Unique Item Clones = Terrible Idea!

I am really quite appalled at the number of unique items that have been cloned in Awakening. It totally takes away from the importance of any of these items... and it makes no sense whatsoever.

Even the Legendary Items, those with a codex entry, are not exempt. Heck, I have seen a *bunch* of Thorn of the Dead Gods, Yusaris, Mages Eye, and even the Keening Blade.

Cannot kill Gaxxkang? Don't worry, it is yours for the low, low price of...

Whose idea was this? Why was it even thought to be a good idea?

If I was an Orlesian Warden... maybe.

But simply having each unnamed merchant selling Legendary Items... very silly, indeed.

Hey, while you're at it, give Nathaniel an extra copy of the Dawn Ring... I am sure those Archons of the Imperium are made in sets of twelve...

The game was originally designed with only the Orlesian Warden.

After months of watching this games development... I have to say this is the first time I have heard that.

Proof? Because it sounds very wrong...

It just kind of seems like the Orlesian Warden should be the protagonist. But that is just my opinion, I imported a character from Origins and there was some crossover but it still seemed like a spinoff both in how it played and how its story was presented.

Also I noticed the number of duplicates, seemed kind of off to me personally

Loved the mother sword, sentinel set and heartwood bow.

Yeah, it's kind of weird, I found a Frenzy battleaxe early in the game, then later found *another* Frenzy at the Shrine of Korth under the Keep. Then I had two.

I'm pretty sure I came across *two* pairs of Boots of the Sentinel and *two* sets of Stormchaser Gloves.

I guess unique items just aren't ... unique ... anymore.

I have to ask... who cares for those now-reduced-to-crappy-lame-items from Origins? Also, Thorn of the Dead Gods was not good even in DA:O. You (OP) might be confusing it with The Rose's Thorn which is the best dagger in that game.

I've just started Awakening after recreating my fav char (had sacrificed in his first run) and gone thru Origins without any DLC items on it, like I did in my very first run on release date while I waited for my pre-order C.E. - with WK and SP DLC's on it- to be released here where I live. (don't ask me how... the hypocrisy of some people's sense of justice really annoys me)

So, I loaded my level 25 (thanks to RtO it's now a very legit level in Origins) with all the best Origins items my 2hander had plus some other stuff and a pair of Stone Prisoner's items in the inventory because the no DLC items restriction I imposed on myself was for Origins alone. (And left Alistair with all RtO's items as I thought it was right to do)

Well, 5 minutes into the game and I'm selling all that load on junk from Origins and not because of the money! =)

Has anyone found the unique duplicates to be random for each game?

btw... I also got two Frenzy axes... and Wade is still selling the Stormchaser gloves even though I bought them!

This really doesn't bother me, the more stuff the merrier. I know this isn't a NWN's magic and loot heavy game, but I'm fine with finding more of anything. Ideally I'd like more unique items over reusing items, but I'll take what I can get. Call me a loot **** if you want. I wish more stuff was found, it annoys the crap out of me to open the 400th chest with nothing but a rusty short sword. Or to kill my 40th orange critter and find a deathroot.

I know I know, this is a dialog and character driven game, but more STUFF is always fun as well :)

Moar is always good...

But how cheap is it? What, they were running out of names? How hard is it to give a *unique* item a different name for the expansion...

They are the *same* items...

How many freaking Thorn of the Dead Gods are there? Whole ****ing sets, apparently.

I think they were pretty lazy with the items in general. Not just as evidenced by the duplicates, but by the fact that the new ones tend to have pretty lame (i.e. short) descriptions. I expect more attention to detail from Bioware, honestly.

Take the Sentinel armor, for instance. Aside from the description of the set bonus, each piece's description is a whole two sentences. Copypasta'd pretty badly, too, with the gloves and boots having pronoun-antecedent disagreement consequently.

It seems like most of the new items have been given this sort of treatment. Sure, they have nice stats and all, but would it hurt that much to write out a nice description for them, too? Surely I'm not the only one who actually liked reading a paragraph or two (or three) on the history of a unique item?

And, not to completely derail the thread (sorry about that)... the fact that there are duplicates does sort of cheapen the credibility of the history of many such supposedly unique items.

Maybe there was a time paradox resulting in the cloning of all unique items in Dragon Age?

Naaah. I'm guessing it was for the Orlesian Warden since they wouldn't have access to good gear in the beginning.

Well according to the codex for Thorns of the Dead Gods, there were 3 daggers made. So if you didn't find them all in Origins it doesn't break lore to buy them in Awakening.

I thought I'd go crazy when Wade had made me the Dragonbone sword, and when I see it, it's just another retextured Starfang!!

C'mon, a little more imagination, please.

The ones in the shops are set, as far as I'm aware. I sold all of them before importing, so i just rationalised it that Bodahn had passed them on via trade connections.

However, the drop items are random, and largely on boss-level enemies: on my first run-through I found The Rose's Thorn on the smuggler leader, and on my second I found the Vestments of Urthemiel (robe found in Drake's Fall) on the Apostate Mage boss of the 'Out of Control' quest.

True, but if the poor guy bought all that clone stuff to get through the rough starter stages, he'd never be able to afford the real stuff later on. Rather than being helpful, imho it would actually doom to poor Orleisan guy to crap gear forever.

Man, this one said it! I wanted so much that Vigilance looked as bad azz as The First's great sword which I used until I had V forged! If not that, anyother thing but a starfang clone. That really sux! I'm a greatsword maniac in most RPG's I play and I love how some of those games treat diversity and cool looks!

Vigilance looks like a jrpg sword, lol. But that's part of the charm. I took the one with low stats with no elemental damage because the sword looks too good to be covered up in flames or frost.

Ah, sod it! I just switched my 3 intensifying runes from Starfan.. err.. Vigilance to The Mother's Chosen and gave V to Oghren while I keep the menacing looking sword. I'll all for the looks and man, does that Mother's sword look good?

Weird thing is that while it has the icon of Starfang, Vigilance has the icon of a double bladed sword just like the Mother's. Wondering is someone messed up when programming!

I think it was just a space filler/second chance for people that missed those items.

Nope, the Thorns of the Dead Gods are part of a single set made by a single Smith woth the remnants of a single blade. If there are others, crafted by a different smith, they would have a different name.

Anyway, back on point...It really didi annoy me that you could buy another Yusaris. That's just wrong. And then there's the fact that I had to pay hundreds of soveriegns on the Rose's Thorn and Felon's Coat becuase they were "unique", now some random city guard has exact duplicates. That's just wrong.

I didn't really enjoy the loot system in Awakening at all, there's duplicates of unique items all over the place and it feels like they are simply dropping uber powerful items all over the place. I swear, there's about 20 staves that are more powerful than Staff of the Magister Lord and 4 or 5 of them drop in a single quest.
