I was starting to like (or make myself like) Oghren, by the end of Origins. I really despise him here. I hope there's a better twist to his 'ditch wife & baby' story because I'm not sympathetic as it is. He's also just - too gross. I refuse to click on him because I'm so sick of him burping... Ugh. Foul little man! And his humor here seems a little more juvenile or nasty, & he's got a new condescending attitude that I don't remember from Origins. But - who cares, really? Justice is superb - I adore him. He's everything I hoped Sten would be & more. Sigurd is adorable, Nathaniel would have been a great romantic interest for a noble human! (which I haven't been able to get through - she always seemed too pushy for Alistair to me.) I was very pleased with the 'married Alistair' cameo (and thanks to whoever made the mod that removes 'human noble only' requirements, btw)
All in all, I'm much happier than I expected to be. I'm not wild about the lack of a campsite, could live without the archivist's belt, & I think I preferred the old method of talking (rather than 'click on object if you happen to be holding down tab) - but some things are vastly improved. (again, environments) I'm liking the boss fights better. I felt the archdemon was something of a let down. Depending on which character I was on, I missed the actual felling a few times, & it missed something. (ie, I had no idea, ever, what the AD was thinking, if anything, what it wanted, why it wanted it, etc - this one is much improved)
The new specializations are good - I'm loving spirit warrior & battlemage - I like keeper just for the pretty effect, which I use constantly & never seem to need. I wish flicker was a little slower & that I could see my rogue a little, but rogue improvements are really good, too. (I have an elf mage, elf rogue & human warrior tank)
OK, I question the spirit warrior spell animation where your warrior squats & strains... It has to be said.... Could that be altered, somehow???? Please?
It's given its share of great lines, too. 'Lightning at fools' has to rank up there with the best. I also very much enjoyed the market place meeting on my human male noble.

My first playthrough, on my imported Warden, came in at just about 20 hours and I had fun through almost all of it. The story and characters were excellent, as usual, and I thought the settings and dungeons have definitely gone a step up (Kal'Hirol is one of my favorites). On the PC here and only 2 minor bugs came through in my first run and I'd imagine they'll be fixed in a patch sooner or later (the ending cutscene kept repeating over and over, esc got me out of the sequence).
The Runecrafting system definitely needs work, though, and I hope that'll be adressed at some point. As it stands, it's such a disorganized mess and it's nothing more than a hassle especially if the PC doesn't have the skill. But I certainly like the ability to craft our own runes and now that armor has rune slots = love!
I like the new conversation system, there are less breaks in the action and it's neat to see your companions interact with objects in the environment around them. I would definitely like to see a mix of the old and new convo systems as I found myself holding Tab all the time so as to not miss any conversation hot spot.
The new specs are a huge step in the right direction, I felt they were far more focused and useful, each one having its own speciality (Flicker is too much fun). Ultimately though, there were just too many skills and too many spells and not enough room on the bar or long enough fights to ulitize them (on nightmare even).
There's both good and bad. The good, for me, far outweighs the bad and I'm having just as much fun on my 2nd playthrough with my Orlesian Warden as I did on my first go 'round.

