OK, so, being in Europe and all, I went and chose to get Digital DeLuxe from ea.co.uk.

Now I searched this forum and found the same question I want to ask now - that one was left without answer, so I hope someone now will find a minute to answer. How does this **** works?

I get an email with link to download site and use there code provided, right?

What's teh speed? I know, it depends from my end of the tube also, but should I be prepared for like hours/days downloading?

Will the servers be overcrowded and download gone to the ground?

What's your experience with digital downloads and EA store?

I *think* the download itself will be released a day before the "release" date (or earlier). And then you'll be sent the serial code on the release day (10am PST for us in NA). I've heard > 300k/s. Maybe 8-10 hours for the 15 gig distro? Its a paid for service so download speeds are good, at least what I've heard. Maybe less time. Hopefully.

so you download the whole game before release date and then just wait for a serial in your inbox? would be nice then.

I may be wrong but I can't recall any of the digital distribution sites (Steam, D2D etc) saying that they will be giving a pre-release download so alot of people will be hitting these sites at about the same time. Its a big download, which could take quite a while to download and if something goes bad on the download your only recourse will be to do it all again. Thanks but no thanks.

Given the apparent wide spread interest to this game (EA advertising machine go!) I fully expect that we will see a good number of threads on the net complaining about slow downloads and unable to connect issues.

Even a slow download would be faster than waiting for online shipping.

I have pre-purchased several games through Steam and I've never had to wait with downloading until release day. What usually happened was being able to download almost everything in the week before, only to finish up with a cmall bit after Steam "unlocks" the game on release day. It's what I'm expecting to happen again here.

The good thing is being able to play almost as soon as the clock hits midnight, no risk of it getting lost in the mail. The annoying thing is webshops often delivering preorders 1-3 days early, meaning you're sitting there watching the clock in Steam while others are cackling with glee and playing the game already...

On their end, the download speed should be good. You're paying for the service of the download, so they usually have good service. At least, that has been my experience with the two or three major titles I've downloaded.

It all depends on your connection really, I just DL installed and patched a 15 gig game in a little under 4 hours the other day. I'm hoping most people interested enough in the game to preorder , are going the physical copy way I can see D2D's servers bogging down to hell when the DL opens up.

Maybe but I have had some good luck with Amazon in the past with game deliveries coming before offical release dates so lets hope they keep up the run  

Also I can't imagine sitting waiting for hours for the download to complete, every fibre itcting to play, only to find something has gone wrong and you have to redownload it all again. 

Not bashing digital download as I have many games on steam but nothing close to the size of this download and that kind of puts me off.  However good luck to everyone who has gone this route .... um .... may your bits stream true or something

...EA store sells DDversion for 39GBP, but steampowered for 49GBP... and really - if you don't want the map so much, digital version seems logical way to go.



Well, it would be definetly awesome, if we could use some download manager software or get access to actual FTP, but I doubt it.

I've bought both Crysis and Crysis Warhead as digital downloads from the ea store before. And both games got loads off traffic upon release, and I still had the game on the day off the release. So I'd say unless EA has somehow messed up their servers since then, the download speeds will be in the very least decent.

Speed is a major concern with digital distribution.  If you have a slow connection, you're better off getting a retail version. 

I wouldn't be concerned about server load.  It's gotten alot better over the years and they know that there's going to be a downloading frenzy come November 3rd.

It's always taken way too long for the game to download itself onto my computer.  Every time I've gotten a digital version, it's taken about 4-8 hours to download and install, which is why I don't use the service.  I bought a digital version of Jade Empire once and I was running into all sorts of problems.  I spent a grand total of two days redownloading/installing and talking to tech support before it finally worked.  Although tech support was fantastic, the vast majority of my time was spent redownloading the game.

Basically all is fine.

If D2D [i bought it from there after all, not from EA] gives pre-release download - even better, but mostly people hadn't problems with speeds. Mostly.



Well, if the speed is about 300kb/s it ends up in 19h. D2D has download manager, who restores download if broken [can't say it 100% - that's what the website says]. My tube could manage about 1mb/s, so it's below 6h. I can wait that much.



AND, if "pre-release" 99% download is opened about a week before release date - pfff, who needs that hardgoods?!

While the footprint is detailed at 20 gigs on drive after installation/use, I'm not expecting to have to download that. I'm curious what the actual downloaded installer will weigh in at.

D2D is what I normally use for such things.

With that site, after you purchase the DL you normally come to another window with DL info and keys there (they should also send you keys through the e-mail of the address you sighed up with)

DL speed, as you said, is alot up to your end of the connection but also any mirror sites (if any) you get the program from and other factors.

I would suggest DLing this when you are at home in case any problems, but maybe something where you are watching tv or playing a console game (as playing on the pc while DLing can slow  it down)

So far I got only one e-mail from D2D [I bought it there after all] and that was "Order had been processed" one. No more mails with keys or smthn.



But they should be only mailed when download becomes available, are they not?

Yes you get those codes when the game gets released.I ordered from D2D as well(because I don't need the tin case and cloth map) and thats what it says in the Email I got from them,right after purchase.
I would love it if they make preload available.I guess we just have to wait and see.

A week before would be good. At least a week - to spare the possible nailbiting.
