as a normal person, when you got tainted, go join the Grey Warden to lengthen your life, that is...

Unrealistic. They have a limited supply of Joining material. Remember, you need the blood of an archdemon for this stuff as well as lyrium. You cannot simply give that to the entire world... this is likely why only the best get it as well.

They can sense darkspawn, like Jedi with the
force, or something.

Yeah those Wardens at
Vigil's Keep did such a great job of that.
Not to mention you and
Alistair, your powers of Darkspawn sensing are so great that you don't
sense any danger until they literally pop up in your camp!

The
whole thing reminds me of that MST3k riff on Puma Man, "I'm still not
sensing danger!"

Kind of like the Jedi not being
able to sense Darth Sidious even thought he is right in front of their
noses.

Good analogy.

He's a Sith Lord ,and a
*very* knowledgable one at that. He has techniques to mask his
'signature' probably.

Exposure to Grey Wardens in original campaign: Duncan, a highly respected warrior who balanced diplomacy and badassery. Alistair, the new recruit who was a crybaby but still dutiful, and Riordan who pulled one of the craziest stunts of all time and almost singlehandedly killed the archdemon. You can also throw Commander Dryden/Avernus into that picture and they were both serious and tough characters.

Grey Wardens in Awakening: A perpetual drunk, a burglar (probably the only respectable character), an emo elf girl who can't think rationally under pressure, a deserter, an apostate who doesn't seem to realize he's a grey warden, and....a spirit in the body of an unbearably ugly dead man.

I can understand the need to make interesting characters, but still, it would have been nicer if I felt more like the "Commander of the Grey" instead of "Babysitter of Refugees."

The OP also points out something major, that being that the game imposes this supposed urgency of recruiting wardens to your cause, but in practice the wardens can no longer sense the new darkspawn and are basically just becoming wardens for the sake of being wardens. The original campaign gave the impression that grey wardens were something special, awakening takes that away.

Immune to the taint? Are you joking? All the other party members seemed as healthy as my guy and Alistair after fighting a truckload of darkspawn.

Remember ruck (I think that is his name.) Down in deep roads, he had drunk darkspawn blood ans I don't think he became so immune to the taint.

I thought to become a ghoul/broodmother one had to go further than blood and actually eat Darkspawn flesh. Would explain why the Grey Wardens don't turn into ghouls.

This may just be me and my crazy thinking, but why the hell would you eat them? That is like drinking a cup full of black widow's venom. You just don't do it.

You get all kinds of crazy ****.

Each package includes the following:
50% chance to survive your joining.
30 years left to live.
Nightmares.
The burden of humanity.
Death upon defeating the archdemon.
Immunity against Darkspawn blood.

What else could you possibly ask for?!

Wenches as far as the eye can see?

Don't forget becoming almost sterile! Imagine  being able to make love to all those wenches without the risk of them getting pregnant. Posted Image

If there's no Archdemon about I really don't see the point in the Joining.
If there was some super-duper strength or something then yeah the risk would be worth it. Otherwise you're losing good recruits to what is essentially A FRATERNITY HAZING RITUAL, and those who survive get a handy death sentence.

Agreed. I don't really understand why they don't do the joining at the point it is actually needed. Why cut years of people's life if it isn't in any way a necessary.

I thought the whole point of being a grey warden was to be able to ride gryphons :0

There should have been a Grey Warden talent tree to drive home the benefits.

Something like sense darkspawn -> extra damage to darkspawn -> aura that weakens darkspawn -> extra stamina/mana regen for party

Right now, there is literally nothing that seperates a GW from your average fighter.  Sten/Lel/Zev kill darkspawn just as well as any Grey Warden does.  The only difference is that they don't die when they kill an Archdemon.

Well, neither does the Archdemon, FWIW.

The severe increase in appetite is missing from this list.
