True, but Mass Effect is a continually developing IP.  The better payoff they give, the more dedicated consumers they'll keep once they come out with Mass Effect 4, 5, and 6.

Yeah, I wish things worked that way, I really do. However customers aren't won in the same way that you think they are. As long as EA can hype the game it will sell. I'm sure that ME3 will be great, but I am not sure that any squadmates from ME2 will have a large role. In fact I'm mostly certain of the opposite.

And just to clarify, this isn't a plot/game will fail doom thread, this is purely discussing how Bioware either adapt the story to fit around multiple deaths or if they pump resources into significant differences between peoples games with varying character sets.

I don't see it as requiring significant resources, though, or at least moreso than a normal game.  I mean, look at Heavy Rain, and how it handled a continuing narrative despite possible character deaths.  That is, the game plays exactly the same no matter who lives and dies, with minor differences at the end of the game.  Characters exist in a sort of void and have no contact with each other -- already done in ME2, just look at the loyalty missions.  Almost without exception, all the dialog is between Shepard and the team member the mission is for.  The third person you bring along has nothing to input.

I can totally see having all the same characters come back, and deaths affecting nothing other than who you have available to talk with on the ship and a few throwaway lines before the final mission.  Especially if ME3 is focused on the Reapers more than the characters.

There has been conformation by the developers that they will have all squad mates from Me2 will return for Me3 provided that they lived through the suicide mission. This has been stated by Game Informer's latest magazine.

In what capacity is the issue here.
A 5 second cameo counts as a "return".

Ok, you're starting to sound like a troll now. With all this evidence, it sounds like you're wrong. Everyone will return as squadmates in ME3.

The thing about ME3 is we're getting more and more into the realm of constant "premium" DLC content.

So not only do they have to develop the game, they have to develop DLC for the game too.

Hell, you can already see how more attention was given to DLC and preorder items than to transfers from ME1 which amount to little more than cameos and emails.

Now I hear ugly rumours of games like Fable 3 (har har Pete the Liar yes I know moving on now) being "episodic" in that you get half a game and pay for more episodes later. I can see ME3 doing this too. I dread it, but I see it. So there's more development time going in the wrong direction.

If there's a dictionary defintiion of "wishful thinking" I suggest submitting a picture of yourself for it.
First of all, there's no evidence, just some guy talking about it.
Secondly, this "evidence" if it exists, speaks only of a promised "return" in an undefined way.

Oh but continue to delude yourself if you prefer.

Actually what they have to do is develop the game, sell you part of it, and then sell you the rest later.

That's more or less been done with ME2, however they seem to be moving on to attempting to make bite-sized DLC in a constant flow, and that does take development time.
Besides chopping up a game like that in the first place has to divert resources too.

Vocally complain until the dev's are sick of hearing about the subject in question. The Tali and Garrus romances were not intended to be in ME:2, but obsessive complaints from forum users gave Bioware incentive to include them in the final product. Plus, if the fans vocally and constantly demand a certain feature to be incorporated in a sequel, chances are that the developer will pay more attention to the issue that is receiving the most attention from it's fanbase.

It also gives Bioware a reason to prove to EA that including this feature would benefit sales. Also, you guys need to stop ripping on EA so much. Contrary to popular belief, EA is isn't as bad as a company anymore, they've been cleaning up their game quite a bit in recent months.

Don't bank on everyone, I'd say, realistically Liara is the only one we can be sure of, hoping for  all the rest IS wishful thinking until proven otherwise.

Sorry, but it is true

Actually, the game is set quite well to flow into ME3 with squadmates returning. Of course, in neither of the games has there been a really major role the squadmates were needed to continue. With the fact that the suicide mission requires at least 2 party members alive for Shep to live and the game to continue, coupled with Liara(guaranteed alive) and one Virmire survivor, gives a 4 man squad at absolute minimum: more than enough to get through the game. It is also quite likely that all of the LI's from ME2 will be in 3 for those who had them survive, as it has already been explicitly stated that cheating on your ME1 LI will have repercussions. That would leave 4 non-DLC characters as possibilities(Samara, Legion, Grunt, Mordin) and Wrex as the only ones who I would really question. This means that the game is playable for those with the absolute worse outcome, and for those with the best outcome, it isn't a whole lot more than in ME2 replacing Kasumi/Zaeed with Liara/Virmire survivor in terms of squadmate dialog. While I could see a couple characters having reason to be gone and being replaced by another for purpose of guaranteeing at least a certain couple characters exist for story purposes, the squad could be absolutely no one new, and both those who got owned by the suicide mission, and those who won it would be covered.

You know this reminds me of a similar change happening in tv shows. It used to be just about every tv show would end the episodes in pretty much the same way they began. Now we've got dozens of really successful high-profile shows that are parts of a continuing narrative. It's a risk--shows like that are harder for newcomers to just jump into--but the cult surrounding them is stronger and the stories are much more ambitious and memorable. Is Mass Effect willing to take that first step--be the first "Lost" or "The Wire" or "Mad Men" of video games? I guess we'll see.

I really want to keep them to keep most of the team from ME2, just to see people who killed most of their squad get ****ed over. A reward for not sucking at the game.

Hey, just because people died in the suicide mission doesn't mean you suck at the game. Some of us intentionally played the 'how do I get character X killed' game, for plot reasons. Sometimes it makes for a better story to have people die.

I can understand wanting to kill people for drama outside of the game, but in-character, a Commander Shepard actively trying to get the squad killed is a terrible commander and deserves to suffer for it.
