Hey guys i have some decisions i will be making in the near future on my soldier playthrough and id like your opinions. Any helpful input on these would be greatly appreciated

1.Heightened or Hardened Adrenaline Rush? Im going to be taking the REV on the collector ship and that will be my main weapon so wouldnt the added time dilation with heightened decrease the number of shots i would be able to get off with the REV, thus decreasing my dps asp apopose to hardened? So would hardened be better for the REV?

2. Viper or Mantis? Since im going to be taking the REV, thw widow is out of the question,(please dont try and persuade me widow fans, i have an infiltrator for my widow Posted Image)  which would be optimal?(yes i know i just used a very contreversial word) I know the viper is good at stripping defenses but i prefer the one shot kill feel when i pull out my sniper. Can the mantis one shot most enemies at the higher levels? Which do you think would be better?

3.Final Question. Squad or Heavy Disruptor Ammo? The 60% extra shield damage you get eith heavy is obviously quite a bit better thn the 40% with squad, but would it be best if you squadmates could also be stripping shields more easily as appose to just Shep doing so?

Heres what my build will be if anyones curious:

-ADR- 4
-Disruptor Ammo- 4
-Squad Incen: Just so my squad can be setting enemies on fire and exposing them while i use my prefered ammo type
-Commando: Just for the extra weapon damage
-Heavy Warp ammo: I used to have AP ammo but i just got to Horizon and post Horizon there is rarely any armored enemies. Youre mostly fighting mercs with barriers and shields, armor rarely shows its face post-horizon. If anyone can make a case for AP ammo id gladly listen. Im just trying to achieve the optimal dps here.

Thanks all

1. I prefer Hardened AR, especially on Insanity, because of the survivabiliy it gives you when running and gunning. His is especially true since you're taking the Revenant. If you were taking the Widow then Heightened AR might be better.

2. Personal choice here but personally I can't stand the Mantis. The Viper did the job for me more than well enough.

3. Squad Disruptor would be best I think because it would mean that you never have to take Zaeed on geth missions anymore, thereby freeing up a squad space for someone else.

Thanks. I did forget to mention I only play on insanity. Anyone else have some advice on this?

I agree that Hardened seems better for automatic weapons, like Revenant, Heightened seems better for slow weapons like Claymore and Widow.

I prefer Viper over Mantis .. not even close really.

Personally I usually take Inferno Ammo and Squad Cryo, which is better than Disruptor against geth anyways imho.

-The Mantis should be fine for one-shotting unprotected enemies the whole game; not sure about shield/barrier enemies on higher levels. I agree with Stoik about Hardened vs. Heightened AR. (EDIT: just saw your post about playing on Insanity; so my point about unprotected enemies is irrelevant. I'd probably take the Viper, personally.)

-Squad or Heavy Disruptor Ammo probably depends on whether you rely on your squaddies more for shooting or for power use. Kind of a tough call. Do you have the Long Service resource bonus? Because if so, it's easy to re-spec multiple times during the game to change from Squad to Heavy as you need it.

-Heavy Warp Ammo is a good all-around choice, but Tungsten Ammo is good if you want to prioritize taking down YMIR mechs and Scions as fast as possible (which I do, usually).

The Mantis and Incisor aren't really in the same league as the Viper and Widow IMO.

@bill hooks: yes I do have the bonus so I can and do respec often.

It looks like I'm going to be going with heavy disruptor ammo, the viper, and hardened ar. Thanks for the input guys

My Build I Went Through Insanity With:

Hardened Adrenaline Rush (Amazingly Powerful! SPAM SPAM SPAM!)

Concussive Shot (1 Point Rarely Used)

Squad Disruptor Ammo (BlueSuns,Eclipse,Geth)

Squad Incendiary Ammo (Vorcha,Krogan,Klixen,Scion)

Shock Trooper (Personal Preference Really....)

Squad Warp Ammo (Harbinger,Praetorian,Vanguards)

I Cannot Stress How Amazing Squad Warp Ammo Is On Insanity!

Take The Mantis You Can't Spend Time Shooting Someone In The Head Multiple Times Or You'll Die, I Took The Revenant Machine Gun I Loved It Towards The End With Warp Ammo It Annihilated Harbingers And Scions With Warp Ammo At Close Range!

I Also Believe That Squad Ammo Is Preferable For Shepard It Allows You To Boost Your Teams Damage Output Allowing For More Damage Over Time Which You'll Have When You Play On Harder Difficulties With Better Tactics

1) If you're making a build to maximize the Revenant take Hardened and go with Shock Trooper over Commando. Those choices will maximize both the amount of damage you can take and maximize the amount of time your Adrenaline Rush will last. Commando and Heightened is best used with a soldier who specializes in using the Widow and the Vindicator (my preferred build) since both of those weapons are extremely accurate; but suck ammo.

