My eyes must be screwed up because from what I can see my previous post didn't have any words in bold. If it's in bold then it must the strawman that did it. He's always trying to undermine me.MerinTB wrote...
If it was meant as praise, you are right it's not the best. What you wrote, up there in bold, read to me as being extremely saracastic and dismissive of me - as in
"MerinTB is a fanboy of JRPGs, so ignore what he says about these western RPG's"
And hence my reaction.
I doubt it was intended as praise, but if it was, my apologies.
Most overrated video game ever.

Now I dont care if you dont like the game but you cannot call a game
overrated if you havent played it or dont know how to play it. To this
day there hasnt been any FPS games that have offered the same experience
as Deus Ex, now days it is mostly linear rush in guns blazing games
that dominate the FPS genre. Ever since I have played Deus Ex I have
been looking for another game like it but none have come along.
For a game to be considered overrated (and this is almost entirely subjective call, meaning it is basically opinion) means for it to get more hype or praise than it deserves.
My saying that Deus Ex or Planescape: Torment "get more praise than they deserve" is based on what I said - "Too many people bring up the latter two games as if they were the gospel
on CRPGs and shoot down those who dare to even suggest they didn't play
them. It's gotten very annoying."
That's not me saying the games are good or bad -
it's saying that people, like you, who claim that (paraphrasing) "the only reason you can dislike Deus Ex is because you played the game wrong" are annoying. Why can't someone dislike Deus Ex and still have played it right?
Would it help you if I said the biggest hurdle to me even trying that game is that I don't like modern warfare games, military games, or spy/espionage games? Deus Ex always struck me as some kind of FPS / Action RPG hybrid that was grounded in a near-futuristic miltiary/spy story - it's really not my thing. I don't like FPS as a general rule, and I don't like military/spy/guns games.
There are some glaring exceptions in stuff like Mass Effect or (yes I'm going to say it) Halo, but there are usually specific reasons for that (Halo is more space / sci-fi than military AND I played 1 and 2 with my bro-in-law on cooperative the whole way through, and THAT made the FPS aspect bearable - plus I loved driving the vehicles while he did the killing, so...)
Deus Ex (and the others I listed) may indeed be grand examples of their genres / styles - but no game is so good that is deserves people telling others "if you didn't like it, there's something wrong with you" -
that statement makes those games (and ANY games) overrated.
Way to take my comments out of context, first of I never said "if you didn't like it, there's something wrong with you" I said that nearly everyone I have seen who bashes the game either hasnt played the game (like yourself so you have no clue what you are talking about) or doesnt know how to play the game and expects it to be a straightforward rush in guns blazing FPS. If you can show me one person who played the game the way it is supposed to be played without cheating and actually got passed the first few missions and still did not like the game then maybe I will accept their opinion as valid, but until then people like you who have never even played the game or people who dont even know how to play the game have no buisness commenting and no right to say that the game is overrated.

Ummm what? When you say ME1 are you refering to Mass Effect or some game I have never heard of? Deus Ex and Mass Effect are two completely different games and are nowhere near alike, there is simply no comparison to be made between the two games at all, have you actually played the game or are you trying to take the mick?
Oh wait your talking about Dues Ex, my mistake. Never played Dues Ex nor even heard of it for that matter but as you say it must be amazing for you to like it so much.

1 - I never said you said that "if you didn't like it, there's something wrong with you" - you could be a little less defensive
I said -"Deus Ex (and the others I listed) may indeed be grand examples of

