How exactly are console gamers to blame about the difficulty?   Image IPB
I play on a console and enjoy soloing nightmare for a challenge, blaming people on consoles for Bioware's decision on the difficulty makes no sense at all. The expansion is easy as far as difficulty goes no matter what you play it on, blaming it on console players is just ignorant and quite insulting. Image IPB

I personally was not a fan of Oghren in origins, but I loved him in awakening and used him throughout the entire game.

This applies to me as well.

Dragon Age: Origins Awakening is definitely a classic. I am seriously looking forward to the next full Dragon Age title.

It is without a doubt the best expansion pack i have ever played... but compared to the original content it falls very far short of being a masterpiece.

Within the first 40 minutes i knew that the continuity from Origins wasn't going to be to a high enough standard to satisfy me. The meetings with characters from the previous game felt awkward... especially Alistair and Wynne, who i had built pretty solid friendships with. Everything felt detached from Origins.

So i decided to restart as the Orlaisian Warden. The sense of detachment didn't feel so weird then, and in fact was perhaps a positive, as i was a stranger in a strange land.

I did very much enjoy Awakening from that moment on, but still had a few issues.

The biggest was the new conversation system. I don't like it. Adding enviornmental triggers is a good thing, but it should be in addition to the regular system, not istead of. It kind of worked for Awakening, but for the next full game i will be very disappointed if the old method isn't resumed.

Runecrafting was tedius. I'm not sure how anyone could possibly think that it would be enjoyable.

And as has been said, the difficulty level was a little too low.

There were plenty of positives though. The Blackmarsh, Silverite Mine and ruined Dwarven city (i can't remember its name) were very enjoyable areas to explore. The Queen of Blackmarsh was one of my favourite parts.

Wade's fantastic items were also really cool. He was one of my favourite characters from Origins, i was pleased to see he had survived.

The two big decisions towards the end of the game were really well done, too. Though i think that the Architect should have been encountered a little earlier, just to allow more time for a build up. I didn't really know what going on for the first half of the game, so it lacked that epic feeling of the first.

All in all it was a very entertaining chapter when viewed as an addition to the original story, if not entirely on its own legs.

Been playing for six hours and enjoying myself so far.

The runecrafting can go into the me2 'planet scanning' category I think, but no complaints beside that.

Playing as the Orlesian warden and having a very good experience.

Difficulty set to Hard, pretty easy so far. I doubt any DA:O vet will have any problems.

New conversation system is growing on me...at least it's less time consuming.

Having Oghren as companion is an immediate 2 bonus points :) but I like the others characters as well. Very interesting so far with Howe and Anders.

I suspect I'm getting my money's worth, but the game isn't finished yet :)

+1. I have a few big criticisms:

-A few bugs are annoying, and it would've been nice for them to be fixed, but I've definitely bought PC games that were much more buggy at release. (Which is a sad, sad, commentary on the state of the PC gaming industry.)

-I would've liked one more decent-sized area that's not tied to character recruitment. You barely get to play with the last character you get (although that's what additional playthroughs are for, I suppose.)

-Difficulty was a little disappointing. I easily rolled almost every fight on my first try on Nightmare.

But I liked all the areas, the new abilities and specializations, the ruling Amarinthine sub-plot, and I really liked all the new companions.

from your very limited response I'm assuming you didn't even read everything I typed. lol. Most mainstream games which are for consoles(MW2, Halo 3, Gears) are all very easy only any difficulty b/c that is the way it works. Consoles games are more popular than PC games they sell more in most cases obviously setting the trend for what games will have to offer obviously the ppl to blame. It's not that hard to understand if you read everything, that is just an opinion but very close to a fact if you simply take a look around. I'm not saying it completey destroys the game. I'm only 11 hours into awakening & it gets more & more brilliant with each passing hour even though I've had to change to a 3 person party & store some good loot in a small hope of a challenge but it is still really easy so I'm back to running with a party of 4 so I can hear all my fun banter between companions.
Back to topic, your response is ignorant. Facts are most consoles games heavily out sell the PC versions & a large majority of games are prioritized towards consoles it comes to features & how they are developed so obviously what ever gaming trends there are we can mostly thank & blame consoles b/c that is what most devs focus on.  Sorry but your statement was just really ignorant considering all the facts around you & all the examples I gave so please just read the entire thing next time & then respond or maybe you just missed what I was getting at either way I still stand by consoles. Ppl are all very friendly on here & most PC gamer jump on consoles quite often but another fact remains when all PC & PC only ppl are together they tend to bash consoles since they do cause a lot of limitations & bad trends for gaming but they also bring a lot of good things to the table!! :)

Back on topic, I love this expansion more & more with each passing hour! If the ending is good or better this will be hands down the best expansion I have played in ten years or more. Only 3 big complaints are 1 way too easy but the game is so much fun i forget about this issue ...i have a feeling i'll remember how annoyingly easy it is after a couple play throughs & I'm less focused on dialogue 2 a few bugs like with the armor & weapons(i think) is the one special sword u get supposed to look identical to star fang...i think not! lol. I only have 1 set of armor so far but it is just god awful & i plan to burn it! point being the bugs are pretty bad but as someone else said not the worst but still sad. 3 I'm retarded & completely missing something or our quickbar is WAY TOO SMALL. I'm only 25% complete, i've only finished 2 main story quests, I'm 11 hours in & my quickbar/hotbar/actionbar is full on 3 of 4 party members. Even if I remove pots & skills like herbalism i'm still full so this needs to be fixed or there is something I am missing????? I feel cheated out of my spells & abilities.

so far this is a 9/10 but won't know for sure until I finish.

