Yes and no. As a game it was nothing special and everyone knows it, but it was pretty much one of the last PC games that truly pushed the computer to its limits in hardware, forcing technology to go forward and making real use of it. A true PC game.

Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.

Everyone said it was among the greatest games ever made, i had to buy it!

And... i know it's personal opinion, but to me, Oblivion is so... boring. Almost to the point of being sleepy. -.-

I agree completely.  After playing Morrowind, I couldn't wait for this game, and I enjoyed it at first but I slowly started to see how generic and boring it was.  The plot was mediocre at best, and virtually all the voice-acting (sans the celebrity actors) was dreadful.  Couldn't hold a candle to any Bioware game I've played, for sure.  It certainly did not derserve the success it got.

Why would you compare it to a Bioware game?  They're both WRPGS, but they do different things.  Oblivion is all about giving you open environment to explore and play around in.  Everything else is mediocre (cept Combat).  It wants to immerse you.  Bioware games are all about the story and the characters, but you get a game that is deceptively linear.

Really? So I suppose it won all those awards for being meidcore then.
I wholeheartedly disagree, Bioshock changed the FPS genre.
I also have to disagree with all the Oblivion-bashers, that game had me hooked for at least 3 months if not more. Just the freedom it gives you, the lore and custom content made it fun. Generic, hardly.

I'll just pull the overrated games that I listed in the other thread.
Halo
World of Warcraft
Deus Ex
Mirror's Edge
System Shock 2
Final Fantasy VII

I wholeheartedly disagree. It did not change a damn thing.

Was it a welcomed addition to the genre? In my opinion yes but it did not change it.

I enjoyed playing it though I prefer to play Farcry than Crysis, but I have to say yes, Crysis is overrated. Speaking of Farcry, the sequel is overrated, imo and I didn't enjoy playing it compared to Farcry and Crysis.

As much as I love Bioshock, it didn't change the FPS genre. BS is
toned-down version of System Shock 2. I see you listed SS2 as an
overrated game. Well, you're titled to your opinion but strange how it's
overrated when BS heavily borrowed elements from SS2.

BioShock wasn't anything revolutionary. It just proved that brilliant gameplay alone doesn't make a great game, IMHO. The story was the best bit.

Bioshock is a watered down System Shock 2.

I suppose the console user-base wouldn't be use to such games and give it more credit than it deserves.

I bet the next Dues Ex is a watered down action oriented game with terrible Walt Disney massive UI, regardless of what the Dev's are saying, and probably garner more critical acclaim, due to everyone being, very, very, stupid.

They already got that type of Deus Ex with the sequel,  Invisible War aka Deus Ex for dummies. I really hope they do a better job on Deus Ex 3 but part of me thinks they won't.

Why close this thread? People are making good discussion about what they think is an overrated game. Just because you don't like people being disappointed by FFXIII, doesn't mean this thread should close down.

People can be disappointed or not in any game they choose to be -
there's already a thread on this topic, and repeat threads get closed.  By midday Monday or so this thread will most likely be closed.  I put the link to the last thread that was this topic earlier.

Halo

While I love Bioshock, it really didn't change the FPS other than to give an Action RPG twist to a FPS, and it wasn't the first to do that.
What makes Bioshock most cool is Rapture and the whole Ayn Rand vibe.

But I quote the above because it's funny.  You may not enjoy Halo, but it revolutionized FPS's AND almost single-handidly made the XBOX a success.  It's hard to overrate that.

I didn't enjoy Gears of Wars AT ALL, but it's another game that has changed FPS's.

Bioshock?  Not so much.

Still a good game, though.

I may be wrong about this but, to mine eyes I think the OP just wanted to continue on with their tirade about Final Fantasy.

Quite honestly i don't hate FF, i am just curious to know what games people think are overrated, there are hell of a lot of other overrated games other than FFVII or FFXIII.

EDIT: What about Call of Duty 4? I personally don't think its overrated and i did read some where that it is considered revolutionary in a sense that it shifted out of the done to death WWII setting and delivered one of the most intense FPS game at that time.

Kind of the same way VI which was 2d shifted to 3d in FFVII or GTA2 in 2d to GTA3 in 3d.

Worded it wrong (alcohol speaking). Didnt mean it literally (as that would be stupid) but it setted a new corner stone for what PC games are capable of when pushing the limits. When it was released not too many had computers that allowed to play it (though some if was bad optimisation) as it was meant to be played- Even today on highest settings it provides a pretty good challenge to your PC.

