Edit: I just realized that I made this topic in the classes forum, while it's supposed to be in the quests and story forum. I already copy-pasted this thread to the Quest and Story forum, so this topic can be closed by a mod.

There's the alternate-timeline theory.

Far, far in the future, the Proto-Reaper species found that something was eating suns, causing premature total heat death of the galaxy. Desiring to preserve themselves, they explored several methods of preserving themselves. One was to incorporate their entire civilization in to space-faring biological/synthetic spaceships. The second was to create a one-way, one-use time-travel device to send themselves back in time so that they might have more time to figure out what is eating suns.

So, they go back in time, and find their own civilization, in its early stages - the Protheans. They also consume every other species, as a way of preserving them until they can figure out what is eating suns. They'll likely continue this process until they've found out what is eating suns.

"Salvation through destruction."

This is all paraphrased from a well-constructed image I found, and I take no credit for the ideas found therein.  I can post the image somewhere, if it would help.

If they depleted the galaxy, why would they return after only 50,000 years? Is that the respawn rate?

I like my theory more. Shameless Plug.

Let's see this time travel image. I want to use it to make a Turian air quotes Mime.

I never said that the first time they returned it was after only 50.000 years. Only after they realized it takes about 50.000 years for organics to reach their top they decided to start the 50.000 cycle.

No offense, but this theory is full of plotholes and impossible scenarios. this theory is not very likable to be true.

Besides, I would hate it if they would introduce time-travel to Mass Effect.

But why do they need organics? To reproduce? If to reproduce, why do some races work and others don't?

If they're immortal why reproduce at all?

If you're arrogant enough to want to become immortal in the first place, you most likely won't stop there. These greedy son of a b*tches want more and more!

Besides, they need resources, and while they're at it, why not either turn an entire race into a new (better?) Reaper or enslave an entire race (Collectors)?

So instantaneous travel between galaxies that are many light years apart is cool, but time travel isn't?

Well duh! They can bend the space-time with mass-effect. But how are you planning to go BACK in time? That would create countless of loopholes. Especially if they would kill their own former self. How would that be a smart thing? I dunno, but if I would kill my mother in the past, then how could I even exist right now in the first place?

It certainly has possibilities luc0s I will admit.

As for them eventually becoming reapers from what they once were....thats called evolution, and also, quite feasible yes.

As fpr immortality, dont we all want that? Hell, if your religious, its even in the bible.....

So yes, your theory is quite plausible imo.

timetravel..shiny red eyes..robots..terminators? AAAAAHHH PLAAAYGUU!!

Timetravel for 50.000 years, easy for the reapers to go back in time if they fail..and knowing their enemys would be easy for them as well. They could just go back 30 years and wipe out everything..again. That way there would be no Shepard there to stop them.