....and what a satisfying 19 hours it was...
I imported my DAO character and he imported perfectly.
Some people have been complaining that their characters have imported with no equipment because that equipment is DLC content, and since its been made clear that DLC content won't import into Awakening, thats why they didn't get it. Knowing this however, I had my warden in Wade's superior dragonbone armour, with maric's blade equipped.
A few things I enjoyed about this expansion...
- I can import my character, rather than begin anew.
- I actually enjoyed having Oghren join me...I couldn't give a nug's arse if he's a drunken fool, whose wife left him for a dwarven woman turned crazy diseased b****. The guy is funny, even if it's not hilarious, it at least gets a smile.
- I love the new characters, despite missing the old ones
- I love being in charge...with everyone referring to me as Commander...."yes commander, no commander, up yours commander"
- The new abilities and skills are brilliant
- Upgrading the keep was a great idea too, because, having to just fight darkspawn all the time gets boring, so getting to take time off and visit amaranthine to recruit merchants or do good deeds was fun.
Honestly, I don't see why people complain about it (and yes, I know people have a right to express their opinions) but I could understand their complaints if there was no expansion, but there is one...and it can set up nicely for DAO 2...
Some are saying its expensive for an expansion that lasts about 20 - 30 hours average, but all I am saying is at least there is one... I reckon people just like to nit pick at issues, but I see no point...you have an expansion, so just be happy with what it gives.
Although, certain issues are a little annoying but not to the point where I am furious...
The sentinel armour has a glitch and so does the vigilance sword...where the armour, except the helmet appears as the warden commander outfit from wardens keep DLC and the sword resembles starfang...I was hoping to see them how they should be, but alas they appeared as the glitch...I was unhappy but their stats were good enough that I didn't moan too long, because from what I'm aware Bioware are looking into the problem, and whenever they do, a patch is being created to sort it all out...
Overall the game was great...and I thoroughly enjoyed it...Now its all about the wait for DAO 2, and my only hope for that is that Morrigan plays a huge role in it and my warden can be imported for that too...because that storyline, Morrigan and my warden, was one of the most enjoyable parts of DAO and it would be awesome if Bioware actually do something with Morrigan since she is a brilliant character, and was made a great deal about in DAO with regards to her mother and her disappearance bearing a child.
Plus assuming as 'father figure' to my 'godchild' shall prove to be interesting...

I think the only other disappointing thing was that you didn't have more time to spend on getting to know the NPC's and also a 2 minute cut scene at the end with regards to your end game choices (including some action scenes for Oghren in particular) would have been better than the text boxes.

Bioware stated that the only DLC items that would tranfer are from RTO and Stone Prisioner.

I like the some of the minor (well some could be considered major) changes they made in Awakenings:
1. I being able to purchase the different heraldry symbols and apply them to shields
2. I like the idea of crafting my own runes, instead of hoping a merchant has the 1 I want
3. I LOVE love love love that we can now add runes to armor.
4. I like some of the new poisons/coatings/bombs: I use the elemental bombs a lot!
5. I like the entire concept of Vigil's Keep:
-- I like having more than 1 merchant to shop from
-- I like how the Keep changes as you upgrade it
-- I enjoy the different daylight settings
-- I enjoyed the little quests that took place at the Keep
6. I LOVE the party storage chest.
7. I'm really digging the loot: There's so many cool axes and swords and shields to choose from that it's really hard to make a decision. Some of the armor can be pretty cool as well (though I'm still rocking the Juggernaut armor w/ Ring of Ages - I'm a resistance freak).
8. I like that you get more money for completing side-quests from the different boards. I forgot what quest it was, but I received 20 gold from a chanter's board request! This is much better than the 2 or 3 gold you got in DAO.
9. I like Sir Pounce-a-lot.. I mean really, LOLz
10. I like the potential for the companions, though like I've expressed in another thread, it's hard to get to know them with the new conversation system (which I am not a fan of). This makes me sad because I'd love to find about a lot more about Anders, and get inside Nathaniel's head (I'm a HNF, and it seems by not freeing up the conversation, a good opportunity for complex character develop was lost).
I think these things (minus the dialogue issue) are steps in the right direction, and I hope to see more of them.
Not be shoot you down, but 1,2,3,6, and 7 were mostly (if not all) present through mods before Awakening was released. Granted, Bioware may or may not have taken inspiration from the mods, given that Awakening was in development before DA:O was released, but I like to give credit where it's due.
Other than that, I mostly agree with you, Awakening is still a great game in its own right. I may have a slightly different opinion than most people because I've actually experienced very few of the bugs being mentioned multiple times on the forums (*knocks on wood*). Still, a less buggy game would have been nice, if only to assuage those who are being plagued with bugs.
And I completely agree about the conversation system. I HATE it. The dialogue in DA:O was what really made the game for me, as I actually got attached to the characters, which for me tends to happen only with quality storywriting.
I play on a console. 1,2,3,6, and 7 were all new for me!

