Hello Dragon Age and comic book fans

Our fine friends at IDW Publishing are giving our Dragon Age Community an opportunity to ask the writing team behind the Dragon Age comic book (Issue #1 now available on iTunes and PSP. On store shelves March 31. Check the BioWare Blog for details here: http://blog.bioware.com/) questions about the upcoming Dragon Age comic book, Dragon Age in general, IDW Publishing, comics in general and more.

This is your chance to ask noted author Orson Scott Card, writer Aaron Johnson and BioWare's Lead Dragon Age Designer Mike Laidlaw your questions on what will be one of the hottest comic books to come out this year.

Please ask your questions here. All questions must be submitted by Monday morning March 22, so I can gather them and send them along to IDW Publishing.

So get to asking. :)

[To any of them] What advice would you give to a Game Design major student for writing dialog/quests that is natural and not terribly stiff?

What made you come up with such a deep story line for Dragon Age? One that allowed you to explain it over a span of at least three known games?

Can I be written into the game as a minor character who has The Book Of Faces, a magical item that allows me to find anyone in the world?

Question too Mr Orson Scott Card,

Seeing this isn't your first comic ( Mavel being the Ender series), Does this mean you will be working with future developments in the creation of future games within the Bioware frame? I recalled rumors with chair being the developers for " the battle room" but could this mean a RPG system of say Battle school in a general sense?

or

are you just exploring into the game development field in a expansive sense? As a avid reader of your series, all your books, I hope your political views do not play into this, seeing as within the past you have not mingled the two views into your work. Which I have to commend you on, as I know politically your an outspoken person, and yet seem to hold no topics of the kind within any of your books.

Regards

Sam Bahrij

To Orson Scott Card:

How do you feel writing a comic about a game that endorses homosexuality even though you are out spoken against it?

To the publishers:

How do you feel losing subscribers because your writer is a bigot?

Will the comics be available in Trade Paperback form? Or better yet, Hardback?

Or, better yet, a simular style to DC's Absolute Editions?

I'm sure there's a lot of fans here that would pay very big money for nice editions, myself included!

When has any of his works within the literary field, or even the game field slandered gays? yes I agree hes an outspoken activist, but Oddly it doesnt effect his work... ever think maybe its his status forcing him to support his religouse views ?
But I mean, by all means kick up dirt in the wrong field. if you wish to question such areas, post in a loction that is aimed at that field!!!!

I have a question for OSC:

Having spent so much time in the literary field writing novels and short stories, and then branching out into writing comics in recent years, what are some of the major differences you've encountered as a writer?

To Orson Scott Card: Do you see yourself getting involved in the game writing side of things and would you find it challenging writing branching conversations with various possible outcomes.

This one to David Gaider if he gets involved: If other writers with a significant and long writing career were to get involved in the Dragon Age mythology, how would you feel about sharing the creative process with them. Or would you prefer to have some control over the final product to maintain your original vision and world cohesiveness?

Will not buy another Bioware product.

Not even halfway kidding.

Goodbye.

But, well done on getting someone with name recognition. The fact is, you'll probably attract more people than you'll repel.

Why was Oghren chosen to have such a large role in Dragon Age: Awakening over characters like Zevran and Leliana?

He's writing a comic about a game that support homosexual activity, Mine is a fair question.

I was going to buy this comic until I found out who was writing it, I will not support a bigot such as he. I know others share my feelings.  How is my second question not fair to the publishers?

How many comics will there be? Will these tie in with Dragon Age: Origins or any of its expansions and sequels?

You can always buy Card's books second-hand. He's a wonderful writer and I enjoy reading his work, I just won't directly support him. These comics, however, I am willing to buy first-hand.

I want to second the question: are the comic story lines canonical?

And to modify one of my own: What was Mr. Card's desire to work on Dragon Age? What inspired him to do so, and what references and influences of his does he wish to show in the work? Almost every work has some sort of influence on it; I'm wondering what his will be for Dragon Age.

*shrugs* Seems kind of silly. So lets just have a litmus test for all writers? Lets find out how they feel about gay marriage/abortion/religion? I think trying to ignore an author for expressing his/her views outside of his/her work is troubling. Free speech and all that jazz.

Support is a strong word; I wouldn't say that the game supports homosexual activity (then you'd have Zevran saying stuff like how much better a male Warden is at pleasing another man, and similar sentiments from Leliana vis-a-vis female Wardens). The game does condone gay activity and portrays it in a neutral manner, is what you're trying to ask.

While Mr. Card has written several (surprisingly) positive gay characters, the first question you asked is valid. Could be more diplomatically phrased, though: how does Mr. Card feel about the outspoken gay readership of Dragon Age and the way gays are portrayed in the universe?

Indeed, I agree with Red, it seems to be a slightly flamish comment :?, But then again, we are all open to point of view.

Mike: Dragon Age is a great step in the right direction for Bioware, as its their first in-depth RPG since 2003's KotOR. (Though I do like Jade Empire and Mass Effect despite their being lite.) Can we hardcore RPG fans hope that Bioware has more in-depth games in store for us, or was Dragon Age the last lion?

Is it just me or are many of the questions in this thread far better directed to the game designers than to Mr Card? (the ones about game mechanics and such)

Well, they're presumably aimed at Mike Laidlaw.
