collecting data" on problems that had to been obvious.

Bioware end the BS, you ****ed us with the patch and Awakening. They are broken and most everyone would be forgiving if you just admitted it. EA pushes deadlines and there is probably a lot more to this that would show you in a better light but as of right now you released a broken product and have kept it hidden to not affect sales.

Pre patch after playing through on two chars, not one single crash. I stupidly installed the patch when it was first posted as available. After reading through so many posts I don't even want to launch the game now for fear of currupting my current saves. I may well back up and reinstall back to 1.02 to carry on with the vanilla game and just look sadly at my copy of awakenings gathering dust as I carry on playing glitch free. I feel robbed twice over- a potentially broken base game, a broken add on.

No way I'm going to risk my current game saves- of all my time and adventures so far- when I may end up with a bitter experience. :(

Guess I will  have to wait a bit longer. :(

Re the EA tech support: I wouldn't put any stock in what they say as far as the game being compatible with Windows 7. Good gods, even suggesting that you 'remove Win7 from your PC' would be laughable if it wasn't such a pathetic thing for a tech support person to suggest. Those guys are just 'drones' that have a script to follow for trouble shooting and likely know nothing about PCs other than how to turn one on and off. I seriously don't know why tech support for most companies don't automatically bump the user to the next level when they figure out you actually know what you're talking about and have tried all their stock 'solutions'. Ah, I'm ranting. Sorry.

Damn... I was very happy when I saw a patchnote

# Some players were experiencing increasingly long load times. A major cause of this problem has been fixed.

because my PC is enough ****ty to run out of memory after an hour of playing DAO and start laging. Now it takes about 10 minutes for game to eat 100% CPU and 100% memory. And crashes of course. THANK YOU FOR SUCH FIX!!!!!

1.03 is full of bugs...worst of which are causing games to crash....

Before this patch I was playing..could go on HOURS long stretches and not a single crash..nothing....I've put over 400 hours into this game (sick I know) with hardly ANY kind of crashing (crashed a few times..very few over those hours.)

Try turning off your Autosave feature (under game options menu tab) and the four options under Profile in your Online options menu tab.

tangent:

I tried doing that last night... guess what happened? Crashed and the options reset themselves. I think the game is posessed by a Hunger Demon :(.

The crashes seem to occur during combat. As others have said, they occur more frequently during magic heavy combat.

For what it's worth, here are my system specs again:

Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz

Clock speed: 2332 MHz Physical Memory: 3.24 GB

Display Adapter: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 -2147483648 bytes

Driver Version: 181.22

Sound Adapter: Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio)

Driver Version: 6.0.1.5624

OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Home Premium (64)

DirectX Version: DirectX 11 (Aug2009) or later

I also experience stuttering/lag during combat. It seems like an engine issue to me as my PC exceeds the recommended requirements for this game.

Can you give more specifics on magic? Did you notice what spells/talents are causing the crashes the most?

Ok, I'll admit to being a little annoyed at the OP's tone/attitude at first, but what you just posted there really does deserve some e-screaming. I got a new computer very recently and finally escaped vista- there's no way I'd go back to it!

I use windows vista 32 bit no crashes before 1.2 after 1.3 nonstop crashes that freeze my computer doing ANYTHING or even NOTHING in DA:O within minutes. It's the patch do not kid yourself if tech support says windows 7 they are throwing out BS answers to dismiss you so they can hide the fact they had a totally horrible patch / release.

Once again It's the PATCH!

Edit: The Broodmother of EA needs to send out more Bioware darkspawn dev's to work. What is this 12 days now?

I think I am going to try the 1.02a patch. I have spoke with Tech. Support @ EA three times today over these CTD's, the first guy said it is a corrupt game save due to the game being shut down improperly, tried to delete the saves, started over, problem still there, the second guy said that it wasn't compatible with Windows 7 and that I needed to downgrade to XP or Vista (like I am gonna buy another operating system to run a $50 game), and the third person, a lady, stated that it was "likely" a problem with Windows 7 being 64 bit, and that I should run compatibility mode, and she gave me a $15 EA Coupon for my "Troubles", when asked if the patch was the cause, she simply stated she could neither confirm or deny it because the testing hadn't come back yet." Needless to say, even running in compatibility mode, it isn't working, so it likely is a patch problem seeings how Tech Support has an unusually high wait time thru the live chat and the phone support.

We should all phone EA's tech support over this... that's a lot of $15 coupons to hand out.  Maybe if there's a financial cost to releasing a rushed, buggy patch, they won't do it next time.

