uhm, this might be just my 2 penny's but,
It doesn't matter if Duncan watches over Fiona's child or not, if it is a mage it would have to be send to the Circle. No question. Now, Anders went there when he was a teenager so Duncan almost did a good job, but I guess Anders could help but shoot some fool with lightning.
The similarities of Anders and Alistair a coincidence or...**Possible Spoilers**

Considering their facial similarities--shape of the nose, eyes, eyebrows; hair and skin color; distance of features relative to each other--and their similar goofy senses of humor, I can easily see Anders and Alistair (same first initial; interesting as well on a subtle level) being fraternal twins. If Fiona read magical ability in one of her babies but not the other, then it would make sense for why she split them up.

Seriously, give him Alistair's hairstyle and stubble, widen the jaw a bit, open the eyes just slightly wider, and you've got Alistair. I have a very difficult time believing it wasn't deliberate because there are so. many. similarities.

*SPOILERS*
I *wish* Anders were Fiona's son, if only because then I'd be able to forgive Maric for Alistair's upbringing.

I've been illustrating a story with the toolset that has both of them in it, and the more I see the two of them together, the less I see a resemblance that goes beyond two guys with light hair and strong noses. Side by side, in the same lighting, they really don't look all that much alike.