Agreed. This is the first RPG I've played in the last few years that expects you to be able to cram all your most frequently used abilities onto 1 hotbar. Even Bioware's previous RPG titles NWN 1+2 had the function of enabling more hotbars, with the press of a single key (on the PC).

I can only assume that the employee who implemented it is no longer working for them, and took his secrets with him....<_<

Seriously people this expansion is ownage. I have played through it twice with my Hero of Ferelden, choosing different paths. Honeslty i find the game to be extremely fun and a great add-on to the original. The bosses in the game are creative and quite horrifying =p. The difficulty of the game may not be very high but....your warden is a seasoned veteran. What do you expect? He obviously cannot be succumbed by puny forces of evil. The new skills put your Warden on a whole new level of godliness. The new companions are excellent and I find them to be much more fun to play with than the originals. except morrigan of course. although the new elven mage reminds me of morrigan for some reason, just on the opposite side of the evil spectrum hehehe.  All in all the awakening story is great, i thoroughly enjoyed it. The gameplay is fun, and the boss encounters are better than origins, in my opinion.

on another note: to people complaining about their DLC items not transferring...are you kidding me? Items from origins and the origins DLC are TRASH compared to the high powered killing machine loot you get in awakening. You wouldn't use your old gear for more than 10 minutes. Also you get very rich very quick in awakening so happy pimping out your character with godly items. =).

!!LONG LIVE DRAGON AGE!!

Im glad you like, I really am.
But for me the mere fact that only a few days after its release you have played through it twice, supports my feeling that the game expansion is too short to be worth 40 dollars.

I'm not sure why peopel pay so much attention to length. You have no idea how long Awakening is at all. You won't know until you play it. It is sad that gamers can't be thankful for 20+ hours for $40 plus lots of new facts about the darkspawn & tons of abilities. You will only get out what you put in, this is an EXPANSION NOT an entirely new game for the DA series. I expect about 20+ hours out of it but I think I'll end up with 25+ which is great that is more than 1/4 of the time I got out of Origins & it is longer than most full blown RPGs & even some open world sandbox RPGs. I think people are focusing on the engatives too much & just complaing & repeating negative little statements NOT facts just misguided opinions heavily influenced by all the people complaining like annoying little children on these forums. I see no one complaining about ME 1 or 2 when they finished them in 10-50 hours for $50-$60 but oh well it is all of the people like you who will most likely miss out on something great simply b/c you let others form your opinions & you can accept a little bit of change.

The problem isn't necassarlily length, it's more how it's divided..........

If there were several mini main campaign mission between the actual campaign missions

SPOILERs? (not really imo)

(small) one after the first

( Slightly longer) one after the second

(almost normal sized) one after the third, that would greatly improve as well as character interest and substantial story...

even if it is optional.....and you can only get some equipment... you can atleast get accustomed to the characters you obtain, especially right before the endgame there should be something

The biggest load of rubbish I have ever read. There are loads of console games so being able to list ones you find easy is no proof of anything. Faulty and unbelievably thick logic. Games have been getting easier over the years and that has nothing to do with system. Demons Soul's anyone? No PC children bash consoles because they are children and act childish.

Awakenings is a good hack and slash module. After I used the mod that carried over spells and abilities from Awakenings, and took over a few items (like vigilance sword and landsmeet shield), Awakenings lost some of its luster.

It was a decent expansion but it was overpriced in my opinion. It was also to buggy and parts seemed to rushed to be called a masterpiece. It lacked the immersion factor Origins had with the ability to have conversations with your team mates anytime you wanted. In Awakenings there is only a few times during the game where you could talk to your team mates. Also out of all the good choices of old team members to bring back for awakening they bring back Oghren the one I disliked the most. I would say more about things this expansion lacked but this topic is a no Spoiler area. On the upside though the story was good, and there is some updated graphics for the expansion in comparison to Origins.

When it comes right down to it Bioware outdid themselves with Origins and ME2, and they raised the bar dramatically to what people expect now, and want from their games, content, ect. I guess that's the price of success. That being said nice work Bioware, just in the future if you are going to release a $25 expansion don't price gouge us $39.99 for it. If you priced it at $20-$25 most people would not complain as much about the lack of some things, and even the bugs this expansion has.

Yup. I don't know what possesed the developers to leave out the quickbars from their previous games. It's not like they were in the dark over how many spells, talents and usables were going to be in the game...

I don't think it's one single reason why people are disappointed with this expansion, it's all the little things that take away from the experience. The price, the length, the difficulty, the lack of any bug fixes and the addition of new ones etc, all these add up to really take away from the experience. I did enjoy parts of it, but overall it had a very rushed feel to it and really didn't have the feel of expanding origins, more of a stand alone addon. The choices made in origins really felt like they had no effect, and the bugs with the endings in origins carry over to the expansion making some ending choices never even happen as far as the game is concerned, overall it just felt like a glorified dlc that cost twice what it should. It was fun, but the bugs and other issues really cheapened the experience.

The game was very good up until the final battle.

We really could have used 1 more main quest area that unlocked after getting all of the companions to help transition from the main game to the end game like we did with the Landsmeet in Origins.

Lastly, a real ending sequence would have been most welcome.

I enjoyed the game as well, and it took me about 18 hours to beat, however, I have to agree with that statement above.  Each main quest basically unlocks a companion, so no matter what you won't have all your party members fleshed out as much you want to, and may even miss some companion quests depending on the order you do things.

Masterpiece? No,
Is it a good game? That I believe is a yes.
