I don't know when it got added to Batman's repertoire that he's a genius, but I do think Batman has become something of a mockery of himself. Why does he have to be the smartest man and the best martial arts fighter and the world's greatest detective and the most brilliant tactician...

I think he was far cooler when he was more human - when he was a highly skilled fighter who used fear and keen detective skills to stop criminals. This uber-Batman of late really turns me off.

Personal preference, I know.

Batman isn't the smartest man in the world, or the best detective or inventor(well maybe), etc. He's one of the best in a lot of fields and he's aware of his limitations, that's why he's great.
60's batman almost killed batman off.
Night Thrasher was a Batman 'homage' but he made more sense because he wore head to toe armor.
Aquaman has super strength and can control fish... Also he has an army.
Matter Eater Lad disarmed a villain by eating her giant eyeball death ray thing.

What about Matter Eater Lad? He could eat anything (but didn't eat people).

Matter-Eating Lad is great because he CAN eat anything.  Hey look there's a doomsday device, let's get ME-Lad to eat it (which he did one time and it drove him insane)  Worried about that pool of toxic waste, just get ME-Lad to eat it.  Problem solved.  He's a great hero because his super-power is unique.  Do we really need another hero is super-strong,  super agile or has enhanced healing.  Those guys are a dime a dozen while ME-Lad is one of a kind.

I don;t remember him eating a doomsday device, but then again I haven;t read everything.  Was it like, a really small doomsday device?  It isn't like he has a giant mouth or anything.  As for that toxic waste....that is why the Legion had Chemical King!

The Controllers (I'm not sure if it's been retconned again, but I believe they are Oans who left to create the Manhunters - but they get Crisis'd so often - last I saw they were after the Orange Power Battery) created the Miracle Machine, an indestructible device that was more or less like Marvel's Cosmic Cube in that it could restructure reality based on the user's wishes.
Matter-Eater Lad devoured the device thus saving the galaxy from Brainiac 5's creation Omega in Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes issue #251, circa the late 1970's.

Pretty cool story for the time.

My apologies on correcting you, but Batman is a super-genius in the comics and has been for some time.  We could hash out arguments and cite references to individual stories or what not, but why not go to as authoritative a source as we can -
and no, not Wikipedia as I know people will trash me using that -

the "official" DC wikia - http://dc.wikia.com/...n_(Bruce_Wayne)

Amongst the long list of things Bruce Wayne is "nearly the best at" - there's this tidbit:

Genius-Level Intellect:
(IQ 192 [42])
Batman is a brilliant, virtually peerless, detective, strategist, scientist [43], tactician, and commander; he is widely regarded as one of the keenest analytical minds [44] on the planet. Given his lack of superpowers, he often uses cunning and planning to outwit his foes, rather than simply "out-fighting" them.

  • Polymath: He has studied Biology, Technology, Mathematics, Physics, Mythology, Geography, & History.[citation needed] Gained degrees in Criminal Science, Forensics, Computer Science, Chemistry and Engineering by the time he was 21.[citation needed] He has mastered Diverse Environmental Training, Security Systems, and illusion/sleight of hand by the time he was 23.[citation needed] He gained even more degrees in Biology, Physics, Advanced Chemistry, and Technology by the time he was 25.[citation needed] He has learned Forensic, Medical Sciences, Expanded Computer and Engineering Sciences,[original research?] and Expanded Device Pool, use of personal powered armor and system, database creation on underworld crime bosses, rogue's gallery foes and other supers; improved material sciences for body armor and micro-machinery by the time he was 26.[citation needed] Has also learned Advanced New Development in Forensic and Medical Sciences.[citation needed]
  • Master Detective:
He is widely considered as the World's Greatest Detective, capable of observation, forensic investigation, and inductive and deductive reasoning of the highest caliber. Human intuition is an unlearnable trait and one of Batman's most effective tools. Given any mystery, he can arrive at any conclusions with a fraction of the data.[original research?]
  • Multi-lingual:
He is able to speak Spanish, French, Latin, German, Japanese, English,
Russian, Cantonese, Mandarin, and possibly more depending on what DC
feels like makin up at the time.[citation needed]
  • Master Tactician and
    Strategist
: He commonly utilizes cunning tactics to outwit his foes. He is an excellent leader and at times commands the Justice League and the Outsiders.
  • Escapologist: He has
been described as second only to Mister Miracle as an escape artist.[citation needed] He has been seen
escaping from a posey straitjacket in less than 52 seconds, and remarked afterwards that the time was way too slow for him.[citation needed]

You can dispute the DC wikia I guess, too, but seriously this has been established in multiple comics.  I know that the current Mr. Terrific has said that "it's a toss-up" as to who's smarter, him or Batman, and Mr. Terrific's thing is being perfect at all things.

I just thought of a really, really sub par superhero.:

Dogwelder, from he "Hitman" series by Garth Ennis.

Just looking at his name you might think...wtf...is this a dog that welds? That would be silly.

Dogwelder is, of course, a guy welding dead dogs to the faces of bad guys.

I wish I was making that up.
