Hey guys.. I just remembered a thing... There is a tree in Amaranthine, in the area near the church where you can have a dialogue with her. This dialogue is short but it concerns her personaly history

Maybe this dialogue is needed in order to unlock her random encounter

No it's not I just did the tree dialog after the encounter (2nd play through, never got it in the first one)

I finally got Velanna's quest. Factors: she was at 78 approval, we had talked about the tree near the chantry, and I had just turned in the merchant quest that related to her. After doing that, I  traveled 4-5 times back and forth from the Deep Roads to the Wending Woods before bumping into the Dalish clan.

More details: I had finished 2/3 of the main quests including Wending Woods, and she did not go through with her joining yet.

The only thing that is different for me is that I did the joining ritual. Mabe you can only trigger the encounter before she becomes a Grey Warden.

Yesterday I tried it for more then an hour but it didn't trigger.

Yeah the approvals can be glitchy... Sigrun was at 100 and "neutral" while the elf was at 60 and "love"

maybe it only occurs if you haven't finished all three major areas?

This is a bit frustrating.  I just finished the game tonight, and I didn't even know that Velanna or Sigrun had companion quests until checking on this forum.  I tend to be a completionist in these sorts of games, and I did every other quest I picked up in the game (except for Oghren's-- he didn't like me enough to talk about it).  I'm a slow player-- I took about 30 hours in finishing the game-- and I know that I did plenty of wandering around the world map with Velanna in my party.

Both she and Sigrun had high approval.

That's where I was when two and a half hours of nothing but wandering between areas got me nothing but enemies to fight.

It doesn't seem right to tie a personal quest into a random encounter, that seems to have a low chance of triggering. Or maybe the chance is high, but you have to do certain things first that people aren't doing. Wynne's personal quest relied on encounters as you were travelling, but AFAICT it like many others had a 100% chance of triggering once you met certain conditions.

I never was able to do Sigrun's personal quest either. She's supposed to run into somebody in Amaranthine (according to Prima) who will trigger it. I never ran into the person, I'm sure it's because I again missed an environmental trigger that enabled me to start dialogue with her.

My other Velanna question is this: before we meet her, she seems to have two powers: the ability to teleport from place to place (or at least anywhere there's vegetation, she seems to use the roots of plants that spring up from the earth), and the ability to animate trees and turn them into sylvans.

How come she no longer has those abilities once she joined the party? I was rather disappointed that Keepers don't have a summon sylvans ability. If they didn't want to make those part of the Keeper spec, they could make them Velanna-unique/specific special abilities.

(I actually know the answer to the teleport one, it's because teleport spells/powers in many rpg's can cause devastating problems with game-breaking, because you teleport around plot triggers.)

Sigrun's quest is bugged by doing the Law and Order quest or its Smuggling counterpart in Amaranthine. The person who triggers it permanently despawns, apparently.

Strange, there must be something that prevents the start of the encounter. I can't imagine that it depends so much on luck that you either get it very fast or never.

It does seem totally random across the board to trigger Velanna's quest.  With her approval at 17, for me, when I triggered it I don't think I'd given her any gifts.  I'll go back and check that.  I'd guess it can trigger anywhere on the road?  Or maybe it's tied to the road between Wending Woods and other places?   Can you actually trigger it without Velanna being in the party?  I'd think we'd see more mention / posts of a fight with a Dalish clan along the road in that case.  Just trying to think of possible answers, I don't know why it's so random / varied.  Posted Image

I'll be hitting Wending Woods later, will take notes!

In Origins, my first playthrough, it took me 3 days of playing and and an hour here, an hour there of traveling back and forth on the road from Redcliffe to finally trigger the star metal cutscene for Starfang.  Second playthrough, I got it straight out from camp on the way to Redcliffe.

This is *definitely* bugged...

I have been trying for hours to trigger this - I doubt it is supposed to be as random as Axameter.

Sad that we do not know how the bug is triggered, unlike Sigrun.

BAware really screwed up this game.

I also had the random encounter without Velanna in the party. I was surprised to say the least about why a random bunch of elves tried to kill me, and never realized that was supposed to have been her personal quest.

I was returning to the Keep from Amaranthine when it triggered.

I don't think that's Velanna's trigger for her sidequest. I had a whole bunch of elves attack me in the forest while Velanna was in my party, which I have to admit was pretty odd, but it wasn't her random encounter since I still haven't been able to get that. Or, at least,  if it was she didn't tell me about it or talk to any of the attacking elves.

I got the random encounter taking that route too and my approval with her was about 30 or so. I just kept telling her that her sister would be saved and not embarrassed her in front of Mervis.

I spent hours running around between locations with Velanna in tow, attempting to trigger her event as well as the encounter required to complete the "Trade Must Flow" quest.  I finally got the required encounter for "Trade Must Flow" but this was well after I had recruited every party member and numerous miscellaneous random encounters with bandits, werewolves, wolves, darkspawn, and Avvar barbarians (weren't they all supposed to be dead?) but I never got Velanna's encounter to trigger.

Would be nice if one of the developers from Bioware could tell us how it is triggered.

That would be nice indeed. It would be just as cool if anybody figured it out though. There has to be some solution to it. If some people can trigger it and others cannot, there has to be a certain path to triggering it.

I've been trying to get this quest to trigger as well.  I have no clue, I've tried several different things.  Would be nice to know how to get this..  she's the only companion I can't get a quest done for.

Is it just a really rare encounter like the meteorite for Starfang?  If so, I think that's incredibly lame.

First two playthroughs this triggered fine for me. No special approval no magical order of talking to her. Now these last two playthroughs I havent been able to get her quest to trigger at all. Sadly the only change is on these last two playthroughs is I've recruited Sigrun and done her personal quest before getting Velanna.

We need someone to figure out if the console can be used to force-trigger the quest. It's the only answer I can think of, and I even tried to look into it myself, but I can't figure out where to start...
