I've been crashing to desktop randomly during fights since starting Awakening, so frequently it's just getting silly - I'm F5ing every 20yds.

It doesn't happen when the battle starts, but instead after the first few spells while I (as a rogue) am still closing in on them.
If I restart & reload, the battle can run fine in the exact same circumstances (worst chain I've had is 3 crashes from a vexing random Goon group in the city).

Obviously all of the same spells & visual effects are being used in the battles that do work, and it's happening on multiple maps (not just Amaranthine - approximate name ^_^ - which is where it first started).

I didn't see any forum threads on this topic, but is this common and are there any work-arounds?

I've had quite a few of these, myself. Once, after ebating certain optional boss in the Black Marshes I mapped to a next area, and had a fight which led to crash. And I had to fight that nasty boss again since I had forgotten to save >.<

Yeah, same here! I crashed a lot. The most annoying one when I was fighting the main end game boss (we all know who but don't want to spoiler it for others who don't) and they (to not give gender :3) were almost dead then BAM! I crashed...all I could think was "Thank the gods for autosave!" T_T

Autosave is nice, but there's no saving during boss battles.  I was this close [-] to finishing off a particularly electric foe, and wouldn't you know it, CTD.

even though this should go in the tech category.. one thing is if you are running vista or win 7... if you are running any gadgets on your desktop (like memory/cpu usage, weather, date/time, etc).. try disabling those. for me, its worked wonders.. it still occasionally crashes, but not nearly as often.

Using Windows 7 64bit on an Intel QX9650 CPU and GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU. I have been experiencing these crashes which I had not come across with Dragon Age: Origins on the same system using Windows Vista 64bit. I can not make sure whether it is a problem with the Awakening expansion or the OS. A bad coincidence, that is my untimely decision to upgrade from Windows Vista to Windows 7...

-Minimize cpu usage by turning off excess things that start at boot (ie, Steam)
-Close any other programs running. (ie Internet Explorer can be a real memory hog.)
-If you're running a dual or quad core processor, turn off all but one. (start DA, minimize, open task manager, right click on DAorigins.exe, choose set affininty, uncheck boxes of that only one core is selected) If you have an eight core processor, do the same, but I salute you. ;)

It will still crash. but less often. You might want to take things like Mass Paralyze, Stonefist, and Holy Smite out of the automatic tactics so you can make sure that only one of them gets used at a time. They're big crash triggers, and are worse if more than one happens at once.

It just occurred to me that reducing graphics quality may help, as well, although I haven't tried that.

Good luck! Oh, and you might want to just do the affinity thing before the really big battles that always cause a crash--it really slows down your frame rate.

PS. I think you mean 'So many combat crashes, it's unreal.' ;)
