The Hate Oghren thread

You would have to be born into the kind of life where abusive drunk people are only a "story", in order to derive any pleasure from this character.
It screams "I was written by a middle-class programmer"... I think Mary would last five seconds with someone like this in real life. If she bumped into Oghren in a dark alley, I wonder how funny she would find it.
A friend of mine walked out of the room when it was playing because she disagreed so much with the character.
"Only a stupid male could think that **** is funny" she said.
"It was written by a woman" I replied.
"Oh... that is... sad"
As someone else pointed out in another thread, does bioware believe that sexual harrassment is funny?

*sigh
How typical.
Having an opinion that is different from your own is not trolling kiddo. Gamers seem to cry this a lot when some dislikes something they love a little too passionately.
I love Leliana's character A LOT, but you don't see me raging on the topics about her that express their utter dislike and intense hatred for her, do you? No, because I can turn my head and look the other way. Not everyone is going to like every character.
Now, to being back on topic... yes Oghren is a pretty retarded, boring, flat character. I like his voice actor though... He's the voice of Wolverine in the new series and some other sexy anime characters if I'm not mistaken.

Also I found out about Oghren Disapproves -5 in my playthrough, good thing I could keep him neutral the entire game while even getting that murderer Velanna's approve fairly high
I did find the whole convo about the pony funny because he appeared to be tripping balls

That particular writer doesn't appear to remember half the dialog she writes anyway, based on arguments she's made on the subject of the Warden treaties and how they're the ONLY reason the various factions help you at all.
Think of that what you will.

I hate oghren. He was by far the worst companion, if not worst NPC overall in origins. Why put him in awakening.
Not only does oghren promote the delinquency of minors by encouraging the consumption of alcoholic beverages, he is gross and boring and ugly.
Wouldn't everyone have much rather had Dog return? Dog was awesome, and he requires no voicework.
Or, what about sandal or ruck?? Seriously, Sandal companion would have given the awakening team legendary status and lifted the reviews from 8's to the 9's easily.
How does he promote the delinquency of minors? I never got a scene where he grabbed a kid on the street and said "hey drink this" did you?
He's boring and ugly? Now that's just funny, he's anything but boring, and dwarves aren't exactly known for their great looks to begin with. Also do you find Ruck and his hunched back attractive? I can see how one finds Sandal not boring, I mean he has the wittiest of conversations "ENCHANTMENT!" oh and "ENCHANTMENT" not to mention my favorite "ENCHANTMENT" forget that neither of those choices you put out there were party members though.
wether or not he was gross is pretty much dependant on ones point of view.

Yes, he's goofy comic relief, but I don't take him too seriously. He can be a little over the top at times, though, even I admit.

I'm just annoyed that while I had 100 approval with the drunk in Origins, I had to start ALL OVER with him again in Awakenings. This sucks. Especially since he reacts so differently to conversation in this expansion (seriously, he suddenly clutches his pearls over *teasing* now?) that he might as well be a different character.
I wish I had my dog.
This.
Seriously, playing Awakening while still impressed by how much ME2 remembers every tiny decision you made in ME1 makes you wonder why they can't even import a simple approval/disapproval number.
And why in the name of the Maker they choose Oghren of all people I can't even begin to understand. Sure, some of the companions hint at leaving on their own errands at the end of Origins, but I'm fairly sure that your dog was not among them, for obvious reasons.
I *so* miss my dog. I finished Awakening yesterday and right now I rather feel like starting another Origins playthrough than part one of my old chars from her faithful Marbari by forcing her into Awakening.

