How do you think BioWare is going to explain Ashley/Kaidan surviving the Virmire explosion? Since it's pretty obvious the LIs will return in ME3, I don't think they'll just allow one to show up.

Only one is alive depending on Shep's gender in the default.

They will probably do it through a series of questions like they did in teh shuttle ride.

Gender comes into it if you choose a new game in ME2, and will probably be the same in ME3.

If you're so uncool as to not have a save file from the previous games of course.

Only one is alive regardless of who you romanced.
Edit:  Of course Bioware could ressurect one, but I don't see that happening in ME3.

The only thing those questions determined, was who the human councilor was, and I think even that's only if you import, if you don't you're stuck with Udina. Hopefully ME3 will have something similar where the questions can actually make a difference.