I agree some of the additions such as creating your own runes, and being able to increase vitality and stamina are pretty great. My character imported was at lv24 so everything is really easy to kill which kind of kills some of the excitement I suppose. I am glad not everything in my characters inventory was converted, but what model are they using for the conversion? It looks like everything that was on my party was converted..I think. Also is it possible to go back to Ferelden? It would be nice if I could go everywhere. I don't know if I can, but I was assuming this would be possible. I think there are tons of quests and stuff to pick up so I have not been disapointed at all. I didn't pay $40 for this so I am not unhappy at all. I think it was worth the $30 I paid for it, but then again, I would have paid forty for this no problem. I didn't think this expansion pack would be another full game as it seems some people on here are alluding to, so I am not unhappy with this.
Nope once you port into Awakening..you can't go back. If you make an Orlesian warden, that warden can't go to Origins. Would have been nice to be able to go back and forth, but with the missing companions..that kind of takes the fun out of it I guess.
Not saying I don't like this expansion I do, I just feel some things could have been fleshed out more..like the rebuilding, repairing of the keep, seems to me that in NWN2 you had the same options, only it was more visible and more evident..other than coughing up 80 gold.
The characters do seem more distant than in Origins, it seems that you get disapprovals from some ..such as Oghren for things that you have no influence with.....you can go back and reload the chat, and either get no reaction (approval) or disapproval.
I am guessing they wanted to make gaining approval harder this time around, but some of it makes no sense at all...for instance, at the chantry.
Two party members were NOT with me, yet when I handed in quests there, I got disapproval from Velanna, Nathanial..and Anders (he was in my party) ......hardly fair right? If you don't take them along specifically because you know they will disapprove, then if it happens anyways, they have become psychic and know your every move and action? ^^

One thing i noticed a big difference in AWAKENINGS is the amount of money you get from either the quests or picking up from the dead bodies.
All the exaggeration in DA:O-A is outrageous. Items, Rewards, Damage output, & even companion dialogues. We'll be Captain Greywardens or Super Wardens come the next expansion for DA:O. Oh maybe we need the ability fly as all the Griffons are extinct?!?!

This sums up my feelings as well.Billygaryf wrote...
Hi everyone,
although I'm a big fan of bioware games thus far, I can't help but confess that I am a bit dissapointed with awakening. That is not surprising considering all great games (with the exception of BG 1 imho) are very difficult to expand and make a sequel more succesfull compared to the original.
I have a tendency to replay many many times a game I trully like. Unfortunately I did not find awakening as compeling as origins.
Allow me to agree with some people expressing negative comments about the duration of awakening. Indeed it was too short and left me with the feeling that it had nothing to do with origins regarding the story and atmosphere. The V.O. isn't half as good as origins, the lack of interaction with the party members at will, as well as the limitation of the activities regarding Vigils Keep left a bitter taste.
Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps I was expecting something like the prelude to Dragon Age 2, but it doesn't change the fact that the overal experience felt like it was rushed and allow me to say "incomplete".
I would have expected at least one new origin, many things to do in the keep conserning its functionality (just remember half the things you could do in nwn 2 at crossroads keep, assign seargents, recruit soldiers, keep your land safe etc ) and of course every new feature introduced with the expansion to be included in the original game as well. But I really did not like awakening leaving me with the feeling it was almost a mod instead of an expansion of Dragon Age.
Last but not least, allow me my geek request....Please make some capes!!
Best regards to everyone.
I think the party interactions are what hurt the game the most, considering how interesting some of them could be. Nathniel could've been one of the most complex characters in DAO/A combined but there's just not much dialogue there. And I'm not even getting started on Mhairi :/
My first playthrough clocked in at 14hrs exactly, without skipping side quests. Meh.

I don't understand some of the negative comments. I got 15 hours on my first complete playthrough and only experienced one minor bug where the end scene played twice before rolling the credits (nothing game breaking). Enjoyed the storyline, enjoyed the combat and the new abilities. Thought it was an improvement on Dragon Age all around and a fun campaign. Nice to see a stronger villian presence as well.
The lack of romances didn't bother me at all. Though I confess having a few more conversations with party members might have been nice, however, there was enough party banter to make up for it, and most of it was hilarious. Good job overall, I say.
Also, Oghren is my favourite character in the series. I hope he returns in Dragon Age 2.

