Hello there :) I hope I'm in the right place for this question. You see, I'm all kinds of stuck on a quest in Denerim (sp) where I have to kill some Blood Mages.

I'm doing a chanter's quest to find someone, found him and am now in an abandoned house fighting mercs and blood mages. Trouble is, this quest is way to hard. I find myself dying frequently along with most of my companions, leaving Morrigan to finish each fight, as for some reason, she is the most powerful party member.

What am I doing wrong? I play a Shield Warrior yet can't take many hits at all. I thought I was supposed to be a tank?

Also, is it possible that my party tactics are wrong? I have the elf assassin (can't remember his name), Morrigan and Allistair.

Any help advice would be good.

This quest is hard, make no mistake. At least you have someone surviving, I've had many a party completely wiped out. The biggest problems are the mages. You may be dealing with two or even three mages in any given confrontation. Your best bet is to move slowly and try to pull as many enemies as possible away from big groups so that you're only dealing with a couple at a time. See if you've got any gear that will provide you with resistances -- rings, amulets, armor, whatever. Also, check your tactics. You may want to set things up so that everyone attacks the same target you do. Personally, I prefer not to do this, but sometimes it just makes things easier. At the very least, try to stay in a fairly tight group. Don't you go running across the room to attack someone, stick with your party. Zevran (elf assassin) is amazingly effective in combat, so with you and Alistair tanking, you've got a pretty good party. Oh, do make sure you have a tactic set so that everyone uses a health poultice if his/her health is <50%. Also, don't forget that old standby -- you can always lower the difficulty setting for this quest and then raise it again when you're done. Good luck!

Thanks for the help. As for tanking, it doesn't seem to be working. Both Alistair and I are normally the first to fall. The problem is that this final fight starts with a cutscene so I can't position my party outside the door to bottleneck the enemies. Also, I'm out of health potions. Is it possible to go back to the market, restock then return? Or will I have to fight my way through the house again?

Bring wynne, set her well back, and have her heal her geriatric ass off. Close with the mages as quickly as you can, leave the mercs til last. Regardless of the hits they're getting on you, it's nothing to what those blood mages can do at range, hit them quick and hard and they'll go down.

If it's the mission I'm thinking of, some of those mages are support specced, so you may find it actually easier if you bumrush them first, even though you find yourself in the thick of it after, as the mercs now aren't being buffed from the mages at the end of the room.

Remember the blurb on the case... Kill that magic user first!

Edit: You may be able to exit the house the way you came in. As enemies don't respawn you should be able to just run straight back.

Who's Wynne? I only have a few party members at the moment. Have I done something wrong?

No, it just means that you haven't done the Broken Circle quest yet. You pick up Wynne when you do that quest at the Circle of Magi. I feel your pain at being out of potions. If you can get back out the way you came in -- and I'm with Timmibal in thinking that you can -- go stock up and then head back in. One thing I do like about Dragon Age is that enemies don't respawn. If you clear an area, it stays cleared.

I had the same problem my first run through this. My party and I got our butts kicked and wiped out. I decided to do this quest later in the game after I completed the Broken Circle quest and Urn of Sacred Ashes. By then my team and I had better weapons, armor and were more powerful. (I had Wynne at this time but have never used her here) This is how I handle it especially the mages:

1). As soon as you can level up Morrigan give her the Glyph of Paralysis(or any spell that incapitates any ranged attack) and set it as your first tactic to any ranged or magical attack. This will paralyze the mages or archers and I think you can set up the same tactic again in the second slot and use one of her offensive spells such as flame blast or whatever you have. Tempest spell is great for ranged magic and archer attackers especially if the are in groups.

2) If you have Zevran set his tactics to include the stealth option and assasin.  He can sneak in and take out the archers or mages if you want to tag team him with morrigan or he can take out any attacking for visible rogue.

3) Keep yourself and another on the other enemies. If you can do it with Warrior status, get Mastered up in poisonmaking. You can make bombs, weapons coatings and other lethal items that can used in tightquarters. Two important poison that really help are Magebane and Soldiers Bane. They weaken these type of characters whether human or not. You can also buy these at various merchants too.  I play a rogue and these items have saved us in many of tight battles with powerful mages or warriors.

4). If you are playing a tank with Alistair, when I did my first game I did a lot of shield bashing the hell out of enemies. You only seem to get so many ways to strike with your sword unless you go rogue and shieldbashing saved our butts a number of times again.

And as stated in one post, make sure you get a good supply of lyrium and health poulstices for healing. I keep those in my #3 slot in my tactics in tough battles.

Good luck!

Yes, this is a hard fight and even after going through it multiple times I still dread it ;)

Good advice from previous posters, don't forget you can equip Zevran with a bow and have him attack from stealth. In fact, see if you have any of Andraste's arrows as that will stop spell casting. I would also see if you can get some megabane for your swordsman as this interrupts spell casting as well. If you have Holy Smite be prepared to have your warriors use it, if not, try freeze or shock bombs.
At the last battle, make sure your party is protected with potions spirit, ice and fire salves, etc. It's pain to pause every minute but it does help.
Have fun!

Thanks for the help and tips, folks. I left the blood mages and did the Sacred Ashes quest, returned and kicked magi butt without breaking a sweat! You guys rock!

Quick question, on the Ashes quest I met a dragon. I tried to fight it but couldn't win so reloaded and didn't bang the gong. Should I have killed it or is it ok to leave it alive?

Just leave it alive and it is harder than hell to beat early in the game. It won't bother you at all before or after you are done with the temple. If you choose to kill Kolgrim in the caves and not help him you still won't be bothered by it. Also my advice is if you decide to kill the dragon wait until much later in the game when everyone is armored up and you have Duncan's Dagger from Ostagar. Which has +10 dragon damage power.

If you want to beat the dragon here is how to do it. Or at least for me it worked as I found out from defeating Flemeth:

Playing a rogue I always took at least 2 tanks be it Alistair, Oghren or Shale, myself and Wynne. You can set Shale's tactics to consistantly pummel and barrage the dragon with rocks or heavy damge abilities. Alistair or Oghren set them to constantly use shields and sword strike or two handed striking tactics. Keep a large amount of health poulstices on hand and put at your #2 or 3 slot for your tanks so you don't have to worry about quick heal.

For Wynne use her stamina regeneration and maybe a bit of health regeneration. A bit off offense spells work well to and don't forget to put Lyrium potions and health poulstices for her too.

This leaves you to be able to focus on yourself whatever your character is. I am a rogue so focus on lots of backstabbing, dual weapons tactics and all my poison stock I have. Be it bombs or weapon coatings. I can quick heal if necessary and not worry about the rest of my part.

.Just remember to check in on everyone during the course of the battle to make sure folks doing okay. Good luck!

You could always become a templar and get the knight commanders plate and spell ward and etc.

Tip for fighting the High Dragon on the mountain: bring Morrigan and have her cast her freezing spell Cone of Cold on the dragon as often as the cooldown lets you. It paralyzes the thing and makes this fight a breeze. I once lost all three members of my party EXCEPT Morrigand she managed to solo kill it by chugging health/mana potions and spamming this spell and shooting it with her staff. That was an amazing kill!

Good call, Morigan is easily the most powerful member of my party at this time. Except when she shape shifts, then she doesn't seem as strong. Actually, I tried adjusting her tactics for when she is in a different form but the tactics screen only show her human abilities.
