Even if they were related, we're unlikely to ever know. Just as we're unlikely to ever find out if Alistair is Fiona's son or not.

*spoiler*

Eh. Maybe we should hire the Dark Wolf to find out.

I really liked Cullen...I'm suprised I didn't recognize the voice.

Funny how it gives me a little piece of mind that I wasn't the only one who thought Alistair and Anders were alike and yadda yadda. I was beginning to think I was hallucinating from hours upon hours of non-stop gameplay.

I love Cullen. Unfortunately that automatically makes me want to throw all my mage PCs at Anders.

You're definitely not the first person to think it. I'm firmly in the neutral, I don't particularly care if they're related or not camp. But that's just me.

I bet the Darkwolf would have no idea either. It's not like there's anyone still alive to confirm whether Alistair is even Fiona's son or not. Much less if Anders is another one of Maric's bastards.(Well, there is Eamon. But that's assuming that he knows who Alistair's mother is. And I doubt he does, if it's not the maid.)

How is this conversation happening in the no spoilers section?? LOL

**SPOILERS FOR THE BOOKS**

There is no way he could be Katriel's son, because I think someone would have noticed in camp, in the Dark Roads or when Maric's sword was through her gut that she was pregnant - just a hunch. Perhaps he could be Fiona's son, but if he is then Duncan did a ******-poor job of placing him. We'd need more of Ander's back story than we are given to figure out whether or not it is possible for him to have been Fiona's or not.

I really don't see them as being all that similar in looks or personality, They're both blond and given to humorous sarcasm, but that's about it.

Besides being the funny one in the group I really didn't think he was much like Alistair at all. They looked similar, but heck Valenna and Morrigan have the same exact hairstyle only different colors.

That's the reason I didn't recruit him after the prologue (I did, however, stipulate that he be shown mercy).

He may be nice and all that but he's basically another version of Alistair. Seems like someone at Bioware reeeeallllllly didn't want to bother creating new personalities and simply chose to recycle and reuse old models.

I'm no longer sold on the theory that they may be brothers, but I still think the resemblance is striking, and they do share a lot of the same characteristics.

Comparison of their facial features from the first trailer, old thread:

Here's a blown up shot of the mage compared to Alistair and
Cailan. He seems to have exactly the same eye shape and nose as
Alistair. On the other hand, his eyes appear smaller, his face is more
angular, and his cheekbones are wider set - I find this interesting
because those are typical characteristics of elves.

If you're comparing looks... okay, maybe they look similar to you. I don't really see it. But as I mentioned before, that's highly subjective.

But their personalities are really not much alike. And It seems a bit presumptuous of you to suggest that Anders is a recycled version of Alistair when you haven't even recruited him.

Well, they do look similar to me. And it seems like I'm not alone. They even sound very similar, despite the fact that they're voiced by different actors. And I think it's intentional, too.

As for the characters, I usually 'play ahead' a bit, before making major choices (like keeping someone in the party). And it did seem to me that his manners and attitude were basically a slightly modified version of Alistair's.

Yep, it's Alistair. He always was a bit dozy, thinks he can just put on a frock and we will all be fooled.

*****SPOILERS*****

Sorry, with all the spoilers already mentioned and it in the title - I didn't realize that this was in the No Spoiler forum - perhaps someone should move it...

Anders and Alistair do look similar; however, I don’t believe that Anders is Katriel or Fiona’s child. Furthermore, I believe it unlikely that he is Maric’s child.

Katriel died during the books and there was no mention that she was ever pregnant or with child at any point. If Katriel had been visibly pregnant or given birth to a child that would have ended Rowan’s suspicions about if her affair with Maric continued past the first night.

Duncan promised to watch over Fiona’s child. As already mentioned, if Anders was that child, he certainly did a bad job of it. Especially, since it is clear Duncan was watching over Alistair.

Maric does not seem to be the type to sleep around with a lot of women. He really wanted Fiona’s child to be a part of his life and even live in the castle. There are gossip rumors that Maric has a bastard son who lives in the castle. It is possible that Anders was that child and sent off to the Circle as a teen. He appears to have been faithful to Rowan during their marriage and had a lot of regrets over Katriel. He even wanted Fiona to stay with him despite her being an elf and a mage. So, he does not appear to be the type to sleep around carelessly. There is no mention of any other romance or sexual relationship in the books other than Katriel or Fiona.

The only other possible sexual encounter in the books would have been Flemeth & Maric. I think that it is doubtful that Anders is the result of this since Flemeth seems to only have daughters and Flemeth would not likely send her son off to the Circle – that doesn’t make any sense. It seems more likely that Morrigan may be the result of a Flemeth/Maric one night stand which adds a whole new meaning to the “dark ritual.”

In the history of the Fereldans, Duncan was the master warrior, Loghain was the strategist, Cailen was the playa.

I think it's just you. I think it was Bioware's attempt at making an Alistair type character. I did grow quite fond of him though, despite the crappy convo system and initially thinking he was a less smooth Atton Rand/Han Solo/Alistair type of character.

They are similar because Bioware developers are bad at making unique faces (in Dragonage) =/ Most of the males look the same except for things like hair. All have the same shaped face, eyes, jaw, mouth and nose.

Speak for yourselves. Anders and Alistair look VERY similar to me. Whether this was recycling facial types, or a hint at something more, I can't say. But the similarities in appearance are pretty striking.

Hell, I specced Anders as an Arcane Warrior in my first playthrough and put him in stormchaser armor. I had to do a double take initially, because the resemblance to Alistair in full metal gear was pretty heavy.

Who knows. Could be yet another bastard of Maric's. maybe Fiona's kid. I rather hope Maric sired an army of bastards. He breeds some pretty fine specimens of boys. I must locate and collect them all...

* Possible Spoiler*

Do my eyes and ears decieve me or do Anders and Alistair look and sound a lot alike? It has my little brain wondering if they could be half brothers.

Indulge me if you would please. If Anders were the son of Katriel and King Maric and Alistair the son of the serving girl and King Maric...it would explain away some of the discrepancies...wouldn't it?

*edited to add spoiler warning *

I thought exactly the same thing. I wasn't a particularly huge Alistair fan but I quite like Anders. The other characters - Ogrhen aside - are pretty bland so he more than makes up for that! I'm quite positive that he's voiced by the same actor too...

They don't look alike (beside the hair color) or sound alike for me
Anders is eager for freedom while Alistair like his duties.

If we overanalyse this, then when the truth comes out it will shock us all. But I know a little secret; Anders is Alistair's alter-ego!

~~Possible Spoilers~~

In real life brothers, especially all with different mothers, wouldn't necessarily look identical. Looking at the side by side comparison above, I could buy them being brothers. I know lots of brothers (in real life) that have the same birth mother and father and they don't look anything alike. I'm just saying. My guess is that Anders belongs to Maric and Fiona or is Wynne's long lost son for future game story purposes.
