like so, so many others I've been having Dragon Age Origins: Awakening crash to desktop, repeatedly. I haven't even been able to get into Vigil Interior due to it crashing to desktop.
It seems to crash under the following circumstances:
-In Battle
-Loading Screen
-Casting Magic
-Loading Dalouge
-Any

I've tried the following steps:
-disabled all mods
-set graphics to ugly (low)
-disabled AA
-run in window
-run full screen
-played with new charecter
-played with imported charecter
-run in compatabilioty mode
-run as administrator
-run in directx9
-even though i have a 32bit OS i also tried the "4gb patch" from Explorer Suite, didn't work
-disabled all DLC

I've had occasinoal issues with Dragon Age Origins before, mainly it minizing to desktop, though running in window fixed all that.

I have 150+ hours in deragon age origins
my specs are:
Windows Vista
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHZ
GeForce 8600 GTS
4gb RAM
plenty of HDD space

I figure it could either be a 1.3 patch problem, or just a problem with awakening.

either way, bioware, please fix this. Or at least tell us you're aware of it and are working on it.

p.s. my online profile has real problems updating, working on that at all?

anyone out there heard any official word or have any fixes themselves?

2 things you can try:

1: Clear your temp cache. One user reported it fixed his crashing problems.

2: Disable autosave and in the Game Options, go to the Online tab and disable all the options there. A number of people have reported this has greatly decreased the crashes.

No guarantees this will work, but it's worth checking.

TBH, I think its a problem with Awakening. I can play DA:O perfectly fine, but After getting into my Awakening character, it crashes after a few seconds of gameplay.

Hmm,maybe Awakening have something to do with Win 7 64-bit?It's just i have same problems, can't even get to Tower(begining of awakening)thanks to crashes.

But i noticed...if guards trying to speak with me game crashes.

If i enter cortyuard via main gates(not fields from left or right)game crashes

75% it will randomly crash in random place.

Count me in, although I've learned to live with it in Bioware games. Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, Dragon Age, Awakening - all of them have a habit of crashing often, sometimes several times in an hour.

I'd be much happier if they actually fixed some of the bugs that prevent me from continuing playing.

Seeing as I can't be part of the solution, I guess I'll chip in my two-cents' worth to become part of the problem:

I am having the same trouble.  My system is Core i7 920, 3GB Corsair Dominator DDR3-1600, GeForce 9800GT + GeForce 8600GT (for PhysX), TONS of hard drive space, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  Didn't have such issues with vanilla DA:O, even after 1.3 patch (though haven't played much vanilla since this patch) - have played a total of some 400 hours, give or take.  Awakening time is only some 30-40 hours, but have had many, many more crashes in this time than in all my DA:O time, including original (unpatched) build.

(I refer here to the crash-to-desktop issue, not the numerous logic bugs and such)

PS: Some additional info.  When does it crash?
- Most often in combat, especially when casting spells (Mana Clash triggers a crash particularly often.)
- Often when there are flashy graphics happening in combat (example: when Queen of Blackmarsh turns into its wisps form)
- Other times, too, at random, but much less often - the great majority of my crashes have been in combat.

EDIT:
OK, this is getting ridiculous - with both my imported and fresh characters, I am unable to finish this game, because I can't make it through the final battle without the game crashing - and, of course, it's impossible to save in combat.  This last time was particularly infuriating - SO CLOSE to finishing... BAM! CTD!  Argh!

I think I am putting this down until a patch is released - which is a pity, as I am reviewing it for a magazine, and will have to write about it without having completed it.  (OK, ONE more try... just one!)

ok i've emptied my temp folders and disabled the online and autosave options

good news:

it runs totally lag free...

bad news:

untlll it crashes, middle of a fight, exactly where it's crashed many times before :(

Note: i've been playing nearly crash free on my laptop for days now, i think i've had maybe 5 crashes in 20 hours. the specs on that one are:

INTel duo 2 core 2.4ghz

geforece 9500m GTS

4+ gb RAM

plenty of HDD space

vista 32 bit

as opposed to my main pc

INTel duo 2 core 2.4ghz

geforece 8600 GTS

4+ gb RAM

plenty of HDD space

vista 32 bit

p.s. please forgive the lateness of my reply

I have tried the suggested "fix" of clearing temp and disabling online options (curiously, even when I do that, I get occasional "could not connect to online service" messages - WHY? It shouldn't even be LOOKING online!) - no difference. Still crashes mid-combat - the LAST battle, in fact, over and over...

OK, here is something that helped me - it may or may not help others with the crashing problem. I have found that if I play battles zoomed out as far as possible, the crashes are less frequent (though they can still happen.) I haven't tested this extensively, so it may just be coincidence, but is worth a try.  (At least I managed to finally finish the game with one party, this way.)

@Dan: I hear you! Also wishing for a new patch. Especially as I fancy doing another DA:O playthrough in the not-too-distant future - and you say now the vanilla game also crashes, which I am not looking forward to. I reckon I will just wait for a patch before I re-play - hopefully there will be some decent new DLC out there by then...

far as i'm concerned it's unplayable till it's patched, at least on this computer, it's a good thing bioware is so awesome, if any lesser developer did this i'd be walking away.

The game is totally unplayable after virus 1.03. Is ANYONE able to defeat the archdemon without crash to desktop? There are also random crashes in every larger combat. The problem is 100% for sure the virus (patch). I have reinstalled the game back to 1.02a, and everything is working great. I have the game on two computers (one with win7 and one with winVista, both far over recommended stats) and it is the same on both.

It's a shame I can't play Awakening, but with 1.03 it isn't possible anyway.

I'm shocked that Bioware hasn't even made a temporary 1.02b, that downgrades Origins back to 1.02, except for the part making it compatible with Awakening.

The worst however, is that Bioware seems to ignore the problem, and continue talking about new DLC and games.

Bioware: How can you watch your masterpiece and customers suffer like this?

Btw: It is also shocking that a lot of silly story bugs at the end of origins, and some minor issues STILL isn't fixed. This is NO problem to fix - there are tons of unofficial mods fixing it. However: I want it in the vanilla game, and most players doesn't know about mods. It is also only possible on PC.

calling it a virus aint exactly helping...
from what i've heard and figured, EA is the stopping block here (no surprise), they're the ones handeling the tech support and complaints and what not. However communicating with EA is like batteling a mythic fire breathing dragon with a hose that shoots oil. counter-productive to say the least

EA might as well just reset all of their community/social/forum data to zero and hire someone else to build it anew from the ground up. i think i've got like 20 EA accounts each for some new dumb problem i had to work around.

If you use DVD it is no problem. Take backup of the Dragon Age folder in "my documents", uninstall, reinstall, and update to patch 1.02a.

If you use Steam it is not possible to downgrade.

Note that you cant play Awakening without 1.03. I only played 1-2 hours as I will not let these horrible bugs ruin a great gaming experience. It's hard to wait, so I hope to see a patch soon. Can play on PS3 if it takes very long, but it is much funnier on PC, so I will give it a few more days.
