I tried to make my MaleShep look like Bob Peck / Robert Muldoon off of Jurassic Park.

I couldn't make the eyes big enough.

Custom female, straight up. I can't stand the male voice acting, and I like my distinctive, if not gorgeous, Shep.

I'll always prefer my red haired femshep and my gaunt-faced narrow-chinned, red-haired maleshep.

I'm horrible at making male!Sheps. The first three I made looked like asians. Honestly, I like the creator in ME1 better. I made a really good looking one the other day.

I've never gone with the default fem!Shep, but for some reason, all of the ones I customize look like her -_- either that, or they're not very attractive.

As a whole, I'm not good with faces, unfortunately.

You know... I played ME1 with Sheploo and when I imported him to ME2 for my first playthrough, I kept the face. Then I made my first custom Shepard (I'd previously not done it mostly because I usually start to hate whatever I came up with halfway through a game), and now if I load old saves in either game and see Sheploo, he just creeps me out. I really don't know what it is, something's just off.

My custom male is pretty good, but does look a little odd. I've never tried using any of the defaults.

I, unfortunately, played ME2 on a different system than ME1 with no way to get the previous save game back. So, I had to build my custom male (who was, IMO, awesome in ME1) again. I tried to recreate him but I messed up his cheekbones so he looks pretty gaunt and like he'll probably kick the bucket again but this time, from malnutrition.

I tried to recreate myself during ME1 and I liked it, even though the cheeks might look gaunt (or weird) and the lips are kind of thin. The smile in ME2 looks kind of creepy and I love the angry face in some cut scenes (Most notably, the Ilium side mission with the asari commenting on sticking out a century with a man [Blue Rose of Ilium?])

I'll stick with my custom shep, i love it

Custom all the way

I made my custom males to look like myself. which is pretty cool, but I cant get him quite the perfect me, theres not much room for profile skull selection but I always get something, eyes, lips, cheek bones, at least. I wish there was a way we could show our custom shepards....hmm I wonder where do I put that indentity code..?

I think that the default shep has a "natural path" that it feels like he should take through the story, and that as I replay the game i sort of create characters into an intent, and that the decisions are less on my decisions as a player and more the character's decisions through me as a director.

Custom all the way... It adds to that whole "in-game" experience... Although trying to get the cheeks and jaw right is always a challenge. However it always seems t work out for me. Thank you native american ancestors for giving me giant cheekbones XD However, I spent forever trying to decipher which of the four blue eye colors was closest to mine. Although, considering my eyes vary between 3 shades of blue I guess I was screwed from the start.

Only thing is I wish there were more hair type options. They're definitely lacking in hair options for Fem Shep. All the updos look like crap and there's no wavy/curly hair. Kind of lame.

Custom all the way!
I usually try to make the males look like me (though they end up looking different due to limited customization)... Or I make them looking like psychos, or smooth, cold assassin types. But I enjoy crafting femSheps, I've made some pretty good ones, including an almost geeky ginger (yeah, I have a thing for red-heds and geeky girls )

Custom always. I can make him look close to me and I HATE the default Shepard.

Custom. Always, in every game. I like feeling connection with my character.

And come on, I feel like I was 9 again. Playing with Barbies.

Sometimes use default one with a paragonShep. Always use custom ones for Renegade.

I make badass renegade sheps.

In my time in mass effect 1 and 2, i have had a smattering of both custom and default "Sheps", i have built shepards who look like a fat mans ass and have built some which im pretty damn proud of, i have also used the default shepard, which fits shepard pretty well.
However i believe that when i make my own personal shepard i feel more involved with the character, i have created his face and looks, and its nice to see something of my own workings its way through, BUT one of the major cons of having a custom shep you can accidenatly make one ugly SOB.
what do you think, which is better, custom shep or default shep?

I know what you mean by creating a shephard  just the way you want , you feel more involved with the game :wizard:

I posted a simliar thread too this one

Well, being a female and I always use the default male Shepard because he's damn good looking and I've never seen a custom male Shepard compare. Nearly all of the custom males I've seen are ugly and at best average. I've only seen 1 that I thought was attractive.
For female Shepards I always do custom because I tweak her some and change her hair to blond like my own. :-) However, I've never completed a female Shep run-through so yeah... To me it feels really strange to use anyone else as Shepard other than the default male.

This. This is why custom is necessary.

My maleshep may look boring, but at least he doesn't smile like Pope Benedict.

That's just one unfortunate picture. Keep in mind that facial animations are the same for all male/female faces, meaning you could catch any male Shepard face in this type of grimace (it would look more or less awful depending on the face, of course).

I've seen only a handful of custom male Shepards that weren't awful, and none that were good. The default one feels legitimate to me. It's just how I envision Shepard. In games like DA:O I see myself as the main character. In ME, I feel like I am only steering Shepard, who is a person of his (or her) own. That's why I never mess with the custom face in ME whereas I always do so in DA:O.

This.

Also, I think Mark van der Loo is pretty bad ass. Guys such as The Angry One can whine all they want about him being a model but if you look at this video you can't deny he can be pretty bad ass if he wants to.

I like playing as custom male Sheps because i like to make use of the wonderful character creator that is provided by Bioware. Also i worked pretty hard on my custom male and he looks pretty bad ass if i do say so myself.

I haven't been able to make a good looking female Shep so i just go with the default Jennifer Hale model.
