The character introductions are done much better in this game, the levels, although tight paths, feel less obvious than the main game. The art design is also somewhat more inspired. The story telling feels tighter and the new skills (particularly the Rogues) are great. Overall I'm enjoying it more so than the main game and somewhat sad as we don't really get many expansion packs anymore due to console "DLC" drips.

I'm only a couple of hours into it but am loving it so far and my only regret is that it'll end more quickly than I would like. There are a couple of glitches I've seen on the PS3, mostly to do with extreme slowness when there's a lot going on, lots of NPCs and enemies all being run at the same time. But it's not enough to really detract from the game itself.

I was able to import my favorite character with no problems, although of course it did lose Starfang; unsurprising for an item from a DLC pack.

I didn't really notice how much I was enjoying it until I had been playing for a bit and suddenly realized how much fun I was having. I've been playing a lot of Fallout 3 while I waited for this expansion and there's just no comparison at all, DA just blows it totally away.

The haters? They can bite me. Best, they should find a game that they _do_ like and go play it instead of complaining here.

When the haters report in with an 8 hour play through of Awakenings, its like they've turned a big spotlight onto their own values. They're dancing around, waving their arms "Look at me, look at me. Look how fast I finished this game. It's too short, its too expensive".

Certainly you "finished" the game. But you didn't play it. You saw the means to an end and followed the most direct route to the finish line. Done & done. Good for you, now quit acting like your experience is the definitive one.

19 hrs. & I am right with Viglin- one more location to quest, more loot than I know what to do with, and a bigger fan of Wade & Herrin than I've ever been.

I've been looking for it, but are there any threads that explain the rune-crafting features? Clunky comes to mind, is it really this convoluted?

It's true there are bugs, and some of them are serious enough to cause computer "freeze" etc. I don't think such bugs are Awakening specific; because I experience them in Origins also. When these occur, I simply kill the game process and reload. Granted, this is a royal pain, but I'm sure these problems will be fixed during the course of my anticipated long association with this game.

The simply fact is that this (the game in general) is an incredible accomplishment in art and software development. I've been a computer engineer and software developer for 40 + years, and also am an experienced 3D artist. As such, I recognize the amount of work that goes into an expansion like Awakening - in spite of some people trivializing the accomplishment.

I hope the hard-earned money I paid for this game and the expansion contributes to success for the developers, and many more happy releases in future.

The pc version is typical expansion price £19.99, the extra +£10 is due to console tax or some crap, either way, it's a pc game that should be played on the pc, if you are playing it on the console, it's probably because you are being forced too. Even at 8 hours, £19.99 is about 2/3 the price of a retail pc game typically sitting in at £29.99, in the case of Modern Hypefare 2, it sits at a price of typically £39.99 with ONLY  about 6 hours of single player gameplay, and a not very good one at that. For the pc, this is tremendous value for money. Especially in this day and age with console internet connections meaning publishers are trying to charge £5-10 for 5 friggin mulitplayer maps or £5 for a re-skinned model. I think people should be pretty bloody grateful to Bioware for this product. You got yourself a high quility expansion pack like from one of the top dev's around, like  the old days, before we were charged through the nose.

Seriously, you might do us a favor by offering some actual useful feedback, rather than whining about the fact you didn't like the game ... and whining with the same line you've already used elsewhere.

It is true that customer feedback is important and if we don't like the product we should let the company know why - but nonconstructive criticism is as worthless as blind brand whorship.  I know angry recrimination is easy to accomplish in the 30 second attention span most posters on internet boards can muster, but it doesn't get anything done.

Well forgive me if I don't write paragraphs to make my point.

Bioware: Take your time on the next expansion.

Was that simple enough for you, you caveman?

Bugs that deprive us from full gameplay? Got me pissed enough to leave the expansion on halt until patches are coming.

I am actually enjoying Awakening, despite missing my old companions, and feeling like it lacks some continuity. I especially enjoy the scenery...and Oghren. That dwarf always cracks me up. Good thing he hung around. XD. But it did indeed seem like a rushed game. The characters and plotlines didn't seem as developed. D: IMO, BioWare really should take their time on plots and characters in their next addition to this...it would make a world of difference.

I am still awed by the graphics and the scenery, though. Especially the parts where you go into the Deep Roads. If anything, I praise the expansion for that and end this post on a positive note. ;)

Hi everyone,

although I'm a big fan of bioware games thus far, I can't help but confess that I am a bit dissapointed with awakening. That is not surprising considering all great games (with the exception of BG 1 imho) are very difficult to expand and make a sequel more succesfull compared to the original.

I have a tendency to replay many many times a game I trully like. Unfortunately I did not find awakening as compeling as origins.