Starting with the negative, it's very buggy. First time I went to Amarantine, I wasn't long inside the gates, before I suddenly appeared apparently on top of the city somewhere and was immediately told 'hey you're not city guards' or something like that and either got booted back down to a street I hadn't been on, or could do nothing more than exit via a door to that street. I can't even get back to that location by choice as I think it's behind a locked door so maker knows how I got there in the first place. Most of my annoying bugs were in Amaranthine actually. I couldn't interact with the third mumbling mage unless I went through the door to the battlements he went through (first time I left him go and found him by coming around the long way as I was already heading somewhere). Also regular graphical glitches. None of the bugs so far have been game breakers or forced me to reload. I used the mod to take the DLC items with me, but would have been quite disappointed if I couldn't.
Now for the positives. I love the new locations and find almost all of them more interesting to explore than those in DA:O. I've been very surprised by that. It seems a lot of time went into their design as not only are they beautiful to look at but there's a less obvious and arguably more realistic path to follow in many situations and it just makes the exploring more fun. I'm loving the companions so far as well. Anders is what Alistair should have been, ie a wise ass that's funny but not whiney. Oghren didn't get much time from me originally, but I find him largely amusing this time around, which must be due to my low brow SOH. Nathanial is a very intriguing character, although I'm starting to think I won't have him in my active party much going forward for tactical reasons. Just met Velanna and I'm enjoying Anders' attempts to chat her up. I get the impression there are still a few more companions to come. I have to admit I didn't really find too much interest in most of the original companions other than Dog (being a dog lover, although wish there was more interaction with him) and Shale who was fantastic, (although I'm spending more time with Sten in my second playthrough and he's not bad so far), so I'm not missing them at all for the most part.
I've read many opinions about the new dialogue system and am lost as to what the discussion is about. I've not noticed any difference other than I can't talk to the companions while out on quests. This is mostly a positive for me as due to my preference in right clicking to move, I was constantly starting a dialogue unintentially when I would accidentally right click a companion instead of open space. I'm happier keeping the chat to Vigil's keep to be honest. DA:A also has the best passive conversation I've overheard so far. In the bar in Amaranthine, there were two drunk patrons who started the topic of who would win a fight between the Andraste and the Archdemon. I had to stop a listen to that comedy gold, which is not something I do for most normal conversation.
As for the price, the consoles are really getting ripped off, but the PC is closer to an acceptable level. I paid 23 euro on the high street, and that's just about acceptable for me, as would have been the 18 euro I could have paid online (I didn't want to wait the extra week for delivery). I had worried that I'd be getting about 12-15 hrs of play time, but I'm into that time frame already with a lot seemingly still to come, and I haven't even gone near runecrafting yet. I think it will turn out to be about a quarter or less of Origins playtime for me, which when you consider I paid 35 euro for, isn't the best ratio in the world in terms of value, but I guess you have to say that DA:O was exceptional value whereas DA:O is just good value for money. I certainly don't feel ripped off, and would gladly pay the same for a comparable expansion in the future.
I'd have given Origins 9.5 out of 10, and while I can't rate Awakening properly yet, I'd rate my experience at 8.5 out of 10 so far, with half a point deducted for the number of bugs. I had expected to give it a 7 or 7.5 so this is a pleasant surprise unless my experience goes rapidly downhill from here.

Admittedly, I have not yet played through completion yet. At approx 12 hours solid gaming time, I figure I may be somewhere around half-way through. How some people claim they finished in 8 hours or so is totally beyond me.
I'm taking my time "smelling the roses" by inspecting every inch of this wonderful fantasy world, checking out every single side-quest I come across, and constantly making sure my team has the very best equipment I can afford or that I get my hands on.
I imagine I'll probably come in at 24+ hours by the time I'm done with this first pass. Then I'll probably play through again before I begin taking a look at how I can import Awakening specializations, spells and talents, and other aspects into Origins for various custom mods I have in mind.
I've played Origins at least half a dozen times, and this expansion is adding great potential for my own "expansions".

For those finding it too easy/ short/ not reflective of their Origins choices/ might I suggest a Orlesian Warden playthrough. Starting at level 18 with a smattering of items is a whole different game than coming into it with a well-stocked lvl. 22 Nug-Stomper/ Name-Taker.
