Well, good thing graphics cards are so freaking expensive. The way I see it is if you can buy a computer that can run DA:O then you can surely afford to buy the game. I payed almost 1 grand for my laptop, and it will hardly run any next-gen game on low settings. I spent about half the price for my PS3... I'm stuck with playing Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and Sid Meier's: Pirates! lol.
Sadly having a lot of money does not follow from spending a lot of money, what actually seems to often happen is that many gamers spend all their money on their gaming system, leaving them with no money to buy the games with ^^

So if I walk into a grocery store...steal a bag of...cookies..and the owner catches me..I can just say I'm pirating and not stealing? Just walk out of the store and not get prosecuted? hehe
Righto.
Dumb analogy.
A better example would be: I walk into a grocery store and see a bag of cookies I like, but don't want to pay for them. I wave my magic wand and make a copy of the bag of cookies and walk out of the store.

Plus, I would like to point out, many games do release demos and then people buy games based on those demos and then find that the demo was misleading. Also, just because you don't agree with their score given to Awakening doesn't mean the review sites were wrong. Reviews are based on opinions. In the opinion of some people, Awakenings is better then Origins. You might not agree but that's your problem isn't it. If spending that money on the game was such a chore, then you should have just waited for it to become available on bargain bin or waited for more reviews to come out.

Yea, I bet anyone can go past their budget buying those gaming computers. My laptop wasn't overly expensive it was mainly the extended warranty that drove the price past the 1 grand mark. Anyways, I needed a decent laptop for college and that is exactly what I got. Trust me, if anyone knows about not having money its me. A college student's budget really isn't a good one for gaming lol.

Well when you and 10 other people chip in and cycle games among each other is truly the college gamer's life.

That's pretty much why I stopped downloading demo's, they usually don't give a very good impression of the full game.Plus, I would like to point out, many games do release demos and then people buy games based on those demos and then find that the demo was misleading.

That is exactly what I would've been doing if I could still afford the tuiton at my University lol. Freaking government thought 50 grand a year was enough to fully finance a 4 year institution (go figure). Anyways, now I'm stuck at a community college, but it isn't too bad. I no longer have to deal with stadium sized lecture halls, and the community bathroom was kinda yuck in the sanitary department lol.

I feel your pain. I had to decide between buying books (that I wouldn't even use ever again) or getting a PS3. Well I went with the PS3 but now to do my work I have to rush to the library early in the morning.
CC? I couldn't deal with my parents anymore. I had to get away. Though I might need to transfer which is going to suck because that's even more money to use. *shakes head*
Yup. Yay for private bathrooms!
My lecture halls aren't stadium sized though it is a rather small private college. I think the most I've ever had in a class was about 40 the least 12.

And since they (poor college students) are probably the core pirate demographic, does it really matter if they pirate or not? it's hard to argue a game they pirate will be a lost sale when they don't have the money to buy the game in the first place.
The impression I get from these discussions is that the people that have money (generally people older then 25) don't pirate and the people that do pirate still pay a sizable portion of their income to entertainment.
Thus I feel it's really hard to argue that pirating is hurting the entertainment industry (infact both the gaming and movie industries seems to be doing really well). So while you can claim moral high ground by opposing piracy, I don't think you can argue that the removal of piracy would improve the industry.
However piracy does affect the industry in notable ways, the CEO's realize that there's only so much money going around and they'd much rather have people pirate everyone elses games then their own, and when it comes down to it some games are easier to pirate then others. Most notably it's much easier to pirate PC games then console games (although x-box games can be pirated) and it's really hard to pirate multiplayer games (pesky centralised servers) while fairly easy to pirate singleplayer games. This is why we're seeing more and more games being made for console first, pc second and why there appears to be many more multiplayer focused games made then singleplayer ones. Though this doesn't mean that singleplayer PC games will die, as long as there still exists any profit in making them, someone will make them.

Private University! Man, you are freaking lucky I can bearly afford a state university lol. I remember the bathrooms smelled like B-O, and the dorms were so freaking small and cramped. I'm a lot more happier staying with my parents than those dorms, but I do miss borrowing PS2, PS3, and old PC games from some of my neighbors lol. Anyways, don't get me started with the books. I mean they cost a fortune, and their sell back value at the school you bought them from is like less than half of what you payed. Also, the meal plans were the worst. The food sucked, and if you didn't buy it they fined your a**. We are very off-topic lol.
We are but this topic will be locked anyway.
Yes private university is win. I have my own room too which makes it better.
Oh yes books are expensive. I spent 800+ dollars on books last year. And it was only 7 books! >_< 2 of those I couldn't sell back due to being lab manuals! (worst part. I only ended up doing 7 labs <_< ) Still passed the class but the other pages haunt me so.
Yeah the food is gross too.

Oh yea, I forgot the mods are napping lol. I have some empathy for people that are in college who pirate games. I mean college kids really get no break with money. I remember my university pulled some crap on all the books making them custom editions so you have to buy their overpriced copy when the only difference is page numbering... Pretty much all our hard-earned money goes straight into the pockets of the freaking administration. I remember some of the admins had Porshes and Cameros (or whoever you spell their names) while I'm walking to my job and back lol. I really don't care if Bioware gets a profit or not (have my own financial issues), but I do pay for all the games I own.
Hey that 5 bucks I put in goes into their pockets.
And yes that old "let's change the numbering and call it a brand new book!" is extremely irritating. And then its so bloody hard to find an older edition so you don't *have* to pay the ridculous prices. *shakes head* Its just ridculous. We really don't get any break with money. Though I must thank you all for your reviews on Awakening. If I had chipped in to buy that...well...that wouldn't have been fun.
I don't even own the game.