You can argue wether or not this thread is flame bait, but the person that bites and start flaming back is just as guilty and childish as the original troll. And this thread isn't trolling; trolling would be posting "I hate Ogrhen" in a "I love Ogren thread".
Anyway; my biggest problem with Ogren in Awakening isn't the annoying "I'm a one dimensional dwarven stereotype, hur hur" (amusing because even though Ogren is the stereotype, BioWare managed to avoid it for pretty much all the other dwarves) that is Ogren per see; it's whatever genius decided on the line "the return of an old favorite".
You know what happens when the marketing lines are ambiguous? The fans start imagining things like "oh, I'll bet it's Leliana, I loved her in Origins", or "Sten! Yes, who doesn't love the stoic awesomness that is our pet-Qunari!"; only to get their hopes crushed when it's revealed to be Ogren. If BioWare had said from the beginning the dwarf is coming back, there would have been far less fan-rage, I think.
Well said. I'm reminded of Bungie's marketing push for Halo 2 prior to release. At launch everyone who was paying attention was convinced the game was something that it simply wasn't and their hopes came crashing down when the realization struck them. Seeing ogren in awakening made me want to vomit. I agree, dog would of been better.

I'm currently listening to my husband starting another playthrough of Origins on the other computer (he's at Ostagar atm), and the voices wafting over trigger all kinds of emotionally-laden memories ... sadness, hilarity, fondness for my favourites. When I think of my recent playthrough of Awakening, there's little emotional connection, just, well, meh.
Same with Oghren - he was kinda okay as a char in Origins imho (more so than in Awakening), but I never much bonded with him. But Dog, oh my, not only was he as well-formed a char as a, well, dog can be (some of the party banter was hysterical), he was a party member both you and your character could really learn to love. To have him ripped from my char's life without reason or even a word as to why or his whereabouts was totally unneccessary.

Well, this is understandable. Then maybe it's just me, because I've never felt a stronger connection to dog than to the other characters (including Oghren). In the last third of Origins, I rarely brought him with the party. Now I'm not saying that I didn't like Dog (that was his name in gameCayaLianel wrote...

Thinking about it, didn't someone at the beginning of Origins said that mabari choose their master for a life, and they never leave him/her? So yeah, it's strange that Dog is not with us (at least if we export our character from Origins).CayaLianel wrote...

I wasn't too fond of him in DA:O but he was fantastic in DA:A. Promote the delinquency of minors? There's a lot of killing in this game and a lot of opportunities to step on people to get what you want. If you're complaining about Oghren's influence on gamers, you should be complaining about it as a whole (oh, yay, more complaining!) instead of singling one thing out to suit your needs. Oghren, Leliana, Morrigan, and Alistair are all different characters. You can't really compare them except for the standard of writing and how deep the character is, which is pretty much on par. I hope you're not so shallow as to take this from your practices in the real world, comparing other people with your skewed subjective views of what makes a person.LaughingDragon wrote...

Besides, if you hate him so much and he disgusts you so much, then the writers did their job. It is part of his character. It's what makes him interesting and makes interactions with other characters amusing.
I'd rather have Oghren than Dog.
Sandal and Ruck? You remind me of those guys in the ME boards who seem to go looking for some minor character to start a thread about and hype. Sandal and Ruck! Then I want Cullen! Then the Beastmaster from Ostagar! His command of Mabari hounds would make him awesome!

Kiddo, of course it's a game. And I don't play games I don't feel any emotional attachment to. Same as with books or TV series.
Feel free to enjoy games as you see fit, and I will do as I see fit. Have fun with Oghren, but I'd much rather have had Dog along.

Grandma, I said "too" emotionally attached. People crying when their
favorite character dies....or getting turned on while flirting with a
female character...oh boy. Those people need help.
Are you one of those people grandma?

Says the kid coming here and complaining about people who are complaining.
And why play a game if not to get involved with the characters? If a game doesn't have me emotionally attached I don't waste my time playing the piece of ****. People who don't play to experience that are generally the prepubescent kids who will greedily lap up any bad, overrated first person shooter that falls into their cheetoh stained fingers.

What am I making you see how pathetic you all must be getting so attached to a friggin' game character. They're not real. You're not having a real relationship. Go outside meet REAL people m'kay?
