What is the point of becoming a grey warden?

Why new recruit so we can sense Darkspawn!
Darkspawn? Are those the things that have been ambushing us left right and centre?
*Cough* well yes but..
There must be more to it as we need to increase our numbers for the upcoming battle. We live longer and will be stronger and more experienced by the time another Blight comes around I'll bet?
Well no there is a chance you will die outright and you get lots of bad dreams so you don't sleep well for the rest of your life.
So we really only need a couple of Grey Wardens and the knowledge of how to make more so there is always a couple of them? Pretty much like the two of you in origins. That worked out well and there was an ACTUAL blight going on.
Look just shut up and drink the blood.

If there was some super-duper strength or something then yeah the risk would be worth it. Otherwise you're losing good recruits to what is essentially A FRATERNITY HAZING RITUAL, and those who survive get a handy death sentence.

So we get loads of fame and respect and treated like kings?
Well no, not really, in fact you can save the world, decide the future of kings and be completely forgotten about by tea time. It could be worse though. If you turn out to be on the wrong side you will be remembered for ever.....by having a statue of you removed...which is not dissimilar to being completely forgotten.
Well at least I can build up a fortune in fantastical weapons and armour during my quests!
Only in certain quests I'm afraid. Others don't count. Just don't ask. Just don't. An omnipresent authority figure is meddling in our affairs. They mumbled some apology about how you appeared semi naked as you crossed into the border to Amaranthine and then went back to being vague and mysterious.
...I have to admit that one surprised me. I'm a mage of considerable ability and an armour removal spell could really come in real handy.
It could have been worse, they could have installed a nude mod.
A what!?!

Rogues and bards that prefer the shadows. I mean hell their are plenty of them that threatened the world without even having their name known.Sresla wrote...
In what other career can you save an entire nation and still not have peoples' respect or even have them know who you are?
Wait! I am the only one who has one?[smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/angel.png[/smilie][smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/angel.png[/smilie]Dam Wookie wrote...

Well presumably they'd need Wardens about to sense whether or not the Archdemon is even coming. I don't know what the operational range is on their sensing of it but in reality they'd likely only need to maintain a few at any given time.
I see a bit like a satelite gps system. If you position three wardens at different points around ferelden and compare their signal strength you can transpond the location of a threat. I was wrong, a couple wouldn't work. You need three Grey Wardens. To cover a similar sized planet to earth you would likely require 26 grey Wardens like the GNSS.

How about being immune to the taint? That was a risk in fighting darkspawn other than being outright killed was that you could get infected right?
And is it me or in Awakening did the Grey Wardens seem to lower their standards a bit to join their club and it didn't involve much of a commitment afterwards? I know my mission was to rebuild the Grey Wardens but I got the sense I could walk up to any joe shmoe and ask "Hey man, you wanna be a Grey Warden? Just on the weekends and not during jousting season? Cool, you're in."

They can sense darkspawn, like Jedi with the force, or something.

Immune to the taint? Are you joking? All the other party members seemed as healthy as my guy and Alistair after fighting a truckload of darkspawn.
Except that they shouldnt have been. Do you know what ghouls are?

Remember ruck (I think that is his name.) Down in deep roads, he had drunk darkspawn blood ans I don't think he became so immune to the taint.Behindyounow wrote...

I'm not talking about Duncan. I'm talking about the characters in the expansion like Oghren and Vellana. Not exactly Grey Warden material IMO.

It's actually just one huge pyramid scheme - the Amway of Ferelden.

Posté 21 mars 2010 - 06:07
How so?
Oghren is a great warrior who won many honours in the deep roads fighting darkspawn when our wardens were suckling on mammas teat. Oh, then he helped to take down the Archdemon and stop the blight.
Valena managed to do some serious damage to the entire region.

While letting in Oghren, a rotten drunk, a bunch of Wardens who can't sense Darkspawn to save their grandmothers, and Riorden, an airhead who thinks playing a vigorious game of "ride the Archdemon" is a good idea?
