so i've gotten to The Mother after deciding to slay the architect, and i was annihilated in the first few seconds

my party consists of PC tank in Sentinel armor,  ohgren 2h, sigrun DW, and Anders as control and heals

the tentacles (4 of them) just sprouted around my group who didnt have time to move and nearly killed everyone. which in the end did when the anti magic glyph appeared under my mage and drained him of mana rofl

so does anyone have any suggestions? should i change my party to be a little more ranged to not get swiped by the tentacles

This is how I killed her :

She wiped the floor with me 3 times in a row, until I decided to position my party at the start of the room (the entrance). The extra room allowed me to spread my party a bit and I stayed there until I finished off all 4 of the tentacles, then moved towards the middle of the room with my party.

I then disabled all tactics of my tank and just let him use aura of insolence (along with shieldwall) to draw all the children to him. I kept one damage dealer on the mother and quickly moved him away from her as she tried to grab him (you see "grab" appear above her head 3-4 seconds before she actually does it). The rest of my party I kept on managing the children.

My tank had massacre though, so after I used that, I quickly let my other damage dealer go on the mother to add some damage. Also, the repulsive aura of my mage did wonders after I killed the tentacles.

This was on insanity with a tank, 2-handed warrior, archer and mage. The archer was handy, but you should be able to do just fine (if not better due to possible better aoe damage for the children) with an extra melee person there instead of an archer.

Hope this helped.

helped quite a bit. i was able to back away and clear 3 of the tentacles along with the children. (thank god for force field and paralyze)

i had sigrun just shoot with arrows since i could only have two meele on her at a time

just kept the last tentacle paralyzed or caught in a force field since i throught maybe they would respawn if i killed all four :P

I beat her using a AW/BM/BM. All of my companions died after a time, and she gave me some trouble because she sapped all my mana which nullified my sustainables, but after getting them back on I cast elemental mastery as well as the last ability for the battle mage(forgot what it was called), I cast storm of the century with blood magic on I just watched her die with the occasional cone of cold, and blood wound on the tentacles. I was playing on nightmare, but I guess my characters build pretty much made it easy mode. I'm gonna try to beat her with my two-hander next.

I beat her by repeatedly using blood wound on her minions, and after they were all dead, the fight was a "tank and spank" Luckily for me, blood wound does not require mana.

I soloed her in about 20sec on nightmare.
Rogue-archery: stealth -> mark of death -> strenght of stone (knoskback, physical, spell imunity) -> profit.
No cheats, no exploits, no pots.

Stormchaser is much better armor if you want to Tank something.

Anyways, I used my Rogue, Oghren (in Hirol's Defense), Sigrun, and Velanna and had no trouble on her at all.

Just have Oghren and Sigrun clean up the Childer that come from the rear, and if you have a mage with Battlemage that also works well when surrounded for freezing.

I had main character DW warrior, Justice as tank, Nathaniel and Velanna. Justice and Nathaniel died while I cleared out all the grubs and tentacles, then I just had my main beat on the Mother while Velanna healed and used cone of cold to nullify grab attacks.

I used the Tevinter inferno tower, a couple of AOE spells from Velanna and Accuracy. My melee characters didn't go near her and spent the battle keeping the Children/tentacles off my archer. I learned the hard way in the original game not to get up close and personal with a Broodmother - staying at range was the key for me.

The first time I did this fight I tried to fight like how I did against DA:O's Broodmother: ignore the tentacles, slay the beast. Big mistake. The Mother's tentacles, as others have indicated, don't respawn. Every time a batch of Children appeared I would drop a Mass Paralyze on them and they'd be pretty much finished off by the time it wore off.

It didn't hurt that I had never used any of my lyrium potions or health poultices before this fight, though. >.>

I first concentrated on the tentacles, and then had my main concentrate on her while my party wiped up the children. I've done it with two parties. The first was my main - DW/Archer Spirit Warrior, Justice as S&S tank Champion/Guardian/Spirit Warrior, Sigrun as Legionaire Scout/Assassin/Duelist and Velanna as Keeper/Spirit Healer/Battlemage. The second I had Nathaniel, Velanna and Anders, since I sided with the Architect and Sigrun and Justice bit the bullet (or Vigilance/Heartwood Bow in this case). The second was harder as Nate and Anders were rather underequiped and I wasn't used to them by this point.

I used a mod to import the Warden's Keep equipment, so I had Starfang as well as Vigilance on my main. This was mainly for nostalgic reasons, as I think there are better weapons in Awakening, and I don't think it affected much.

Yeah she's pretty much toast with ranged attacks. Personally I thought killer her was easier than killing Brood Mother in the Deep Roads.

