Since a lot of people are going to be picking up Dragon Age: Origins because of all the interest surrounding Awakening, I'd thought I'd share with you a guide I've been putting together for that game. I mainly make videos about Mass Effect 2, but I've done several playthrough's of DA:O as well as some extensive research on the game. As a request from my viewers, I'm going to be using a 2-handed warrior warden, only one mage, and not using Starfang or WC armor, though I will be talking about using them. Didn't want to make the game too easy...

Check out my blog for more in depth written content: http://averagegatsby.blogspot.com/

Intro
How the Guide Will Work

Kokari Wilds: (More of an intro, prep walkthrough and soliciting opinions)
Part 1 / Swarmed by Wolves
Part 2 / Hurlock Emmisary, Chasind Flat Blade
Part 3 / Scattering the Ashes and the Hurlock Alpha

Tower of Ishal: (Start here if you really want to get into it)
Build, Preparation, Tactics Setup, The exterior &  the entrance
Moving up through the Tower, and the Ogre battle

Honnleath:
Entering the town, Sten Tanking, Descending into the Cellar
Further in the Cellar and meeting "Kitty"

Circle Tower:
First Floor, Summoning Sciences, Shale Tanking
Easter Egg, Second Floor, Anti-Mage, Which Passive to Use
Fighting the Revenant, Part 1 of the Third Floor

Let me know what you think, and I hope this helps.

do you plan to tank as 2-handed or not? just saw only part 1 and didnt catch if you plan to tank with you or not.

edit: I really like the "wow style" view best, actually i used the tactical only on 2-3 occasions...so i enjoy viewing it in that mode.

btw that tactical view has it's big disadvantages because you dont have free camera :-( it's limited ;-( i needed better view at archdemon fight in first walkthrough, but didnt got it, so mostly the wow style is best

I plan to go the Melee dps, not tank, route with my char. However, I'm going to spec Sten to tank as a 2-hander, so you'll see both.

ok i think you already know it but there are things that bother me... why didnt you put health poulices to your AB (the same with poison). War has not THAT much skills and the AB can be drawn to full screen and that's plenty of room. I even had health and mana poulices on mine mage

Just forgot. Should have pointed that out. I'll have that on my next videos.

Okay this is a tiny git off topic but what made you choose the human origin over say the dwarf or elf??

Familiarity really. I knew I could blast through the Origin story quickly, whereas I've not done a dwarf origin or a city elf, and I've only done a wood elf once.

I find the city elf and noble dwarf origin most appealing. What i ment to ask was did you pick the human for the quick origin as you stated or for race starting stats?^_^

 Tower of Ishal Part 2:
Moving up through the Tower, and the Ogre battle

One reason why I think people run into trouble with dragon age is that they let themselves aggro too many enemies at one time. Early game, before getting the weapons and armor you need, survivability is pretty much the major issue. This is especially true at this section of the tower, because it is very easy to aggro many enemies at once, while the warden will not have a proper tank or healer with her/him.

I've also got a new blog where I'll be making written entries about this game and others. Check it out: http://averagegatsby.blogspot.com/

So I mainly chose it for the quick start, but the attributes do make a difference:

Assuming you put all points in strength:
Humans and Dwarves: lvl 1 20 strength, lvl 7 38 strength
Elves: lvl 1 19 strength, lvl 7 37 strenght.

That one strength means elves need one more level, unassisted by items, in order to wear massive armor. I'm not sure that my 2-handed warrior will be wearing massive armor, but if you are going to take Warden Commander armor, which is great for 2-handers, it is massive and you'll need the strength.

Ah. Mainly for the quick start. The starting stats don't actually make much of a difference though.

Both will actually reach the point where she/he can wear massive armor at the same level

Elf Strength stat: lvl 1 14 strength, lvl 9 38 strength (putting all points in strength)
Human Strength stat: lvl 1 15, lvl 9 39 strength (putting all points in strength)
Dwarves: Same as humans

Ok hehe well thanx for clearing that up for me.

The quoted info is wrong. I posted it and then realized my mistake. The old entry has the right info now.

Feel free to watch some of my videos if you like Two handed Warriors. Some 85 of them on DA:O, mostly with the 2H, covering different stages of the game. 16 for my Best Party series with the party banter, guaranteed to cause some hard laughing! =) Oh boy, it's been 5 months already since I started playing with a small break recently but the "tesão" for the game is back!

Ah, some of them made just to show how mages are far from obligatory. Nice battles there with no mages in the party and some "epic" moments too, like in my most viewed one. In time, all my videos are Nightmare.

And now that I recreated that char, rushed thru Origins with no DLC items on the char, to get him used to it for Awakening, I have a few questions about it, if someone can help me, please?

First, I'm happy that Awakening chose for Oghren the same set I chose for my char in this latest pre-Awakening playthrough. LotD armor rulez for melee char, imho. But how come Oghren in the expansion has a hell lot more points to distribute right at the first meeting him than my imported char? I mean, my Rage was 25 when finished Origins and Oghren is now 25 too (vs 24 in Origins) but he has so many more points for talents and not sure but seems like for skills too. Will I get those extra points when I respec my character?

And should I wait to level all the party members, or at least to spend some spec and talent points until I unlock the new specializations? How far I need to go into the game to unlock them?

PS.: I had my warrior with 38 STR at level 6 but that's because I gain the "Grimoire of Frozen Lands" for every new char. (+3 attributes book for C.E. owners)

Excellent videos! I've just started my first 2H warrior, too, also on nightmare. I confess I kited the ogre. Pincushioning the beast took a lot longer than your battle and didn't feel very satisfying. Now I know I could have done it relying on shield bash and pommel strike to prevent grab death.

Loved your ME2 vids and am watching this too as its been a while since i played DA too.

Not sure if you have it or not but the Detailed Tooltip addon i find is a must for this game so i have proper info on what each ability does.

MASSIVE ARMOR [chest mainly] IS NOT good for 2handers. 2Handers are all about actively using their skills meaning you can not have too big fatigue. Have offpieces massive if ya want, but for chest ur better with leather "empires shadow" for example

BTW, for nightmare level guys, be sure every char has ranged weapon :) 3 chars shooting from ranged at 1 target is huge dmg and often due to distance you dont pull other mobs

@ oggre fight you could just put them on ranged weapons, put each character in different direction [north east etc.] and shoot him, and kite him [run] with the one he would be chasing, did it at nightmare without taking single hit

That's so wrong, imho! Out of my 100 DA movies, some 90 are for my favourite char, my Two Hander. In early game yes, massive is way wrong. But as soon as you're strong enough, as a two hander should be focused, and you start finding some nice armor sets with bonus to reduced fatigue, cheaper talents cost and % critical damage (like Warden Commander's Plate & set)  and my favourite when running with no DLC items , Legion of The Dead, with cool bonus to willpower, attack, constitution and damage.

Oh, and I've played with some parties with no mages, others full melee, others with no alistair/shale or any tank whatsoever but my 2 hander and one or both of the other 2 Hander NPC's and he kick some serious azz!

If you want some serious damage, just use some sustained combos. Zerk, Rally, Precise Strike and Powerful swings and see your 2Hander hitting massive critical hits sequences for amazing damage!

I don't have a new video yet, but I do have a blog entry outlining all of my build plans and goals, so hopefully that will clear a few things up if people have moved on ahead of me.
