It's a ton better than the repetetive driving of the Mako for minerals and stuff. It's still boring mind you but I prefer it over what ME1 had us doing.

But you do not have to collect minerals from MAKO in ME1. And tbh it is 1000x better in ME1 where you just click on Scan planet that having to scan the surface yourself like an idiot. Makes me wonder, why the ship even has the crew when you have to do everything by yourself...

Casey hudson quote "We had lots of feed back on the orbital minigame, and a frequent comment is that it's "strangely addictive""

Dear Mr. Hudson:

I am glad to hear that there are some people who find this minigame addictive.  It must be validating for the folks on the Bioware/ME2 team who approved it.  Unfortunately, 50% of the populous has a below-average IQ and, even for those who are above-average, many have psychological conditions that would help them find comfort in mindless repetition.  The minigame really is rather mindless.  You sit there, stare at a spinning orb, and get cramps in your fingers while holding the analog stick and trigger in the same position for five minutes per planet.  By no means do I claim to be Einstein, but I do have a few active neurons as I would hope does your target audience (even the twitch-happy FPS crowd that ME2 was "optimized" for).  Accordingly, while I'm sure it must be some great stuff, I must encourage you to stop smoking/huffing/snorting/injecting whatever substance it is that makes you or others think the orbital minigame was "addictive" in any way that could possibly be construed as fun or enjoyable.

Thank you.  Image IPB

I think most of us would say that at first mineral scanning was an improvement over what was available in ME1. Yet that within the first few planets scanned we realised that it was tedious. Then we realised it was mandatory tediousness if we wanted upgrades. That is why most of us do not agree that scanning is 'strangely addictive' despite what the Project Director seems to think we have said. I would go further and say that PC users pretty well use the editor to change minerals on hand and 360 users would do so if they could. That fact alone should convey to Casey that mineral scanning is NOT what he imagines it to be.

The planet scanning would be ok as long as they made it quicker. It took me on average about 5 minutes per planet and when you have a system with 3 rich planets, well , you do the math. I do like the MAKO and are looking forward to the Hammerhead.

Better yet, get that pretty Yeoman who dances up a storm to do the scanning.

In ME1 you clicked on a planet and then on the big Survey button. It took you about 5 seconds to scan a planet. You DID NOT have to mine minerals in MAKO. So no, it was 1000x better and more logical in ME1.

Well I pointed out (in bold red letters) that collecting minerals in ME1 was completely unnecessary and had NO effect on the outcome. What followed was spurious arguments about how you "don't have to collect minerals in ME2 either!"... except not having the upgrades will cause crew-mates to die and your equipment/abilities to be substandard (hint, you don't get bonus minerals in ME2 unless you mined in ME1 and completed the survey. So ME2 retroactively made ME1 minerals needed. THAT'S how lousy the mineral system is in ME2, it actually degrades the FIRST game it's so bad!)

The REAL point isn't ABOUT MINERALS AT ALL. It's about tedious mini-games that ARE NOT fun. In ME1 you could use that glut of omni-gel to just BYPASS ALL THE MINIGAMES! Don't like electronics or decrypting? Omni-gel it! Don't like hunting minerals? Don't bother! Guess what you couldn't bypass in ME2... the mini-games! And now they're 10 times more tedious!

The hacking and decryption mini-games I really don't mind, and it's always pretty satisfying to nail a decrypt in under 15 seconds (SUCESS!).

Planet scanning's just pretty tedious. Either shorten the process or increase the gains.

Well i'm playing ME 1 at the moment, and i have to say that i completed the UNC mineral collection mission with extra supplies mostly by surveying from orbit planets and asteroids and the few i found during my path to an objective, i didn't have to actually look for them!

I dislike the scanning.. it's slow, tedious... interrupts the fun of the game. First thing I did was edit some files to allow me to give myself as many resources as I want without having to spend hours scanning.

It's just not fun and I've beaten ME2 5 or 6 times now... I'd hate the game if I had to scan for minerals each playthrough.

I'd like to see a new / different system used for upgrades in ME3. I dunno about console players, but on PC using a mouse to move the scanner around to get minerals causes some severe hand cramping after a few minutes (even with the scanner upgrade.. it's still harsh).

Holding the analog stick in place for minutes at a time is also pretty uncomfortable. It's just an all-around bad idea.

Mineral scanning was the worst thing about the game, player reaction to finding a planet with rich resources should be ''Great! found a rich planet'' not '' for the love of god not another rich one'' would of much prefered they kept mineral finding the same as the first game with an improved mako and planet layout, a faster scanner with less nodes to find but higher resource gain from each or a cross between the two.

Thats a joke..isn't it?

Mineral scanning was the most pathetic and boring part of the game...sure it was okay the first time. But the novelty sure wore of fast.

I'm gonna throw up, if I see the scanner again, FFS...

When the Hammerhead was out, I did a test to myself. Instead of looking straight for the anomaly, I looked for the minerals. There's something strange about it now. The way I have to keep track of the four possible spikes in the graphi is now directly wired to puke in my brain. And I really felt it coming in my throat (and was really surprised).

If I replayed ME1... 5 times before it came to this (Mako was the previous reason to puke, but just because it was tolerably slow and the landscape was also barely tolerably boring; cool skyboxes, though), but ME2 has done it in just 2.

Pissing in my ear and tells me it's raining.

No the frequent comment is that it sucks.   I wish he would just admit that people make those comments and maybe admit that there is some validity  to them.   We have been extremely detailed in our criticism of it and honestly the 360 version is awful even with all the tricks they recommend.  I can't even count the number of times I have fallen asleep while planet scanning.    Like Wrex says  "Don't ****** in my ear and tell me it's raining"

What?

Does he really read the forums?
All around the world there are people complaining about the boring of the planet scanning, poeple who first hated the Mako, after seeing that minigame, now miss the mako...

Hope it doesn't mean the return of Planet Scanning in ME3.

Casey Hudson, don't make a mistake!

Drop the planet scanning and re add the planetary Exploration on vehicle and add the 3d free roam drivable Normandy instead of the isometric galaxy Map (take "Freelancer" game for example), don't waste resources and time on the ugly scanning thing.

well it really is only mandatory the FIRST time you play through with an imported character. After that you get 52,500 of each mineral to start the game and really do not need to scan much if at all...

This. Lazy way out but its logical. You're a commander not a miner.

Planet scanning is only a problem if you want to deplete every planet... After I depleted 20 planets or so I didn't shot a single probe again, not to mention I completely ignored planets with Moderate and Poor.

I was exploring for the heck of it, reading descriptions and looking for the scarce side quest.

So many planets with hyper oxygenation of their atmosphere... just makes you think how many New Reapers have been made, millions are needed for a single ship, but an space faring species is likely to be in the billions/trillions (some reapers will look alike and others will be very different)

Casey Hudson is a d-bag.  Here's another one of his quotes:

CaseyH-ME2: To Guest-183 [/b]There were no female / female romances in ME1, same with ME2. Most people count Tali, but her species is female-looking but asexual.

Did this guy even play the game?  He can't remember if you romance Liara or Tali???

Well to be fair that chat did have alot of typos and mistakes from Casey. You would make mikstakes too if you had to answer so many questions.

I can accept the mistake confusing Quarians/Asari, but the comment about no female/female romance in ME1 was disingenuous at best.

Planetary exploration in the Mako > Planet Scanning.

Personally I think the whole idea of using minerals to upgrade your weapons is where the problem starts....