You do have to give BioWare some credit.  They have been monitoring the tech support forum like hawks lately and are well aware of some of the bigger problems.  The issue is that fixing bugs takes time, and patches have to be tested extensively before release... it means basically getting multiple people to play through both the entire orginal game and the expansion, multiple times, to verify it doesn't break anything else.  It might not be the fastest way, but it's procedure... and normally it prevents major problems from slipping in due to patching.  The only reason it didn't this time, I'd wager, is due to the rush to get Awakening out, and I highly doubt BioWare had much say in that.

I'm under disillusions to the contrary. Heck, I'm pouring over scripts looking for things that don't make a lick of sense. What I do find sad is some people that have Vista install disks from a previous computer that don't know a lot about said computer would follow the tech's advice. I work on computers sometimes. If I ever heard one of my coworkers suggest that I'd headdesk FOR them.

I bump this thread because I am as frustrated as the OP.

Seriously, it has been quite some time since patch 1.03 has released. And I am still trying to finish DAO on my 1st playthrough.

I am also very disappointed with the lack of response from BioWare. When I was playing ME 2, I was told that the developers of DAO are more engaged with the community. So far, I am not feeling it.

It just crashes randomly during [magic] combat. I don't recall it ever crashing while exploring (can anyone else confirm this?). For me at least, it does not appear to be one specific thing that causes it to crash.

It's really infuriating - major understatement - especially when you lose progress during hard battles.

*Sigh*

They are when there's a run-up to a release as well as immediately after the game launches.  They come here for feedback and marketing purposes, mostly.  Things tend to go silent pretty quickly as the immediate benefits of participating in the community diminish.  However, EA does have people that monitor the tech support boards for bug reports and the like.  They don't speak, but they have definitely fixed bugs in the past that users reported.

Too bad. Some folks have said mana clash and holy smite are doing it a lot. Not so much with charging spells but instant ones. Ring any bells?

The patch don't work with DRM file. Causes serious crashes, or sp-called "misconfigurations". I have digital deluxe and awakening on disc. Stupid if it doesn't work like this, other games do.

The 1.02 patch works fine with DA:O 1.03 f*cks it up. Installing Awakening f*cks up even more. Now I cannot play any of the games, and have to download DA:O once again where I bought it. Thanks, Bioware/EA for letting me download DA:O 8 hrs again. Thanks. (Since back-up doesn't fix it).

Nice work. Who beta tested this patch?

I actually crash at any point, not only combat. This happens in conversations and just by running/sitting idle. I am not a big fan of forcing shut down on my new PC so hopefully we will get a patch soon to fix this.

PC specs:

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit

CPU: Intel i7 920 clocked @ 3.5 gHZ

RAM: 6 DDR3 @ 1600

GPU: HD 5970 w/ 10.3 Catalyst Pre-release drivers

Just hoping the specs help out getting the patch faster.

Agreed. I experience the crash any time any place doing anything. Crashing is not a matter of if, but when. I am not a fan of forced shut down either I would guess it is quite harmful to the hardware to do this many times over and attempting to play DA:O results in much lost time, having forced shutdowns losing data and I would guess now corrupting files somehow. Oh and the forced reboots have screwed up my Logitech G15 software ty Bioware.

I'm still laughing at the posts about experiences talking with tech support what a bunch of assclowns. Switch operating systems are you f*cking kidding me?! It says on the freaking box it is compatable with windows 7. Anyway just throwing another post out there to bump. This is really making me rage hardcore.

If the patch was this bad I can't wait to see how badly Awakening screwes up the story and such of Dragon Age.
Example: Oh hey so you like sacrificed yourself and killed the Arch Demon and died because you didn't have a demon baby with Morrigan. Well...you got better yep you recovered from death cool huh?
Oh so Alistair died in the first game but....he got better too yeah...super secret warden power you get to come back to life except only the pc and Alistair the other wardens didn't reach level 25 and unlock it.

/end other rant

This patch makes me

Yeah I'm really surprised how bad BW has screwed this game up.

I've played game since launch and have yet to finish it with 2 characters! The first one can't get past the Landsmeet because of freezing, the second one I just said "♥♥♥♥ It!" after freezing up during the fight in the Bar in Lothering.

Needless to say I will NOT be buying the expansion until they can actually fix this game.

Thanks for offering a possible solution, but my system exceeds requirements by quite a bit, and I'm VERY cpu/tech savvy.

Bottom line is I'm not one for playing a game that crashes every 10 - 50 minutes.
It ruins the immersion/atmosphere and, quite frankly, is just not good enough for a paid product.

It's broken programming. I've tried the 1.03 patch but that made things worse.

Till Bioware focuses on fixing what people have already paid for , and not on trying to rack up more sales with the expansion (which is causing even more probs), I'm just going to let this game (which I'm sure is great) sit on the shelf.

My confidence in Bioware has been severly shaken since their merger with dollar grabbers, er I mean EA.

One thing that I noticed, is that you have some very very very old drivers installed on you Vid card.  You might want to update those.
