It is without a doubt the best expansion pack i have ever played... but compared to the original content it falls very far short of being a masterpiece.
Within the first 40 minutes i knew that the continuity from Origins wasn't going to be to a high enough standard to satisfy me. The meetings with characters from the previous game felt awkward... especially Alistair and Wynne, who i had built pretty solid friendships with. Everything felt detached from Origins.
So i decided to restart as the Orlaisian Warden. The sense of detachment didn't feel so weird then, and in fact was perhaps a positive, as i was a stranger in a strange land.
I did very much enjoy Awakening from that moment on, but still had a few issues.
The biggest was the new conversation system. I don't like it. Adding enviornmental triggers is a good thing, but it should be in addition to the regular system, not istead of. It kind of worked for Awakening, but for the next full game i will be very disappointed if the old method isn't resumed.
Runecrafting was tedius. I'm not sure how anyone could possibly think that it would be enjoyable.
And as has been said, the difficulty level was a little too low.
There were plenty of positives though. The Blackmarsh, Silverite Mine and ruined Dwarven city (i can't remember its name) were very enjoyable areas to explore. The Queen of Blackmarsh was one of my favourite parts.
Wade's fantastic items were also really cool. He was one of my favourite characters from Origins, i was pleased to see he had survived.
The two big decisions towards the end of the game were really well done, too. Though i think that the Architect should have been encountered a little earlier, just to allow more time for a build up. I didn't really know what going on for the first half of the game, so it lacked that epic feeling of the first.
All in all it was a very entertaining chapter when viewed as an addition to the original story, if not entirely on its own legs.