People, not you. I was speaking generally of people who say "this game is awesome, you are stupid." If you see yourself in that word "people" that is your problem.
I said that nearly everyone I have seen who bashes the game either hasnt
played the game (like yourself so you have no clue what you are talking
about) or doesnt know how to play the game and expects it to be a
straightforward rush in guns blazing FPS.
2 . I haven't bashed Deus Ex once. If you consider me saying that it is "overrated" due to people claiming it is the greatest game ever and anyone who disagrees with them is wrong is bashing the game itself, that's your problem again. I never once commented on the quality of Deus Ex other tha to say it may indeed be a grand example of it's genre.
If you can show me one person
who played the game the way it is supposed to be played without cheating
and actually got passed the first few missions and still did not like
the game then maybe I will accept their opinion as valid, but until then
people like you who have never even played the game or people who dont
even know how to play the game have no buisness commenting and no right
to say that the game is overrated.
3. I have as much right to qualify a game as overrated as anyone else does, but thank you for trying to exclude me because I haven't played Deus Ex (or played it properly.)
You completely ignored the part where I said that I don't like the genre of game that Deus Ex is, and there's nothing compelling me to play it as I won't enjoy it because I won't enjoy the subject matter. I'll add to the list I gave before games that are about terrorists and games that are cyberpunk.
Deus Ex is NOT a game for me, no matter how well designed. So you'll have to forgive me if I choose to judge whether or not a game is overrated based on my criteria of the hyperbole of those praising the game as opposed to the gameplay itself. After all, the bigger component of whether a game is "overrated" is how the game was "rated" not how good the game was.
This wasn't a "what's the worst game ever" thread. But continue your fanatical postings, your claims of me taking you out of context when you seem to have a limited personal understanding of how TO take things in context, and such an apparent fetish relationship with Deus Ex that anyone not bowing before it's altar must be irrelevent. You just prove my point and make me feel all the stronger that Deus Ex is overrated.
Defend it again with more attacks on me. Make it more overrated.

to MerinTB: Idk whats that douchebag's problem is but I definitely didnt take offense to your point of view. I however, loved Dues Ex when it came out as there was no other game like it (IMO). Dues Ex 2 however, sucked... once again My Opinion. if Opinions killed on this board we would all be dead i guess.
I accepted long ago that Deus Ex is a great game for the type of game it is. The overall quality of the game didn't really weigh into my listed it as "overrated" - nor did my dislike for the topics and tone of the game.
The reactions I received are EXACTLY why I called it overrated.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! I think we'd all be happier if there was at least one great game out there for every player, at least one that really satisfied them.

And who is telling others "if you didn't like it, there's something wrong with you"? I have seen nobody claiming that "if you dont like Deus Ex you are an idiot" and considering that your argument to why Deus Ex is overrated is because of your claims that the fans say that "if you dont like Deus Ex you are an idiot" your whole argument falls flat on its face as what you say is utter nonsense.
In fact I am not going to even bother arguing against your other points because they are all the same as the last. As I said I dont care if you liked the game or not, this is personal opinion but to say that the game is overrated is a complete and utter lie. The game deserves every bit of praise the fans give it.

as far as i'm concerned, there were only a few noticeable changes to combat: unarmed attacks upgrade (punch to strong punch, jab, etc), the IFF perk from Fallout 1 was integrated into normal combat, and the companion combat settings (which didn't exist at all in Fallout 1).
otherwise it was pretty much the same as in Fallout 1.
Sorry, that was a mistake on my part. I meant to say the encounter design. There *were* the occasional really large fight in F1 (Adytum comes to mind), but F2 has a lot of random encounters when you're stuck waaaaaaiting for all the players to take their turn, more "dungeon" type areas where you fight off exciting things like Pigrats. I like the turnbased combat in both but I don't think they did a good job of designing encounters for it in F2 (the companion settings were a much welcomed improvement though).

Every mario game after the SNES - Its the same exact story/gameplay/characters for 15 years in a row, yet it still gets amazing reviews? Way to support developer laziness.
Bioshock - Now don't get me wrong... it was ok... but it certaintly isn't GOTY worthy (or even a contender for it) imo

ah, yes. agreed then. but the game did have a "fast combat" option, which made NPC movement play at triple speed or whatnot... attacks played at the same speed, but waiting for 50 rats to move was made less painful by it.