Allow me to agree with some people expressing negative comments about the duration of awakening. Indeed it was too short and left me with the feeling that it had nothing to do with origins regarding the story and atmosphere. The V.O. isn't half as good as origins, the lack of interaction with the party members at will, as well as the limitation of the activities regarding Vigils Keep left a bitter taste.

Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps I was expecting something like the prelude to Dragon Age 2, but it doesn't change the fact that the overal experience felt like it was rushed and allow me to say "incomplete".

I would have expected at least one new origin, many things to do in the keep conserning its functionality (just remember half the things you could do in nwn 2 at crossroads keep, assign seargents, recruit soldiers, keep your land safe etc ) and of course every new feature introduced with the expansion to be included in the original game as well. But I really did not like awakening leaving me with the feeling it was almost a mod instead of an expansion of Dragon Age.

Last but not least, allow me my geek request....Please make some capes!!

Best regards to everyone.

I like the some of the minor (well some could be considered major) changes they made in Awakenings:

1. I being able to purchase the different heraldry symbols and apply them to shields
2. I like the idea of crafting my own runes, instead of hoping a merchant has the 1 I want
3. I LOVE love love love that we can now add runes to armor.
4. I like some of the new poisons/coatings/bombs: I use the elemental bombs a lot!
5. I like the entire concept of Vigil's Keep:
-- I like having more than 1 merchant to shop from
-- I like how the Keep changes as you upgrade it
-- I enjoy the different daylight settings
-- I enjoyed the little quests that took place at the Keep
6. I LOVE the party storage chest.
7. I'm really digging the loot: There's so many cool axes and swords and shields to choose from that it's really hard to make a decision. Some of the armor can be pretty cool as well (though I'm still rocking the Juggernaut armor w/ Ring of Ages - I'm a resistance freak).
8. I like that you get more money for completing side-quests from the different boards. I forgot what quest it was, but I received 20 gold from a chanter's board request! This is much better than the 2 or 3 gold you got in DAO.
9. I like Sir Pounce-a-lot.. I mean really, LOLz

10. I like the potential for the companions, though like I've expressed in another thread, it's hard to get to know them with the new conversation system (which I am not a fan of). This makes me sad because I'd love to find about a lot more about Anders, and get inside Nathaniel's head (I'm a HNF, and it seems by not freeing up the conversation, a good opportunity for complex character develop was lost).

I think these things (minus the dialogue issue) are steps in the right direction, and I hope to see more of them.

Not be shoot you down, but 1,2,3,6, and 7 were mostly (if not all) present through mods before Awakening was released. Granted, Bioware may or may not have taken inspiration from the mods, given that Awakening was in development before DA:O was released, but I like to give credit where it's due.

Other than that, I mostly agree with you, Awakening is still a great game in its own right. I may have a slightly different opinion than most people because I've actually experienced very few of the bugs being mentioned multiple times on the forums (*knocks on wood*). Still, a less buggy game would have been nice, if only to assuage those who are being plagued with bugs.

And I completely agree about the conversation system. I HATE it. The dialogue in DA:O was what really made the game for me, as I actually got attached to the characters, which for me tends to happen only with quality storywriting.

Very well said. Awakening has some flaws even 2 major flaw(DLC not carrying over when mods do & way too many bugs at launch such as starfang/vigilance combo! lol) but despite those flaws Awakening holds so many new & wonderful experiences/features that I will never look back & regret this pruchase. They really raised the bar & out did themselves yet again.

I also can't see everyone's hatred for the new dialogue system in Awakening. I think it is far superior even though it lacks depth & romance this is only an expansion & most likely will not be the same in the next full Dragon Age installment so please stop acting like children & complaining so darn much about one aspect. You're not meant to fall in love with any of these characters & if you actually play the game instead of crying you'll find you can have a lot of deep conversations with your companions. This is only an expansions designed to focus on the story of the Darkspawn within this Dragon Age it's not a drama about your PC's love life. If you want drama & romance go watch Desperate Housewives or Grey's Anatomy & stop crying on these forums where Bioware is looking for real feeedback not a bunch of children stuck on repeat like a long car ride.

We got it you don't like it! Mystery solved. lol.

I've played about 11 hours and its been very enjoyable so far. No major problems or bugs that I noticed.  And I'm still only on the second plot mission. Lots of content here if you take your time doing sidequests. I don't get all the whining and complaining. This is a good expansion. Similar to bg2:ToB in size. Could it be bigger, better, and more polished? Sure, if you're willing to wait another year or two.