Vanilla, yes. Modded, muuuuch better. B) Though not on par with Morrowind, not by long shot. That game was epic as hell.

Ofcourse it's better modded, It's the only way to play the game. The modding community isn't supposed to have to do the developers job though...

And it is a silly point. It is pont that anyone who does not like something that many others enjoy uses. Just like movies, music, and books games come down to personal opinion. To each their own and all that.
But no matter how hard you try you can not deny what WoW did for the genre. I am no fan of MMO's but there is not a MMORPG before or after WoW's release that has even neared the number of subscirbers. THe only one to show a constant growth of long term subscribers would be EVE online.
Like it or not Blizzard once again made a enjoyable and addictive game that set a new standard for that genre.

Sorry, but.. isn't this thread obviously about personal opinions? I thought that was pretty clear. That's why my entire point was made with *humor* - it's clearly a joke meant to lighten up this epeen fanboy thread.

Of *course* everyone has their own preferences - no where in my post did I even remotely imply to the contrary. I find it kind of funny that you're insinuating that my preference is silly, then you preach about how everyone is entitled to their own preferences, though!
;)

The topic is about what we think the most overrated game is. To *me* that is WoW. I could care less if you enjoy WoW or Toon Town or Farmville. My point is that numbers alone prove nothing.

But seriously. Lighten up. =]

Actually, can I add Morrowind to my list?

That game straight up bored the heck out of me and I tried multiple times to like it, too, after (for the most part) enjoying Daggerfall.
And I enjoyed Oblivion (more or less.)

Eh, Morrowind isn't overrate though - it's pretty low on the radar.  It has some pretty fervent fans, but it's not like Deus Ex or Planescape: Torment.<_<

Diddnt the Halo series win a whole heap of awards and score consistently high scores as well? Yet you lump Halo on the overrated pile (not that I dissagree with you, Halo's sequels were highly overrated) dispite it winning a heap of awards and yet say Bioshock is great because it won a heap of awards? Do you not see the flaw in your logic?

I have already posted on page 1 why Bioshock is overrated but you are going to have to explain your logic here because you dont make any sense, how did Bioshock change the FPS genre? If anything it was a FPS in its barest form and apart from adding a few plasmids the game did nothing to change the FPS genre.

Deus Ex

Now that is just a bunch of crap, if anything Deus Ex doesnt get the credit it is due. Deus Ex was released far ahead of its time, instead of having the player charge head first guns blazing like most FPS games released at the time Deus Ex forced the player to think about what he was doing and find other ways to approach the situation.

To this day I have not found a game that offers the same experience that Deus Ex offered, sure Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines tried to emulate the style but comparing Bloodlines to Deus Ex is like trying to compare offal to steak, Bloodlines was the poor mans Deus Ex.

I didn't like Bioshock. The environments were too linear, the game was too easy and the weapons were unsatisfying. The art direction was good, I'll give it that.
I didn't even care much for the story. I don't think there is anything particularly interesting about Ayn Rand or her fictional male counterpart Andrew Ryan. Rand didn't contribute a single original idea to political theory, she's just an apologist for anarcho-capitalism, big deal.

I just wish they'd add System Shock 2 to Steam or Direct2drive.  It has been too long since I've played that masterpiece.

This one would argue that the whole Final Fantasy series is overrated.

This one agrees, even though this one is a FF fan who only hates 6 and 9, the rest are peachy. My relationship with 11 is love/hate (nearly 5 years before I gave it up at last). The series as a whole tends to get way too much hype.

And I adored 13. Ah well.

Still agree with ya, though.

Ah yes 11.. the good times online. I left because i realized it was a waste of time and remember those "HNM LS" that would camp in the same spot for days just to snag a NM?

Jeez what lives they must have if they stay in one spot for so long, they are either horribly overweight or so skinny that they start pumping steroids into themselves to keep their muscles from collapsing.

But the 4 deserves the greatness.. except Lost and Dammed... I didn't like that one. And that was the one they recommended (more than Ballad of Gay Tony which was comical and colerful!)

San Andreas was the best one.

GTA4 took itself too seriously, removing everything that made San Andreas so great.

Halo. The whole series is overrated. Its a crap campaign added to a good multiplayer that they havent changed for 9 years.
