I literally fell asleep once planet scanning as well .... it's just that fun.... if that's not the best rebuke of those remarks I don't know what is quite frankly.

Lol, so i'm not the only one that happened to then.  Image IPB

This reminded me of the times I fell asleep listening to the Codex narrator. Anyone else find that guys voice oddly soothing? Image IPB

Can we have more of the context around this comment? Are we sure he wasn't being sarcastic?

Casey hudson quote "We had lots of feed back on the orbital minigame, and a frequent comment is that it's "strangely addictive""

No the frequent comment is that it sucks.   I wish he would just admit that people make those comments and maybe admit that there is some validity  to them.   We have been extremely detailed in our criticism of it and honestly the 360 version is awful even with all the tricks they recommend.  I can't even count the number of times I have fallen asleep while planet scanning.    Like Wrex says  "Don't ****** in my ear and tell me it's raining"

I agree, planet scanning is the most idiotic feature in this game. They should remove asap. I don't remember many people saying its "strangely addictive" either. So yeah it sucks, hard.

I found it addictive. Takes me back to my teenage years wasted playing WoW....

I found it to be much more bearable than the mako. I'm sure in part because the way the achievements were set up I didn't have to do it nearly as much on subsequent play-throughs. I did find it strangely addictive at times, albeit more along the lines of the way I lose myself in mindless tedium playing MMOs. Whereas the mako was and is an ordeal for me playing the first game.

But it's sort of like comparing a punch to the left side of my face to a punch to the right side; at the end of the day, I'd be happier without either one.

Anyone got a link to this interview? Would be of great help so we can see what was said.

Trekking generic plots of randomly generated terrain was particularly mind-numbing, and definitely was a bigger time sink than scanning.

I think it was such a great idea I am considering buying the PC version just so I can use an editor and skip it entirely.

One thing the scanning really killed for me was reading abotu the planets in their descriptions. In ME1, I enjoyed reading about the "character quirks" of each planet, how this planet had a huge canyon from being glanced by a mass effect cannon, or how a great Turian general landed on this planet never to bee seen again, etc.

I hate the scanning so much I could give a crap less what happened on any planet in ME2. I just want them all to be "Death Starred" so I can scoop up the mineral bits floating in space.

All the mini games were just filler. Probably added 3 or 4 pointless hours onto the completion time. Seriously, can anyone think of a good mini game?

Oblivion conversation game...sucked

Oblivion lock picking game...sucked big time

Witcher gambling and boxing games...sucked rotten eggs

Mass effect 1 unlocking Mini game....meh

Mass effect 2 every damn ten minutes I have to unlock something game...frequently sucked rotten eggs.

Casey, read the reviews, read the feedback. Humble yourself, and do everyone a favor and can the planet scanning.

Fallout 3, especially the hacking game. Requires to actually ... gasp! ... use your brain. Of course that wouldn't fit into the apparent design philosophy for ME 2.

What? What? Honestly that minigame is silly. Use your brain? You make 3 guesses based on vague assumptions then you shut the terminal off and try again - no consequences.

Casey Hudson:  We've been getting a great response to the scanning minigame.  In fact, our market research shows that just by including it, we've actually double our sales!  You can definitely expect more great innovations like it in the future.

I'll raise my hand and say I like the hacking mini-games. They are better than the ME 1 unlocking mini-game at any rate. But scanning? Holy crap! If Peter Griffin, Homer Simpson, Gomer Pyle and George W. Bush all somehow together had a kid who was raised in a barrel until the age of 26, he'd still find the damm scanning tedious and dull.

My main gripe with planet scanning is that it took the beautifully rendered planets of ME:1 and turned them into hideous cookie-cutter models.

You seem to be confused.
Let me fix that for you

Just so you know, planets are spherical, so they aren't really "cookie-cutter" models.

HAhahahahahah, oh man

Yeah, planet scanning is the whole reason ME2 is successful at all. ;)

At least the Mako made the galaxy seem bigger, piece of junk that it was. Planet scanning is as much a game as plywood is a food.

Hey, cookie cutters do come in different shapes. Though I don't see what good a spherical shaped cookie cutter would do when you can just roll it into a ball...

Yes, because Casey Hudson saying something related to development of the game means EA is creating all future BW titles.

Hehehehe.....he's full of crap. There was no comment about the scanning being addictive let alone frequent. The scanning minigame is pure, undiluted bull****. That's why I don't do it and I simply mod my 360's saves for tons of minerals.

Maybe its been done, but someone should start a new thread on 'activities more tedious than planet scanning.'

Never mind. That would be a short thread.

Nonsense. You can certainly approach the mini game that way - but if you do "waste" a few seconds thinking, it's all logical and not "vague assumptions". Besides, in my game the terminals are locked after you fail once (except when you have selected a special perk). Not to mention the fact that you can't access some terminals at all if your skill isn't high enough, and that your chances of success depend on the skill too. That's called role playing.

Well I'll be honest but in terms of role playability Bethesda's game have always been a success to that.