Ok here is another reason this expansion is lame. (game difficulty set on hard)
I went in with my party to fight mom. She killed everyone but me in like 30 seconds. At which point I ran to the entrance of the area drew my bow and killed the tentacles from range. Then went to work on mom. When grubs spawned I switched to blades and killed them and then back to work on tentacles with bow. Then back to work on mom. Then kill grubs again, rinse and repeat. The fight took like 20 minutes but I won and only used about 12 healing potions and a few bombs from the crazy dwarf.

Too easy, an old everquest tactic but it worked.

Brood mother in Deep roads was harder as she had real Dark Spawn come to help her, not those week little grubs.

My party seem very reluctant to heal themselves despite what their tactics say. I'm about to start attempt number three . . . too bad my Anders has awful spells and i forgot to buy one of those respec books. I suck at DA when it comes to mages. Any way, back to the fight . . .

Basic no frills/ any group strategy is to hang back and have the two party members range attack the mother, while the two toughest melee-ers protect them and kill all the spawns.

It can be a bit tougher early on the battle when youre getting harassed by children *and* tentacles, in which case pull another team member off range duty until the tentacles are dead and you can keep up with the spawn rate.

The mother herself doesnt seem to be much of a threat unless you do something silly like close to melee with her.

I died once on Nightmare difficulty doing this against her ( the only time my Main died the whole game), and that was more to do with me frying my entire party with the Architect's inferno ability ( kind of twitchy targeting on that).

Yes!! Got her at last. My tip: take direct control of your mage! Playing as Anders (xbox btw) i found it way easier to heal and manage my team. And follow the previous advice of dealing with the tentacles first, then the rest of them.

I still find Mage spells OP. I used Anders (who had all the Mage 'Stance' spells, Keeper spells, Battlemage spells, etc.). Once all the trash started going nuts on the screen, I just had Anders use pretty much everything he has, popping mana potions as needed. He has something like 800mana from OP items, so it was doable.

While controlling Anders, I just let my party run off tactics, pausing to heal hp/stamina.

Seriously though...That buff that enhances elemental dmg, the tempest stance that does all elemental dmg around the caster, battlemage drain aura, repulsion, enemy magic nullify, and the keeper roots + dmg spells = insane OP.

I fought my way to the end with Storm of the Century and gave her the same medicine without much success though so switch everybody to range weapon and went abit lame till she sent more children to deal and back to range till she was low enough to finish her off in melee.

Had a Rogue DW, Sigrun, Oghren and Anders without the Artichect since I go with a policy never to leave some darkspawn alive !

For the tentacles = Tank massacre, oghren massacre, and keeper aoe madness.

For mother i used = Tank and nathe, my tank gear is storm gauntlets, storm boots, helm from kal hirol and venture. high armor high def, really effective!

mother adds = oghren

Velanna supporting all.

I killed the mother on Nightmare difficulty, on my first try, didn't use any of the special abilities, and only used two greater health poultices.

PC rogue, 1h sword (vigilance) and shield, Nathaniel 1h sword and shield, Velanna as Arcane Warrior/Keeper/Battle Mage, and Anders as heals (AW/SH/BM).

Had Velanna (equipped in massive armor with over 100 constitution after runes) go in the middle of the room and start using her keeper and BM aoe modes/abilities, kept anders casting rejuvenate to keep the aoe's down (completely ignored the mother). When there were enough enemies clustered around Velanna, I had my rogues (Nathan and PC) use flicker, which just about killed them all. Had the rogues mop up the ones that were still alive (both were equipped in volcanic splintmail and shield, + legionnaire scout so survivability wasn't an issue). Once they were all dead, just focus fired the mother. A couple times she grabbed characters and started hitting them, she almost killed the PC but constant heal/regen/lifeward/group heal kept him alive (would've just revived him if he died anyway), and pretty quickly the mother was mincemeat.

The trick is that you don't really need a tank, your damage dealers (rogues) can survive just fine if they've got medium armor/legionnaire scout, and if your mages have the AW spec you only need one point to get them to equip better armor (the stats on mage robes don't make that much of a difference, the extra armor does), and just have one AW mage in massive armor keep aoe's down to keep as much of the hate as possible. The only thing you really lose by not having a warrior in the party is the champion's aoe buff, but if one of your rogues has bard then the song of courage makes up for it.

Seriously, single wield on rogues is underrated. Sure you don't get weapon skills, but doing 500+ damage backstabs makes up for it. When you dual wield even your main hand weapon loses damage. I don't think it's intentional, but I was only backstabbing for around 150-250 when dual wielding swords and 300-500 with sword and shield. Biggest hit was 520 I think, on an armored golem (telekinetic weapons ftw).
