I've notice when you play ME2 that if you're starting a new game instead of importing, the game picks the Virmire survivor based on gender, Ashley if Shepard is male Kaiden if Shepard is female.

Why?

A default Shepard will not have romanced a squad member. What's the logic?

Perhaps so they can be a romance option in ME3?

You can actually mess with that if you want. I did a no romance ME1 run a week ago, started the romance path with Ash, killed her off at Virmire, told Liara "Nope, not interested" and when I imported to ME2, the game went with Kaiden in the cut-scenes and on Horizon (no picture in the cabin).

On a new game it always defaults to the opposite sex, and claims the other died at virmire.

I suppose romance is an option, but it seems out of place to me.

You make a good point but that game is still an Import Shepard, so it's not the same.

I'll say now in a playthrough of ME1, I'll always save Kaidan unless I'm romancing Ashley, but that's my own reasons. And I'll say that I didn't like how if you were in a romance with the person you saved because then the decision became about the romance even if it wasn't.

But still, it feels like something you missed the boat on, although that might just be because I played ME1 so many times.

Personally I always save Ashley. Women and children first, even annoying racist ones; I don't care if that makes me sexist. I suspect Kaiden would have said the same thing.

In my reasoning, they're both military so gender goes out the window there.

Ashley is a soldier, a very good one, but as cold as it sounds, so are a lot of people. Her abilities are easily replaced in the grand scheme of things.
Kaidan is a functional L2 biotic with minimal side affects. He's probably one of the most powerful biotics in the Alliance military, not even counting his tech abilities. The cost that's gone into his training and equipment is easily 10 times what went into Ashley's. It's much harder to come up with another person who can do what he can do. To me that makes him the more valuable resource.

I know that in game, for most playthroughs Ashley tends to be the most valuable squadmate, but looking beyond game mechanics and into universe setting is how I came to my decision. I understand a lot of people will disagree. That's fine. This is just my reasoning.

To me, I always choice Kaidan, since he was the higher ranking officer. Plus, in the game universe I think he is the more valuable resource. I tend to agree, with HakkyounoTenshi.

I really liked Kaidan as a friend, but I really liked the Ashley romance so I always have to sacrifice Kaidan on Virmire. I feel like sh*t about it, but Kaidan was a good soldier that gave his life without question to save the crew. He's a hero.

Usually on ME1 I romance Ashley, so she gets saved. Otherwise saving Kaidan makes more sense, as he's an officer and Williams isn't.

I admit I don't really know how things work in the actual military but I would have thought that an officer (who serves as Shepard's no. 2 effectively) would end up taking priority.
