I played through both quests (Amaranthine- help the guards or the smugglers) and you get the Landsmeet Shield on the Smuggler's quest, plus you  can free Jacen, while you can get some trickster's gear and the nimble boots if you side with the law.

Is there any way to get the landseet shield, and more importantly free Jacen without siding with the smugglers?

I found the Landsmeet Shield at some other point in the game, because I sided with the guards, not the smugglers. But I never met any Jacen, no.

Odd, I found the Landsmeet shield later on towards the end of the game. You dont get Jacen though if you do the good side.

There is more than one Landsmeet shield in the game (found two in my game).

I found a landsmeet shield on those two dragons the Architect has us fight in the Silverite Mines.
