Why Bioware should do it:

-Sheppard's back story in ME1 revolves around his service with the Alliance against Batarian slavers, getting a batarian party member would make for some interesting dialogue. Think Tali & Legion, but better.

-Batarians hate humans and their government funds slavers and pirates who raid human colonies. Almost every batarian you interact with in ME2 hates you (the bartender drugs you). Given how they are depicted as violent, anti-human, and morally bankrupt, a batarian party member could either be a paragon of virtue, different from the rest, or an amoral, bloodthirsty killer like Balak. Think of the plot angles, the party member could be a soldier who fought against Shepard on Mindoir/Torfan, a slaver who dealt with the Collectors, etc...

-The Batarians are ruled politically by an autocratic rogue state, economically by that state's control of industry, and socially by their caste system. They are totally unique in terms of the structure of their society, imo it would be infinitely more interesting to learn about them than a minor race like the Drell (as awesome as Thane is ^_^)

-Let's just face facts, batarians are the most awesome looking aliens in the entire game. They are four eyed frog people who go around raiding human colonies and pissing off the Council in general. Plus Bioware has put them into the plot heavilly in both games, imo that means they are thinking the same thing for ME3.

Seriously...how awesome would this be?

As to the "frog people" bit, i don't know if Batarians are actually amphibious.....I kind of thought they were just hairless mammalians (maybe synapsids, idk).

But I absolutely agree with you that a Batarian party member would add so much more to the game, and give a wildly different angle on the ME galaxy than what we've been accustomed to. And the combination of the eyes with that sinister voice effect.......yeah man, I'm all for this.

Not all batarians in the game hate you, though....some of the Blue Suns in the beginning of Archangel's recruitment are actually relatively civil. Salkie, Cathka, etc.

Bioware could take it a step further even and make this charachter part of an elite military/slaving group possessing tactics and methods unique to the batarians. I mean you guys figure the turians have their dreadnought fleets, the asaris have their commandos, Justicars, and Ardat-Yakshi, the Krogans have their Battlemasters, and the Salarians have the STG, why not add one for the batarians?

That's true, maybe the new party member could come from there. But that might be overkill with Zaed already in ME2

My Mindoir-born Shepard would need a lot of convincing to accept such a squad member.

Mordin's mission had two sub-missions involving batarians I forgot. See there's no way Bioware adds that in, on top of all the batarians on Omega you can interact with without having something planned. It's just too interesting an idea not to explore, the batarians and the Terminus System races are militarily opposed to the Council, and the possibilty of triggering a war with them prevented the Council from sending it's fleet after Saren in ME1. It also led the Council to ground your ship before the Ilos mission. Shepard's background missions as a Spacer and as a Colonist both involve batarians as did the mission where you killed Elanos Haliat, and obviously Bring Down the Sky.

Adding a party member from a race led by a secretive, autocratic, and sinister government provides so many new dialogue possibilies and a new angle on the plot of the ME trilogy, it makes too much sense.

Legion is awesome, but a batarian slaver commando who hates humanity and only serves under Shepard out of nessessity/greed would add too much to the plot to leave out. The dialogue could center around angrily resolving grudges and differences over Mindoir/Torfan (Renegade) or building a friendship and trying to persuade the squad member to see humans differently while learning more about batarian culture and maybe even visiting the batarian homeworld for that squad member's loyalty mission.

That's what makes it such an interesting option, it brings Shepard into a personal conflict with a squad mate over his history.

That encounter didn't end well for them when I played through last...

...In fact, most encounters with Batarians don't end well for them when Vanessa Shepard is involved.

No, Batarians are ugly and not awesome looking. If you want awesome looking, those are the turians.

Seriously...how awesome would this be?

No? All the batarians you meet in Mass Effect are either criminals, mercenaries, slavers, and most of them hate humans. That's not awesome, that's annoying.

I think having a Batarian squaddie could add meaning to the intense one-dimentionality of their entire race. I for one like the idea.

It could work. After all, human and turian relationships have always been fairly strained due to the First Contact War, but you get someone like Garrus who is friends with Shepard despite his race. Just because a lot of batarians are slavers and hate humans, doesn't mean that they all feel that way. Slavery is legal on the homeworld, I think..

If we get a batarian I hope it's because he's a real bad ass who could be a great asset(like legion, for instance), not because he's actually a "good" batarian who likes to pick flowers and write love poems about how misunderstood his race is and how he loves everyone else in the universe.
