You should've killed Oghren in the Joining.
Killing Mhairi was pointless trolling of the fanbase. She was the female-warrior-npc-archetype breaker the fans had been wanting since DA:O. You shouldn't have killed her off. That simple.
Of course, Anders being the male-mage-npc-archetype breaker shouldn't have been killed in her place. Plus he's a lot of fun and I'd have screamed bloody murder if it had been him.

But Oghren? Oghren's a contemptable and drunk waste of space. All of his character development from DA:O was reverted anyway. You didn't do anything with him! So why not just kill him off right there?
I guarantee you nobody would've seen that coming, whereas I had the nagging feeling that either Anders or Mhairi was going to buy it since well, the both of them represented such a perfect response to our wishes that I knew it was too good to be true.

I was psyched when they announced Mhairi as a character. I wanted a female warrior who's a good zealot Grey Warden.

I don't care that she dies.

And no way. No one's ever killing Oghren.

Totally agree- if Bioware was trying to shock us with the death of Mhairi, well I was only shocked with how crummy and anticlimactic her actual death scene was.

Either have Oghren die (irony alert! The drunk finally gets a drink he can't handle!) or they should have waited until maybe half way through the game before letting companions take the Joining. That way at least you would have a reason to care about who lived or died- as it exists, Mhairi seemed like a cool character, but well you only have her around for all of 45 minutes before she kicks the bucket.

Why does it have to be about shock? People die in the Joining. Big whoop. She died. Get over it. Pass Go. Collect $200.

The fact that she had a character trailer is meaningless. She was a character.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't Daveth/Jory featured pretty heavily before Origins?

Then whooops.

IMHO, the joining death should have been random, with up to 2 "companions" not making it. Something like 50% that one companion (chosen at random) dies, and 15% that a second companion fails the joining as well.

Whats not to like about Oghren - his comments are priceless, he is a good 2 handed warrior(I usually dump Sten for him in Origins) and he is always good for a laugh.  I had to stop playing and recompose myself after he hit on Sigrun(sp?) so blatantly... maybe it's because I have had several friends kind of like him but I love Oghren as a team  member.  I was disappointed about the chick dying but not overly.  And since I have not seen another mage so far in Awakening - Anders is essential, unless you are playing one yourself.  Me I prefer rogues.

The REAL SHOCKER would have been to have Duncan's Beard die in the joining.

Just think about that ...

THINK ABOUT THAT.

Well, Oghren is one of my favorite characters, sure..

But if someone tells me they don't like him at all I have no trouble understanding this opinion.

I just think Mhairi died too quickly. Didn't make sense to me.

But if they decided to kill Oghren, yes, that would have been a big shocker, but then it's again pointless because there was so much talk about which character would be the returning one.. just to have the ONE dude that returns die so quickly? lol.

If death wasn't guaranteed for at least one companion, it would result in an 100% survival rate. Most people would just reload until they got the most favourable outcome.

Oghren dying in the Joining would have been... yeah. Wow. As much as I like him (once his approval is high, anyway), I'd have been very impressed by such a move. Wouldn't that mess up his epilogue, though? Or did that already happen?

Duncan's beard is the Chuck Norris of Dragon Age.  It is invincible, ever if its owner isn't.

I so wanted Mhairi to make it too, but she had "red shirt" painted all over her.  To be honest, I was disappointed in the joining anyway.  It felt rushed and sloppy and was treated almost like an afterthought.  Then you don't even get to confront the other characters about the fact that it's a death sentence.  Man, if you really want to get Alister pissed, just tell him that Duncan got what he deserved after putting you through the joining.  The combo of anger and shock from the VA was incredible.  I wasn't expecting anything like that in Awakening, but I was expecting something.  Oh well.  Live and learn.

I, for one, was expecting at least one person to back out, forcing you (or at least giving you the option) to do the Duncan thing and go all stabbity on them.

I even had his dagger with me from RtO.

Mhairi is what TV Tropes defines as a "mauve shirt". More development than your usual red shirt, but doomed to die from the lack of a blue shirt. Compare her to the GoW2 iteration of Carmine.

Well that would completely ruin it. Everybody would just keep reloading until they're least favourite characters kick the bucket.

I also disagree with the OP. Whilst I like Oghren and find him hilarious, a lot of people dislike him and they would rejoice when he died.

Mhairi was almost universally liked. Killing her definitely had an impact on the fanbase.

Also, she deserved it. What kind of idiot wants to be a Grey Warden?

I think, if they wanted Mhairi's death to have more of an impact, they should have given us more time to spend with her. That way we would be more emotionally attached (or disattached) to the character.

Personally, I would have loved to have a female warrior, but after hearing her dis Oghren (whom helped defeat the Blight... sorta) and she just seemed like she was better than everyone else I was glad she died as irony to not being suit to the task, while an Apostate and Drunk are... but that might just be me reading between the lines.

Make to it is random, but it happens per new game.

Also, I think you're forgetting that the Wardens are respected and even revered in some cases. It's something that people look at as a noble cause, so your question would be like asking what kind of idiot wants to be a cop. No, the mortality rate isn't the same, but you get the picture.
