I guess him being a love/hate character is what Bioware wanted. Eliciting a re-action is better than having no one care about him after they put so much work into him.

That might just be the most ignorant description of Oghren I've ever read...Gerudan wrote...
Oghren is just not good designed in my opinion.
He is a drunken dwarf how likes to harass women.
There, in ten words I said everything there is to know about his character. which makes him about as deep as a layer of Gold leaf.

You can write a short description about every character. This doesn't mean, that they are shallow.Gerudan wrote...

Not without leaving things out, but about Ohgren in Awakening there seems to be not much more one can say.
I can understand that there are some DA:O characters who couldn't be group members in the expansion like Morrigan or Alistair, but why choose Oghren the most annoying and most boring of the remaining?
The only thing that would make this character interesting for me would be the ability to cure him from his drinking problem and to get to know, why he has it in the first place.

Look guys if you don't like him just tell him get lost. If you like him bring him along. It isn't like he is forced into the group after the initial encounter anyway.

Shale is actually funny, and unique.
Oghren is basically "Look at me I'm drunk and a pevert! Har har har!"

If you want to make a vulgar beer drinking lout then really go to town and make one.
He is a pale imitation of a vulgar beer drinking lout. He should have been a pathetic stinking retch half the time and a high on alcohol inappropriate buffoon the next who alienated himself from all but the dregs of society and caused as many problems as his hammer solved.
Worst character in DAO and not a fan favourite at all.
Having said that if I am in a party where I teach someone the meaning of friendship again I am going scream.

This. In my warrior-playthrough I went to Orzamar with level 12 or so, so I got him "early" in the game (well, way more early then in the usual playthrough-style) and I really liked him back then and had him in party all the time. In DA:A he is just annoying.

If you hate him tell him "No" when he says he wants to be a GW. After a couple attempts at playing and getting really sick and tired of his deadbeat dad, alcoholic BS I told him no. Have never regretted it. As a tank he sucks majorly (my DPS warrior does better). Plus he turned the Joining into a stupid joke.

Yea i recognized that also that he sucks as tank xD,in my playthrough justice was the tank.

Could have been much worse. At least Ohgren doesn't disaprove (-10) of everything good under the sun, unlike a certain scantily clad witch who's in need of a good slap. Of all the characters I would have prefered Alistair to help out again.
However if that happened i'd have no one to give all this alcohol I pick up to.

Character-wise, I think he's come more to terms with himself after struggling with depression and trying to start anew in Origins. And for the deadbeat dad thing, if you don't like it, change it! It's within your power to change him through dialogue and his personal quest. I don't see what's so hard with that, since all you really have to do is just feed him alcohol to get him open up.

I agree. Here are two constructive suggestions to the good folk at Bioware regarding Oghren...
1) Please, please Bioware, if you choose to bring back a companion character for the next installment of Dragon Age - choose somebody, anybody but Oghren.
2) And if you feel you can't find it in your hearts to take up suggestion #1 and feel you must bring Oghren back - then please, please, please give players the option to not recruit him or get rid of him straight away as you have done with some of the other characters. At least that way the people who enjoy Oghren's adolescant antics can do so, while the rest of us can give a big sigh of relief as we close that particular chapter in the Dragon Age saga...

The "he isn't a good tank" argument doesn't cut it in my opinion. Main reason: Respec Manual. Second reason? He gets the same amount of points to spend as Justice considering both are the same level.

Unfortuneately compared to my DPS warrior (DPS mind you NOT tank) neither Oghren nor Justice cut the mustard. Justice was just a better tank than Oghren in general cause that was how he was specced out. Neither came close to Alistair who was almost unkillable in my game. I KNOW how to spec out a tank. Oghren was too brittle to take a hit. Plus I hated his personality where I found Justice a lot more tolerable. It was more a matter of who I preferred to have with me more than who was the better tank. Yes I know I could have respecced him with a manual but I didn't want to go through the hassle of having Oghren in my group with the way he was acting anyway so when I got the opportunity to cut him loose I did.
Plus I couldn't get his approval high enough to change him. All his gifts started at +6 for me and I couldn't get him past 60 or so the first time I tried running with him. I DID try but I just got tired of his middle aged crisis BS.
If you liked him, then thats great, more fun for you. For me I didn't like him and I let him go off with Alistair to deal with whatever kingly thing Al was doing. That's the best thing about this game, all the different choices you can make and no two people have to play the same game the same way.

I'm really speaking about Oghren's tanking ability and his character in two different categories here instead of lumping them together. My words aren't really targetting a specific individual so there was really no need for you to explain yourself since I know everyone's entitled to their opinions, as irrational as they might be (again, not specifically you, since there are people who don't list their reasons). I personally found Oghren to be on the same level as Alistair or really, any other warrior in terms of tanking (he would NOT go down against the Queen of Blackmarsh but that's with elixir of grounding and stormchaster set). I'm not dishing out accusations as well either, about whether or not you know how to spec tanks and whatnot. And I'm guessing that the reason why your character outshone the others is because it's YOUR character. You control him/her more than you would your party members, not to mention the AI is just plain... dumb and unreliable, even when you set the tactics.
In regards to his character, I found he approved of my honesty, yet I coddled him more than I should have (oh hey, using a word I picked up from Connor). And surprisingly, it's not alcohol which garners the most approval from him. If I do have to levy a criticism at his character, it'd be the fact that his humor seems to be more forced but other than that... he's fine by me. Surprisingly, it's Velanna and Justice who irk me slightly.

'Hate' is a strong word. "Gets left in the keep permanently' sums it up for me.
