My FemShep in ME1 turned out well, to the point that all of her Renegade scars in the sequel made her look ridiculous. I turned out to be one of those shallow people that actually dropped 50k platinum on the medical bay upgrade to fix the glowing eyes...

When I create my Male Shep for Insanity, I'm debating going the custom route. I went with the default look on my first play and I think the biggest challenge will be making sure the voice matches.

If you get stuck with ugly custom shepherds, try modeling it on yourself. Worked for me.

Unless you're hideously ugly with eyes too close together or far apart.

Default male shep - can't get a custom one to look decent. for the female shep it's always custom, looks much better than the default.

Me.
I recruit Mordin asap, and drop 50k into the med bay research right away.
Except on engineers. The research discount really tempts me to wait until I can get it on the cheap.

I used one of the default male Sheps in ME and imported that, think it was the one who looks quite like Sheploo but has a wider head and squints a lot. At least I'm assuming there were multiple presets...can't actually remember, but he looks to normal to be one of my creations. I might try making a custom one based on some characters from novels, but my attempts at making custom faces in other games (the minger I made in Oblivion has to be seen to be believed) suggests he or she'll look pretty hideous. Dunno whether to do it in ME and play through and import, or just start in ME2 (kinda like to have my choices for ME2 not the default though).

I think this thread reveals how difficult it is to see what your customized Shep will look like in-game while you're still at the customize menu. The lighting doesn't help. What would really help us out here is something like an expressions slider or a talk button so that we could get a better idea of our results before going into the game, being disappointed, and then having to restart all over again?

And since Shep is no longer Alliance, can we finally get some male hair styles that don't look like US marines conquered humanity? I'm still recovering from the news that the US military morphed into the Alliance, keeping all of its idiocracies. Thank the galaxy for Cerberus and humans with brains!

I used the default MaleShep for Paragon play and a custom FemShep for Renegade in ME1. When I ported these into ME2, I left default MaleShep alone and took advantage of the appearance editor to give FemShep a new hairstyle, but that was about it. When I decided to start ME2 over again to try out a different class and a Paragon FemShep, I created a completely different character. I had to quit playing her. It was just too jarring hearing the same voice while looking at a different character. It just seemed wrong. I had to start over and create a new character that while not identical to the original, wasn't radically different either. It's more like Cerberus tweaked the appearance of the "original" rather than resleeved her in a different body. I still haven't decided what to do on my next playthrough. At this point, I'm not even sure if I can accept her with a different hair color and makeup.

Custom for me. When there is an option to create your own character, I do my best to make my characters to look like me.

I didn't bother to custom until my 2nd playthrough of ME2 and now I might never go back. I tried playing the default Shep again in another career track and it just didn't seem right anymore. I felt disconnected to the character. My custom Shep doesn't look like me but I think I made a pretty decent looking character. Initially the nose didn't seem right to me so I created another playthrough and changed the nose and then that seemed off so I scrapped it and went back to the original one. Also customized a female Shep too. But she gets less play time as I now have a ton of research to do an almost no resources...

I don't think I'll ever go back to the default Shep now. I feel much more connected to my custom ones.

My main (first playthrough) Shepard is the default male Shep. First female character has been custom, because the default is not that great. It's like they knew "everyone" would want to create their own female anyway and didn't much care.

My custom males tend to bother me a bit too. Might look OK in the editor, but  then in-game you might get this:

It takes quite some time to create a Shepard who doesn't look like a weirdo or just plain ugly, but it's worth the effort. In my opinion, the experience of playing the game just gets much more personal. Great decision to allow a change of looks even when importing an old character, though. BIOWARE really did a great job concerning details like that.

My problem with male sheps is they have such a terrible choice of hairstyles.

Here is mine

I like custom shepard because then I can make him look like me! 8D

Ya know who Default Shepard really looks like?  Dutch model Mark Vanderloo.

In all honesty, that's probably my favorite custom Shep screenshot that I've seen ever.

The custom male Shepard has jacked up teeth though :(

They're all dark grey with some weird spot on the front teeth.

This bothers me to no end. The teeth are generally a problem with a lot of the characters - some that are supposed to look attractive also have yellow teeth with shadows so dark they look like a severe case of dental calculus. Yet others look fine, so it seems even weirder.

I prefer custom shepard because I kind of can build the charcter on how I built the person through not only looks but the personal codex. like my adapt whoes earthborn ruthless, she's a bad attituded adapt. my first was a ruthless sole survivor, I plaid her casual where yeah she's been through alot but she winds up with Kaiden. However two my pride and joys are Sheeda and Rasheena who I written stories about I am trying to with how they would react in this universe. Sheeda is usually a good woman who fights evil and help people out but isn't afraid to shoot conrad verner in the foot or headbunt a Krogan or two. Rasheena I play her mainly evil who likes asari but she likes making people like the illusive man mad by blowing up the collector base.
I feel like I have done some decent male shepards like Feirjis and Mickles but I wish they had more variety in skin color because I have still been hoping to make a japanese shepard for quite some time.

He'd make a good actor for Shepard but Shep looks more like the dutch model, only Shep looks more muscular.

I've tried custom, but am not that great an designing a look. I tried creating a Chinese Femshep. She turned out alright, but not great.

I wouldnt make Shepard look like me.. it's bad enough that I have to look at my own ugly mug in the mirror.. :P