I was going to pop in and add a few more points to the debate, but upon momentary reflection I see the futility in it. If you have to explain to someone why pirating is bad, they're probably not worth the effort of the explanation.
If you saw someone sitting on a park bench getting ready to pick their teeth with a battery powered electric drill and you said to them "hey man, that's really dangerous" and their response was "really? how so? where is your proof? define danger.", you would hopefully recognize them as too stupid to live and get on with your day.
It's the same thing here. If you honestly lack the common sense to see why you shouldn't pirate games, you're a moron. So that's my post. Goodnight!
Thanks you for explaining why you add nothing to the discussion.... at some lenght
Anytime
If you had actually read the thread I added plenty to the "discussion", insofar as this counts as one. Your short little comments sure have elevated it to a new level though! Truly, your wit shines through your terrible typing.

OMFG I thought I would get over my procrastination phase after highschool. I guess I was wrong lol. Freaking life of a college kid sucks, but its awesome at the same time lol.
O_o Oh crap. I have essays due as well come to think of it. Aw...there went my Sunday. *sighs* Yay, A whole day of doing papers. <_< How fun.
Yes it is awesome. And yes it does suck. So much work to do. So little time.
Oh god I hate calculus. Mostly because I suck at it but still.

1.sticking insane DRM on to games is a big no no you think they would understand this.
2.differating release dates ****** me off why you cant release a game worldwide at the same time puzzles me.
3.Shafting many countries with increased games priceing just because you can, see prices in europe compared to the americas.

+1 , however you forgot CA, Empire total war is perhaps the single most dissapointing game ive ever played in over 15 years of gaming in all genres. CA are just graphics ****s, i wish they bring back actvision to do the Total War series but Blizzard baught them out.
People Really need to take a look at blizzard Entertainment now that i mention this. I mean this company really does set the bar high for pirates to hurdle over. Blizzard should seriously think of distributing their methods to VIP employers of companies to prevent piracy all together.
For exsample when they braught the cd key lock method for starcraft,. As a matter of fact 1/4 of the starcraft multiplayer population dissapeared because of their technology including myself. Take a look at world of warcraft, there is a 0 tolerence for hacking and interfering with the servers and its the number 1 game in the world (unfortunently might i add).
My response to those who pirate games cause they can not afford it, is that you should either purchase online or dont play computer games. I mean you spend a fortune on an education and you want to waste your money, why not insted pay your rent and save for your education fee's. Granted you need a break, but if i were in that situation i would be out at the pub drinking beer trying to get some college girls. (Or boys if i was a girl, for those who cry about being sexist)

I used to pirate games ages ago, back when starcraft and diablo 1 were the the latest release. Nowdays everything i buy is legit. Companies hate piracy because these lose money and the people who produce these games hate pirates even more because they steal their goods after all the hard effort (or we like to think).
Ive also never downloaded demo's. they are like the Junk food of the PC world. All they do is clog up your computer with advertisments and a dodgy game.
Piracy is a very real thing, just like terrorism it will never cease to exsist even when we think its dissapeared. Its when piracy is done on a industrial scale that i belive is a serious offence. One of the most annoying things that happens and still does, is that the bloody idiots who make these games expect two copies of the game if you want to play over a LAN internet connection (because the cd keys are the same). Very rarely if at all have i seen people not use some way to copy their game to play over lan.
This is why i usually end up having a second copy or using Deamon tools to keep my origional unscratched because companies are too stupid to think for the average customer who wants to play a freindly game with their freinds online.
Bethesda and a lot of other single player games still make millions with minimal piracy because people belive to support companies that provide decent games. However You got to ask yourself why CA made Empire total war for an exsample it had over 900 pages of complaints on the forum after less than a week of its release due to the extreme bugs in it, and people wonder why piracy exsists.
you reap what you sow , in otherwords if you dont provide the neccecary means to archive the consumers benchmark they will find a way to reach it. This obvously does not apply to the mass piracy producers which should be all shut down.
I agree with this person said. Piracy can only be justified by companies releasing ****** poor games at stupid prices (the customer needs to be able to protect themselves from non-functioning products). If the company does a good job with their products then the customers of said products feel less compulsion to pirate future titles from that company and may even buy the product 'blindly' simply because they have placed trust in the company. Additionally, the person may pirate one game from the company, and subsequently buy said product or buy future releases from that company because they liked the game. I have been on both sides of the fence, pirated a game liked it so bought it and future releases from that company. On the other hand I blindly (was at some game store, parent offered to buy me something on a whim so was not like I could do research) bought a game and wished I pirated it because nothing shown on the box, in the user manuel, on reviews was actually in the game, needless to say I will not be buying from that company again.
My 2 cents: To summerize some things I read but cannot recall the exact sources (otherwise I would add the links). There are two sorts of pirates, ones who would buy you game and ones who would not anyway, the people in the would not outnumber the ones who do. For the most part DRM add negative value to game products as the DRM process can add system instabilties to the persons computer, allow for malware hacks to be ran, add dependencies to disks, crap like that. If companies would have it so their DRM would have some value to the customer (example, steam, it is a DRM service but allows you to go diskless, and offers a way to order games etc). Additionally, all DRMs will eventually be broken so it really does not protect your product but for so long.
