I hope Priestly edited out the firefight over Card's views which I won't name.

Oh yeah, censor legitimate concerns.

I hope I can say that I am disappointed in Bioware's descision to work with a founding member of the hate group NOM without being censored. Because I am, and I won't be buying the comic book.

Luigi Pirandello was an Italian writer as well as Fascist under Benito Mussolini and he still a won a Nobel Prize for Literature. Ultimately, one's belief system (even though it may affect his/her writing) is irrelevant to the author's artistic ability or eloquence.

But is is relevant when it comes to who will buy it. I and several other people here have made it clear that we would not support a bigot.

2. Who says there are gay characters in Dragon's Age? Zevran's not gay, he just likes sex, with anyone, and pretty much anything. If gay people are claiming Zevran as a gay poster boy, does that mean that gay people don't believe in love? Zevran doesn't, he just bleieves in sex. As for Leliana, she is not gay either, she can be bisexual.

Branka is gay (after being married to Oghren i would also be, and Orson Scott Card probably too), and Wade and Herren are also gay (confirmed).

Sierra has a legitamate point when it comes to keeping an aesthetic distance, judging the art and not the artist. I've seen plenty of reviews that offered the comic some sense of quasi-praise, but ending their review with a disconcerted sigh, disagreeing with the author choice, and his involvement--which I think is perfectly acceptable, as it doesn't attack the art, and the artist as a package, but critiques individually.

Please stop. This is not the thread for that.

Oghren is my least favorite of all the companions. On what basis was he chosen to stand out in Awakening? You'd have done better with Zevron or Leliana. Might as well have used Shale. That's how interested I am in having to deal with Oghren again.

Orson Scott Card,

Are there pigs up high in that sky with you, Orson Scott Card? Way up high in that sky with the pigs that fly, Orson Scott Card?

Oh wait, Orson Scott Card, one of the pigs is gay! He turned the sky red and made us all dead, that he did, Orson Scott Card!

--

Alternatively, will you consider at least engaging with the community about it's concerns about your bigotry or just push them under the rug?

Don't try to force your beliefs on others and don't curse someone for theirs.

"Homosexuality as an acquired characteristic linked to
abuse or molestation in childhood" is ignorance and prejudice though.

Why should we, the tolerant, tolerate his ignorancy?

If you truly are "tolerant" than you tolerate someone else's opinion becuase that's what it means to be tolerant. Calling a person ignorant because they hold a belief that you don't agree with is intolerant. Why should you, the intolerant, tolerate his ignorance (I don't think "ignorancy" is actually a word), because you don't want to be seen as a hypocrite.

By the by, there have been a number of studies indicating that, while not true in all cases, homosexuality has been linked to a history of abuse and molestation in childhood. Notice the qualifier.

So, Dragon Age. Cool game. I have not read the comics, how does Mr. Card treat the protagonist? Does he go the noble route or the "renegade" route? I prefer the noble route myself. Although I did get Moragan pregnant to save both myself and Alastair once. Seemed liked the best choice to set up the eventual sequal.

The one thing we don't tolerate is intolerance. Oh and Disagreeing with someone because they have a different opinion to our own is not intolerant. Would you prefer we just agree with everything someone says like good little sheep?

To Orson Scott Card:

How do you feel writing a comic about a game that endorses homosexuality even though you are out spoken against it?

To the publishers:

How do you feel losing subscribers because your writer is a bigot?

I'll repeat this. I would actually like an answer to both questions.

I have sent off all the questions to IDW to be passed along to all 3 participants. When we know where/when the answers will be given, we'll let you all know. Stay tuned. :)

Awesome!  Thanks Chris!

By the way, is there any chance we can see which questions you chose?   You know how it is, one man's off-topic question is another man's most important question.

I would argue that choosing not to give my hard earned money to someone who will use it to try to oppress me or those I love is a rational decision on my part.  Encouraging others to not help fund such activities is also entirely rational.  His personal views are no longer irrelevant when the proceeds of his work are used to fund activities designed to limit my ability to express my views.  For that reason, I won't purchase the comic and will encourage others to refrain as well; and I won't invest in further BW games if he becomes part of the writing team for those games.  He has endorsed such practices against companies who support gays and lesbians in the past, so he invited this sort of response to his work.  That is significantly different from simply holding views that I disagree with.

As for a question to both Card and the rest of the dev team, to what extent are Card's views on women and same-sex relationships going to color the game world and the way women and same-sex relationships will be handled in future DLC/expansions/games in the franchise? To date, women have largely been treated as equals and same-sex relationships have had roughly the same level of acceptance as would be found in the mainstream of most Western countries and have been present as opposed to being ignored completely.

Edit: Spelling

I cant decide if i should be upset or amused that you are getting Orson Scott Card to help write this universe. I just never thought of Bioware as being an agency that supports Bigotry. Mr Orson Scott Card is a homophobic bigot and regardless of whether or not his writing will reflect his beliefs i certainly wont be buying this comic, and if he is brought in to help write DA games, i wont be buying any of those either.

Its a shame really to tarnish such a wonderful reputation by associating with with such bad person.

I dont imagine that you will read this, or that you if you do, you will care about the loss of my single purchase of a comic book. I hope you do read, i hope that you where unaware of the mans social beliefs, because it would be a shame to think that a company like Bioware is supporting of Orson Scott Cards statements.

The question here is simple: does it matter? If Homer (and no, I'm not comparing Homer to Orson Scott Card in any way, I'm just trying to make a point), was a racist or a sexist or even a serial killer, would that lessen the worth of his work? Unless you disagree with what the book/comic/game/whatever is actually trying to promote, I believe the creator's views can be overlooked (but not ignored).

Take a politician who has cheated on his wife. Does that make him a bad politician or simply a bad husband?

Judging someone's work just because you find one's views or even actions offensive is, I think, as narrowminded and "bad" as you accuse that one to be.
