a drop of Archdemon blood,
how were the first Warden created? Did they drink the blood during the fight with the Durmat? Seems a bit far-fetched.

It doesn't require archdemon blood but dark spawn blood. The dark spawn corrupt old gods when they find them below ground turning them into archdemons.

I assume the Archdemon resurrected several times until someone figured out what to do. That makes plenty of Archdemon blood to drop into the Joining chalice.

Edit: Origins lore was that you need Darkspawn blood, Archdemon blood, lyrium and magic to prepare the concoction.
Alistair tells you that this is what he knows about the Joining ritual. When Anders asks in Awakening the ritual is describes very sloppily.

My theory is they successfully killed him in his dragon form and he ecaped to another Darkspawn. They then somehow figured out what needed to be done and drank the blood of the dispossed body of the Archdemon in order to become Grey Wardens. Yes it is a bit of a stretch, but then again so are alot of things about the Grey Wardens.

They could use a substitute for Archdemon blood but that requires a very corrupt Darkspawn, which is very rare indeed.

This does make a bit of sense, how else would they be aware of the archdemons ability to escape into nearby darkspawn if it hasn't happened before. Most likley they determined that its blood were the key to its power. Or perhaps the warden who did the slaying got infected by the blood by mistake, and found out it gave him the ability so sense darkspawn.

It's mentioned it requires dark spawn blood and the blood of an archdemon. Think riordan mentions it when you find him in the estate, and that fereldens supply of archdemon blood had been confiscated by loghain.
