Not the BioWare is above strange plot decisions, but it would certainly require a lot of explaining.
It's more likely that the target of the betrayal wouldn't be Shepard but one of the crewmates, possibly the LI for extra drama.

Kaidan and Ashley are no more likely to betray Shepard than most if not all other squad mates, IMO. Kaidan and Ash still love Shepard if they were LIs. I guess they could betray you if they weren't your romance interests, but I don't see Bioware placing that much emphasis and distinction on whether or not you romanced them
It makes for them to be the betrayers as one of them is guaranteed to survive ME2.

...or they could just help Shepard out against the reapers. They apologize their guts out in an email after Horizon, I doubt they're going to do a 180 and decide they want to kill you. Especially if you ditch Cerberus.RigAudio wrote...

But that was a trap! Remember Kaiden's ultra super cool secret mission that no one wants to tell you... Anderson planned this if he gets shot in the back when you were in lockdown in ME1 if he punched Udina then Udina planned this and is looking for revenge!Collider wrote...

Maybe they'd sell you to the Alliance. Who knows. Just speculating.

I honestly hope Jacob betrays me. It was so amusing seeing him killed in every scenario. Killed by seekers, shot clear in the face, shot in the stomach. All that's left is a dramatic scene, in the airlock, Shepard and Jacob in breather helmets. Shepard shoots him in-between the eyes, and Jacob falls dramatically out into space to be run over by a space garbage collector.RenownedRyan wrote...

I love Tali as much as the next obsessive fan, but if she betrayed me, I would not hesitate to put a bullet in her face.
Don't take it personally. She'd betray everyone else who played too.

I have to admit, it would be pretty damn hilarious seeing Tali or Miranda kick the crap out of Jack after she tries to kill one of them.SimonTheFrog wrote...
Facing the Reaper thread anybody that knows about the thread and knows what Shepard does would be very strange in the head to plan a betrayal.

Fortunately my canon playthough has no romance in ME1. Tali being his one and only.scotty062295 wrote...

I tried to not have a romance in ME1. Apparently, Ash didn't get the memo when I told Liara that all I wanted to be with anyone was friends. <_<

Just because it's inconceivable now that no one (say, Ashley or Kaidan) would betray you, doesn't mean the possibility won't emerge later in Mass Effect 3. All the parameters currently in place could change in that game, depending on what happens. Perhaps something profound changes how one of them views what's going on. Or, going the easier route, one of them ends up, y'know, indoctrinated. You just never know. In short, you can't use the argument that the present situation demands what the future will hold, although it is often a good indicator in video games (for obvious reasons).
Personally though, if I was forced to vote on anyone committing betrayal, it would be Shepard. That is, you make a decision that irrevocably upsets your squadmates, and you end up having to kill all of them, a la Jade Empire.

The Virmire survivor. Reasons:
-The one who survives Virmire automatically survives Mass Effect 2.
-Yes, Liara also survives both games, but she doesn't have her own agenda. She has a clear goal, one which will probably be fulfilled in the upcoming DLC.
-He or she has been with you from the beginning, so more time to become emotionally attached.
-You willingly chose him or her over the other human, making the Virmire survivor that more 'unlikely' to betray you.
-He or she has become the second human Spectre, as subtly indicated in Mass 2, it would provide an interesting link to Saren once Shepard is considered a rogue Specte (we all know it will happen).
I find these ideas really fascinating and right on point. It makes totally sense for the council (by their sometimes torturous logic) to have Shepard declared a rogue and new human Spectre sent to pursue her/him. Kaiden/Ashley would be the perfect person for the job, and the emotional impact of that idea is fantastic, especially if there has been a romance between that character and Shepard.
It's been repeated innumerable times on the boards that people who choose to "cheat" on their ME1 love interests will have to pay a price in ME3 - perhaps the faithful will be able to convince Kaiden/Ash to stop the pursuit and join their squad, but the unfaithful will be forced to fight and kill them.
Hahah, I will be cranky if I had my poor Shepard moon sadly over Kaiden's picture in ME2 only to have him betray her with no chance of reconciliation in ME3. But it would be awesome to be chased by another Spectre only to discover it's actually Kaiden. What an epic confrontation they could make of that!

You guys nuts? It's Legion. He proves himself to be a spy on the Normandy already. He's a plant there by the Reapers to observe Shepard!
There should have been a 'Put Legion in the trash compactor and blow him out of the airlock' interupt for that bit of business. Two hours after he is activated he is scanning Talis omni tool.

I would have been fine with "Go ahead and shoot it, Tali."
