Oblivion vanilla is just fine. It's also an outstanding Western RPG that doesn't try to keep you in a walled garden for a change. The world is your oyster. It's beautiful.
All Elder Scrolls games are like that.
Bethesda and BioWare fan for life!

Daggerfall has an amazing story... full of intrigue & NPCs trying to stab you in the back... the game even has three or four endings.MerinTB wrote...

There is no romance in the game. Also, if you use fast-travel, you can indeed beat the game at level 1 within 40 minutes. Doesn't require a lot of know-how, but it does require you don't stop to smell the roses.
However, if you buy Oblivion to play it, you don't play it for the main story. The side-quests and other stuff you can do is the only thing that makes the game feel less shallow than a facepaint.
Pretty much this.
Elder Scrolls games are NOT played for their story. You play an Elder Scrolls game because you have large control over creating your character and deciding where you want to go and what you want to do.
You really shouldn't play it like a Bioware game ( you can try, I guess ) but my suggestion is if you want to enjoy it, come up with a character concept during your character creation and just run around the world being that guy. Play the game in small chunks, leave it to play another game, come back to build more on your character and explore the world more. It is most fun, IMO, if you treat it like there is no main story and you just return time and again to wander around and experience the open sandbox-ness of it.
It's not my ideal type of game, but if you approach it not expecting even the level of story in Fallout 3, you can have a lot of fun.
Even Morrowind's story is pretty good because of the thousands years of lore behind the main events happening in the game... and the brilliant part is that ultimately it is up to the player to believe which of the many versions of the story one wants to believe.
As for Oblivion, the main story is the standard 'ancient evil returns, go out and fetch some items & gather some allies while solving everyone's problems' story that is token of the majority of RPGs, including BioWare's. The difference is just that Oblivion does not have memorable characters (save for a few like Haskill or Sheogorath) one can chat up for ever, like in a BioWare game.

8 endings actually.
Which are all simultaniously canon thanks to a time paradox.
Bethesda's writers are weird.

Don't listen to all mod-a-holics , the game is fine as it is.
Playing vanilla since release and still love it.
Of course mods do make everything even better.

I didn't, I said the game is fine as it is, but mods make it even better.
It was directed at people that keep saying "Crap without mods"

Dragon Breaks = literally retcons. It's actually a clever move because it's well-integrated into the lore.
