ok, guys after installing the patch it was impossible to play , many crashes to desktop ,after throwing bombs pickpocketing summoning companions using heavy magic etc.

I realized that most of the ppl having this issues were running the game under 64 bits OS ,which demand larger amount of ram and when my game crashed, my memory was 50+ of use I have 4gb, so as most of 32 bits application daorigins.exe cannot handle more than 2gb adresses . So I modified the exe with CFF explorer so It can handle more than 2gb and now the game runs flawless.

I suggest you to make a backup of your .exe and try this fix

EDIT: while fighting the mother the game crashed again but I can throw bombs use blizzard and i wont cause the crash it just crashes randomly

The random crashes are my problem too. I've tried to notice if it was anything in particular, but it's not.

That would make sense, since I'm running 10gb of RAM on a 64-bit OS and haven't experienced any of the random CTD's that everyone is complaining about (*knocks on wood*), aside from a separate instance where I crashed a couple times from repeated use of Mana Clash as a test, but I resolved that issue as well.

Bump

This has vastly improved the crashing issues I've been having, thanks a lot! My crashes were only random crashes not when particular events occurred. After applying the patch, I still crash on occasion but I can play for as much as 2 hours without a crash with autosave on, and with my old settings, not the vastly reduced settings I had been forced to use.

For those of you who don't know how to do the above fix, first backup your daorigins.exe file, it's in the bin_ship folder.

Then, get the Explorer Suite, when you extract it, you will find an application called CFF Explorer. In the same directory there should be a Scripts folder. You'll find one called 4GBPatch. Thats what you want to apply, so double click it to execute and it will open the file browser and ask you to find an exe file to patch. Select daorigins.exe in your bin_ship folder and it will ask if you want to overwrite the file. Select yes, as you will have backed it up and it will save the changes. Then, just try and see if this helped you any.

Only do this if you are on a 64bit system. If you are on steam, I'm not sure if this will work as there is probably some DRM that checks the integrity of the executable. I'm not sure though as I got my copy from Direct2Drive and it seems to work fine.

Hi...I got the Explorer Suite, ran the exe and saw the CFF Explorer application.  I am not however seeing the Scripts folder.  I do see though C:\\Program Files\\NTCore\\Explorer Suite\\Extensions\\CFF Explorer\\UPX Utility and C:\\Program Files\\NTCore\\Explorer Suite\\SDK  as the two other folders.  I don't see any file labeled 4GBPatch.  Did I somehow get an older version of Explorer Suite or where else am I to look?  thanks tons!

I got my version from here:

http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php

The scripts folder is in the Explorer Suite folder or should be. C:\\Program Files\\NTCore\\Explorer Suite\\Scripts for you.

Hmm interesting. I'm using vista 32 and like many others was having the random crash issue. Mostly would totally freeze my computer. No issues before 1.3 for crashing. I re-installed and made sure there were no residual mods and it crashes less often but due to how random the crashes are its really hard for me to know if it is just random luck or if it actually helped. I still do crash but about on a hourly basis instead of a few minutes. I noticed with the patch another thing is when I start the game up it runs flawlessly like before the longer I play and this did happen before the game starts to run a bit choppy especially during cutscenes / talking which is really unusual I have never had a slight amount of lag. Load times seem to get longer as I go too. Anyhow just throwing more info out.

Tried this and it still crashed on the Baroness fight, this time right before she died. Oh well, thanks anyway.

Been running on a 64bit system with no crashes at all but I did modify the shortcut to have -dx9 in it.

You sir, are a genius! I haven't had a single crash since I tried this fix. Also, big thanks to hashemg1990 for the detailed instructions.

All this suggests is that there is another memory leak problem introduced by v1.03 and having more memory available to the game just delays the inevitable until a real solution is found.

Update:

I installed the 4GB patch and still had the same CTD issue, however I also decided to try 3 other things with my daorigins executable and as a result played for the last 2 hours crash free:

1) Run it as administrator
2) Set the compatibility mode to Windows XP service pack 3
3) Force the game to run in dx9 mode

For those that don't know how to do this, just right click on the game's shortcut on your desktop (make one if you don't have one). The target field should read something like "C:\\Program Files\\dragon age\\bin_ship\\daorigins.exe" or the like. at the end of the line add "-dx9", without the quotes. You can change the game to run in XP sp3 compatibility mode under the compatibility tab, just select it from the drop down box. Note: You should only use the -dx9 setting if you're using Vista or Windows7.

Again I'm just saying this worked for me, as I just played for the last 2.5 hours, doing several battles and boss fights without a single CTD. Good luck.

After applying the fix I was able to play for an hour without a single crash (this included Baroness, revenants and Queen of the Blackmarsh fight), the game also runs a lot smoother. Gonna do more testing today. Still many thanks to IC_MCMXCII for starting this thread and to hashemg1990 for detailed instructions! :)

Edit: I was able to play Awakening for 2 more crash-free hours. Unfortunately the fix did not pass Mana Clash/Holy Smite/Cleanse Area heavy test.:( Loaded Recliffe Castle today, set Alistair and Morrigan to spam the spells, and the 6th Mana Clash crashed my game. *Sigh*

Nothing here did it for me, still getting frequent CTD's.

And I paid for this game...

It might work, i had done that before with few games running on Win7 x64 (like X3:Terran Conflict for example, which became unplayable lag after an hour or so). Alternative method (not using the scripts) is to open CFF Explorer, click "open", navigate to daorigins.exe, open it, then go to "file header", then clicking on "click here" next to "characteristics", then check the "app can handle >2gb address space" box, then save the modified exe.
As i said, it may improve (or decrease) overall performance of almost any game running on 64bit OS. But the crashes would, most probably, still be there for other reasons.

I've not crashed yet, almost 2 days straight play, HOWEVER, I am having issues where it seems I am not getting quest rewards, quest givers are not talking to me even with icon over head and in the Architect room I am totally stuck.

Thanks for the help.

I still get some crashes, but stability has definitely improved. I can finally use mana clash without having to cross my fingers and pray.

Just so some other folks know about this: There are at least two fairly simple ways to do the necessary edits to the daorigins.exe executable. The necessary change is in the header of the file, using a batch file/script that was meant to edit Fallout3 (IIRC) or using CFF Explorer. In either case, just [MAKE A COPY FIRST AND THEN] reconfigure the executable to use >2GB of memory.

On Windows XP 32-bit, which I use, there is also a change needed to boot.ini. Google is your friend.

The good news is that if you can live with all the other 1.03/Awakening bugs, then this fixes almost all of the crashes. The bad news is that it doesn't fix any story-related bugs.

Good luck. And @garyjohnreed, you've already figured this out, but....the fix might make it into 1.04 but otherwise there's really no fix other than shutdown/reboot. @jujdred you've likely figured this out too but the things you've described are discussed in detail in other bug-related posts on this board.

What exactly do you have to change in the .exe using CFF Explorer? I see all those numbers and in just looks Greek to me.
