My computer specs:

Intel Core i7 920 Bloomfield processor
ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 motherboard
EVGA GeForce GTX 285 1GB video card
4 GB of Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333 RAM
Corsair CMPSU-1000HX PSU
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bits

Problem:

When I first start playing in a new area the game runs smooth as butter. As I fight and kill enemies, the game starts to get progressively sluggish. In long areas with plenty of enemies, such as the Deep Roads, the Brecilian Forest, the Wending Woods, Kal'Hirol, etc., by the time I'm halfway through the area the game is stuttering all over the place, with annoying slowdowns and micro pauses happening in and out of combat. Pressing the TAB key to highlight containers and other items causes the game to stutter.

Here's the interesting thing: if I save my game, close it and launch it again and load my save file, the stuttering and sluggishness will be GONE. Then I can continue clearing the rest of the area and by the time i'm nearing the end, the stuttering and slugishness is back.

I had this exact same problem on my previous, completely different system, wich had the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor
Gigabyte GA-X48-DS4 motherboard
VisionTek Radeon HD4870 video card
3 GB of DDR2 RAM
Windows XP 32-bits

Two completely diffrent systems, same exact problem. The problem seemed to have gotten worse with patch 1.02, and oddly enough it seems to hit my newer, beefier system worse. Is anyone else experiencing a similar problem? Is it something wrong with the game itself, or could it be something wrong with both my systems?

I have almost exact same system as you. Yes I am having problems with slowdowns and lockups too. It is the games fault. Memory Leak or some such nonsense.

Been like this since launch. Doesn't look like they will be fixing it soon, if at all. Too busy making DLC and Xpacks to worry about fixing their broken from launch game.

Same problem here. Even once the game got terribly sluggish after I Devoured the copses of 4-5 enemies at once, even though after that things were just fine.

I'm having the same problem on my system after installing awakening & the new patch. Before the new patch, I was only experiencing long load times.

I guess it's "good" to hear other people have a similar problem. Now I can rest easy knowing that it's probably not a problem with my current system (or my old one, for that matter).

Hopefully we get a fix for this at some point, cause it really detracts from the game experience.

Very same problems here. I thought it was my pc taking a **** on me when I experienced this. I hope this gets fixed asap. My performance was so much better before patch 1.03 The place where I got the worst performance was at the Wending Wood

thank goodness i'm not the only one, i was actually worried it was my laptop (alienware with awesome specs). I tried to persist and eventually it came up, just the once mind, saying the display driver failed and has corrected itself. It's not even at it's highest resolution because the text is to small. Same solution, save exit and start it up again and it's fine for a while longer.

no it's not your laptop...Bio's wonderful ****ing 1.03 patch has FUBAR'd a TON of games

crashes left and right..performance going down...general game bugs...etc.....it's what happens when EA takes over and you rush out a goddamn expansion so fast.

20thcenturyghost brought up an interesting point in a different thread. This game was originally deigned on DirectX 9. Yet Win7 and Vista run on DX10/11 have you tried installing the end user runtimes? www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx

Instructions:

Make a folder and call it DX on your desktop.
Download the file, when you run it, it asks for a destination path to extract the files. Use the folder you just made.
Go into the DX folder and find the setup utility and follow its instructions from there.

It doesn't say you have to restart afterward, but it's probably a good idea to do so either way. When you're done, you may delete the DX folder.

if you need to find out what version of DirextX is on your computer, go to Help and Support from your star menu and type in directx and you'll see a link that says. "What version of DirectX is on your computer?" Let this run a diagnostic and you'll know for sure. If you let it connect to the internet, it says it will also check your drivers.

From the looks of things, this mostly helps people that have a retail version of the game. It may work if you have a digital version, but most folks that say they have one also say it didn't help.

Actually I've had problems since after the first patch. When I get to the fight after the Landsmeet is slows down until crash every time, on 2 different computers, with 2 different OS. Since the newest patch I tried a second character and it did the same thing this time at the Bar in Lothering!  I said"**** It!" and will not touch it (or another DA game) again until a new patch.

I have the same problem. Installed the 1.03 patch, played the Return to Ostagar DLC, and the whole game slowed down as f**k. The same settings, before, let me play it as smooth as drinking water.

Same problem since launch.

It starts really nice but gets impossible to play after a few moments. It's worse on Awakening i think.

It's not a hardware issue, even with my oldie rig. I have 2 rigs, one with ATI and Win XP, one with nVidia and Win 7. On both the game is suffering from this same issue.

Wait...you've had problems with original game since launch and you go out and buy the Xpac? Then your suprised that it doesn't work either? Holy Maker! You parted with your money quite easily didn't you?

As far as your second paragraph that is the same situation I'm in. Two different rigs with different OS and still same crash in same place. Except I was smart enough not to buy the Xpac!:P

This problem has existed since launch. Patch 1.03 definitely improved the loading times, stutters and framerate drops, but it's still there after a couple of hours of gameplay. Not sure if it will ever be fixed, but nobody ever said BioWare's in-house game engines were ever technical marvels...

Same issue ONLY after the new patch / Awakening expansion. Do not experience in any game other than Dragon Age and never before the patch. Another issue on the long list to add with the new patch / expansion.

At this rate I don't doubt there would be some bug at the end of the game where Oghren bends over and 10 Nugs come flying out of his ass and announces that he is the maker.

Were off to see the wizzard the wonderful wizzard of bugs! :wizard:

I bought it because i CAN play, it just gets really laggy after a few hours. Sometimes minutes. If i leave the game and open it again it fixes the problem. And it appears to be worse in Awakening.

I'm experiencing notable stutter and slowdowns, plus occasional craches, since installing 1.03. It is really striking how well DAO ran on 1.02, compared to 1.03. I really wish Bioware would address the obvious widespread problems with the 1.03.

Nah, you just get to have the cutscene of the mother dying loop ad infineum instead of getting credits et cetera :(