I feel the exact same way! Plus we should be thankful this was an actual expansion that expanded on almost every aspect of the original game. I mean look at Fallout3 or Oblivions "expansions". They were fun but much shorter with a lot less new features brought into the game.
Also glad I'm not crazy...I noticed the art style has been tweaked just slightly & for the better but until now I haven't seen any mention of it so I thought I was losing it! lol :)

Not to shoot you down, but we console players didnt have access to them till now. Gets kinda tiring to see people assume, or forget, that everyone is playing on the Pc.

And to the person  earlier who said "those playing on consoles were forced too"...um no. I for one chose too, and loving it.

I can firmly say that this game met expectations. The new gear and stats turned my sword and shield warden into a fortress! There were plenty of times where I was taking 0 damage from overwhelm. :) I enjoyed the new characters. I was a little upset that Mhairi died. Ser Pounce-a-lot was great.

One thing that really enjoyed about the expansion was that they made a character mandatory for each area. This took away the chance for us to reject a character before actually getting to know them. Many of us had our desired parties for DA:O that we stuck to and never used anyone else (I for instance never used Zevran). The upkeep of the Vigil and hearings over the nobles added a great layer to the game which I really enjoyed.

The things that I don't like are that all of the sets require you use the head piece. I got kind of used to my main party in Origins walking around without head gear. I know, I'm on PC. I can download a mod to turn off helmets but eh...

The relentless crashes did get a bit tiresome. However I live in FL and with the constant electrical storms we experience here I'm well acquainted with the policy of saving and saving often. So I don't think I lost more than 10-20 minutes of progress.

All in all the new characters exceeded expectations. We had a comical relief replacement for Alistar and a few uptight people to mess with that were a bit Sten-ish. The new dagger model was pretty sick. I didn't find the stamina draughts too useful, but then I didn't rely on any abilities that cause you to lose stamina per hit or drain over time. I would have liked to see a new specialization that was geared for archers. It is the main reason I have not made one.

Having the ability to dump the 13~ stat points into a character when they join your character was excellent and was further enhanced by being able to completely respec them.

Was the expansion as long as I would have liked? No.

Were there a lot of challenging optional bosses to test your group? No

Was I dazzled by new engaging model designs? Unfortunately not

Either way, I felt it was a good addition to the story. Further more I liked that you can import a character prior to beating the Origins Campaign. So you can run around, pick up some sweet starter gear, and in a matter of hours be into the beginning of Awakening.

So for all you haters, you're completely entitled. I'm sure there are many games you've loved, which makes my skin crawl knowing I share the same planet with you, but I completely accept that this isn't one of them. And for those making fun of spelling I'd like to point out that this thread is for reasons you LIKED Awakening. So why you're posting complaints here is beyond me. It would be far more productive if you went back to playing Hello Kitty Roller Rescue. :)

Thank you for registering your copy.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, obviously. However, it is very easy to criticize someone elses work in this field and something completely different to try and actually create it yourself. As with everyone else complaining about the models and/or graphics i invite you to do better and prove it.

I'm probably about halfway through it, and I'm really enjoying it a lot so far. I never expected it to be as big as Origins, or have a better story and better quests, and I'm pleased with what we've gotten.

Bugs have mostly been a non-issue for me. I've seen a few minor ones, but they're actually less intrusive than some of the bugs I had to deal with in Origins. (Keep in mind I'm playing on 360, as I don't have a gaming PC. Even if I did, though, I still would have seriously considered the console version, as I have a nice TV and sound system and comfortable gaming chair.)

Regarding the conversation system, I really like it, but in the future I would like to see that sort of system used in tandem with the player-initiated dialogues seen in DA:O. I like that party member dialogues are spread throughout the game, as it could be too easy in some cases to get a party member's approval high enough to hear almost everything they had to say by the midway point in Origins. I also like that the objects you have to activate in order to initiate dialogues give the talks some focus and context, making them feel more natural than randomly approaching a companion and saying "So... tell me about yourself."

That said, I think it's strange and stretches credibility a bit that the Warden would let some of these people travel with him or her without wanting to get to know them a little bit, at least back at Vigil's Keep if not just anywhere. For DA2, or maybe even the next expansion, I would like to be able to ask companions about themselves and their motivations and the like while at camp, with dialogues restricted by approval level like in DA:O, and I think it would be totally appropriate and cool to use Awakening's system for the rest of the conversations.

ThomaVanguard, this is a non-spoiler forum, please edit your post.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through Awakenings and I'm enjoying it enormously. I was pretty shocked to check here this morning and find so much negativity. There's a few things I'm not thrilled with -- I miss the old companions, already saw more than enough of Oghren in Origins and don't like the new dialog system -- but overall I think the game is fantastic.

I haven't run into any bugs yet.
