Honestly I wouldn't say I hate it just that I strongly dislike it.  I consider it to be about as fun watching grass grow, staring at a wall, waiting at an extremely long stop light, or sitting in traffic.

Or watching golf.

Seriously, can anyone think of a good mini game?

The Galaga-esque minigame in Jade Empire and the snowboarding game in FF7.

Racing in KOTOR was great.

Somehow I dont think Casey is visiting the sites that have reviews done by people who have actually played the game more than once when it first became available to them. The ones I see dont call the scanning mini-game fun. Here is an article that says why playing the game and perhaps more than just once is a good thing. And the same site has a positive review of Mass Effect 2 but KNOCKS the scanning as being tedious!!!

Perhaps Casey should be reading those reviews and not the rosy ones done by people who had no time to fit it in before the release date back in January but had to do it anyways.

It's marketing. He was just unwilling to admit that something in the game sucked for mass market consumption. I'm sure he realizes that the "mini game" is ass.

Hopefully it's this.
I do understand why he wouldn't admit that scanning sucks, ME 2 was released only two moths ago and it will probably sell a lot more copies before ME 3 is released. So he isn't going to say that 5-10% of the games playing time is boring and tedious ****.

you guys need to learn corporate-speak.

if hudson admits scanning sucks, the first problem is that the curtain of infallible design is torn down and that there exists the possibility of other poorly thought out mechanisms in the game. worse, the consumers can now rightly hold BW responsible and demand they correct these mistakes or face future purchase ramifications.

at some point i'm sure hudson had good ideas and enough technical knowledge to get his bosses' attention, but at this point he's just a politician. if he says it's not raining, grab an umbrella.

Casey hudson quote "We had lots of feed back on the orbital minigame, and a frequent comment is that it's "strangely addictive""

No the frequent comment is that it sucks.   I wish he would just admit that people make those comments and maybe admit that there is some validity  to them.   We have been extremely detailed in our criticism of it and honestly the 360 version is awful even with all the tricks they recommend.  I can't even count the number of times I have fallen asleep while planet scanning.    Like Wrex says  "Don't ****** in my ear and tell me it's raining"

Actually it really wasn't that bad. It can be improved... a lot..., but it was fine.

Also Lockpicking in Oblivion and Splinter Cell.

It was something new.

Whoever said that planet scanning was "strangely addictive" was probably doing coke from the boredom. That would explain quite a bit. :P

Yea, cocaine isn't going to do it. I say they'd have been dropping acid. Tripping while scanning could be "strangely addictive" :P

Well, I know I don't find planet scanning "addictive", though it wasn't bad either... however, my younger brother does seem addicted to it. He usually cracks jokes about how his Shepard should become "Prospector Shepard" before he sinks hours into planet scanning...

By comparison to the Mako roaming all over the map, watching the radar, the ME2 prospecting is a lot LESS TEDIOUS.

Another factor for a review should be PLAYING THE FIRST GAME.

Is it  necessary to have anything so tedius in the game?

Nah none of the Bioware people will admit they screwed up. They think that they made the most awesome game EVAR and will always deny any comments, no matter how valid, about what they screwed up even exist.

Exploring with the Mako is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL! If you have a ground quest, it'll be on the map. Not getting mineral or tags or scrap will have no dramatic outcome. NOT mining in ME2 will get half your team killed off the bat when you don't have upgrades.

I REPEAT, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET MINERALS IN ME1. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET MINERALS IN ME1. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET MINERALS IN ME1. GETTING MINERALS IN ME1 IS NOT MANDATORY. GETTING MINERALS IN MASS EFFECT 2 IS MANDATORY!

Christina Norman admitted that "nobody liked planet scanning" in her presentation a few weeks ago.

Maybe Hudson has strange tastes. After all, he did say that Jack is possibly one of the greatest characters conceived by Bioware, and that "all the fans will find themselves attached to her". But we all know how her popularity has turned out thus far. (no offense Jack fans)

Mineral deposits in ME1 were a way of making easy money. And the minerals weren't mandatory in ME2 either. You can beat the game without full upgrades.

So, stop repeating nonsense.

Wrong. Not upgrading the Normandy gets 3 people on your team killed. Also, you can get those 3 upgrades with import or achievement bonuses AND the refined minerals lying around in each mission. Therefore, you can get the No One Left Behind achievement and complete the missions 100% without ever having to mine for a single mineral (probes are still necessary for anomalies).

Driving the Mako is required in Therum, Feros, Noveria, Virmire and end mission (the five main missions). The Mako itself is NOT optional.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET MINERALS IN EITHER GAME.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO GET MINERALS IN EITHER GAME.

The only comparision Bioware has made about the Mako and Planet Scanning is the collecting resources/mineral one.
Collecting resources via the Mako is entirely optional.
There is no vehicle based story missions in ME2 in the first place.

It never ends.

And as with all subjects pertaining to a possible flaw in ME2 on these forums, ME1 must always be brought up as being worse.

Only if you want everyone to live, which is not necessary to beat the game.