2) Viper, if you're not taking the Widow. It can do almost as much DPS as the Widow; but it leaves you exposed longer so your more likely to lose your shields. I saw a video where the Widow took down a YMIR mech's armor on insanity in 6.1 seconds while the Viper took about 6.9 (although the guy using the Viper also lost his shields while the guy using the Widow wasn't scratched) and the Mantis took nearly ten seconds. Furthermore if you took hardened adrenaline rush and shock trooper you can suck up more damage so being exposed while you're firing the viper isn't as big an issue.

3) Squad disruptor. You'd be surprised how effective your squad can be, plus they can do damage while you're pinned down. Personally I use squad disruptor, squad incendiary, and heavy warp ammo as my bonus power. That gives me a squad ammo that's beneficial in any situation (incendiary will still do bonus damage and panic enemies using barriers like Collectors) and a really powerful ammo against armor and barriers for me.

I think the mantis is generally preferable against Mercs, but it usually can't effectively one-shot collector-type enemies (on Insanity, anyway). In those cases I go with the Viper.

If your using the glitch. Max em all out :P

Aside from that

I maxed out hardened. That 50% extra protection from dmg is an angel.

Concussion shot I only put 1 in it, for pushing husks down or the like.

Both ammo was squad based. 3 people firing lv 3 ammo is better than only me shooting lv 4 ammo.

Mantis is good against armor. ANd on insanity most have barriers. So if all of you 3 have snipers have 2 with mantis 1 viper.

YOur specialty. Depending on your special power.

But when it comes down to math. If you got good armor set. and Shock trooper. The dmg you do with reave and duration of dominate is increased better. Than just having commando.

Commando and Shock trooper are a close call, it all depends on your armor and special power. If your power is biotic, is better if you go with shoulders that give you +5% pwr dmg, and go with shock trooper, to have more pwr dmg than just commando, but with shock trooper you'll have a longer duration and slightly higher dmg.

But if your using warp ammo......duno is kind a of a waste given you have the ability to turn inferno into squad inferno. Is much better to have reave instead of warp ammo, allowing you to have squad inferno.

2 reaves, and warp own.

Or 1 reave, 1 warp, most of the barrier, and heavy inferno grenade, incinirate, or a 2nd reave own armor. Even on insanity.

Mantis is a good rifle, just low ammo count (which I hate) Vipers is awesome, high ammo count and with adrenaline rush on you can get in 3 solid headshots on a target before adrenaline rush wears off. Even on insanity 3 headshots is more than enough to take down standard enemie, expecially if you're using the right kind of ammo power for the job.
As for heightened or hardened, try them both. I just bull rushed insanity with heightened and my rev, gonna hit a ng+ and respec to hardened to see which I like better.

Edit:  As for AP ammo, there's no reason to switch that out (unless wanting to try a different bonus power) it still increases damage done to armor and health, not just armor.

im not to familiar with soliders so i dont know what AR is better but i can tell you i much prefer the mantis over the viper. if you want a sniper rifle, without taking the widow, the mantis is the way to go. i played a soldier for the insanity acheivment, and i was getting tons of one shot kills with the mantis, i didnt even realize it was that powerful. the sniper on the soldier should be a niche weapons meaning you dont need 100 thermal clips to use it effectively. the viper is more like a hunting rifle with a scope. it has alot of ammo becasue it needs alot of ammo. i dont think the devs woule give a weapon 60 rounds if it didnt need 60 rounds.

i think the hand canon is actually better then the viper.

I would go with hardened. The extra heath is key to survival at times, and the extra time dialation doesn't mean much.

Hardened Adrenaline Rush works wonders in game, Heightened is good as well, but I prefer Hardened.

Now when it comes to sniper rifles, Viper all the way. Pop Hardened AR, and let the lead fly. It can take down any target extremely fast, combine it with one of the various ammo types and it destroys 'em even faster. God, I love that gun.

I like heightened AR with the viper and vindicator combo. The viper is more ammo efficient than the widow when killing enemies (The widow is just overkill in most situations). Personally, I only take the reverent out when I know I'm going to be swarmed on certain missions like some geth or husk missions.

If you're using the Revenant, go with the Viper and Hardened. Both weapons specialize in firing multiple shots very quickly, and Hardened is better for both weapons.
