Hi all,
I've only played as a soldier so far because I wanted weapons and ammo flexibility. Thing is, I've noticed I only ever switch between assault and sniper rifles. I usually send my two squadmates (Zaeed and Garrus/Grunt/Miri) a little bit ahead of me to hold meleers at bay while I snipe and then switch to my AR if things are getting hairy.
I can't for the life of me get the hang of shotguns (tried Vanguard and died more times than I cared to count) and am usually too absorbed in the gunfights to remember about biotics (I leave that to my squaddies and I react to what they do to focus fire on their targets) so that leaves the other classes out.
Because of all the above I want to give an Infiltrator a a go but I don't have a clue how resistant they are to enemy fire (I play in Veteran, only). With my soldier, even if I time it perfectly and coordinate the whole squad at all times I will usually get hit by at least one enemy while I pop up to put a Mantis round through their skulls. This brief period of exposure is enough to deplete my shields and take a chunk of my health as well.
Are infiltrators' shields, all else being equal, noticeably weaker? I'm asking because I don't want to go through that blasted intro sequence again just to find out my ME2 skills are too lousy to keep an Infil alive <_<
PS. Zaaed loyalty mission, I'm looking at you!
How resilient are Infiltrators?

Infiltrator plus shotguns is a pretty resilient. If you manage you're cloaking effectively you can tear through enemies no problem. Or you can always go with AR as your bonus weapon for mid range dmg but smg already fills that role well enough. I wouldn't bother taking the widow as a bonus since its not much better then the viper. I managed to beat hardcore with infil/shotty at times not even using my sniper.

The cloak is a great ass-saver. An infiltrator can't take as much pounding as a soldier, no, but being able to make all enemies instantly forget you exist for 6-9 seconds is just as good if not better.

Well... I took the Viper and Shotguns, so my sniping leaves me longer exposed and I have a tendency to run forward for some cloaked-shotgun-to-the-face hilarity. As far as Infiltrator's go mine is pretty suicidal, and I still got through Insanity with most of my hair intact.
If you want to play it safer, staying at long range with the Widow, you'd probably die a lot less than I do.

Thanks for all the replies!
The cloak+shotgun combo sounds terrific but I fear my FPS skills are sadly not good enough. I did some experimenting yesterday and while I was able to destroye a Praetorian with my warped Mantis (plus judicious application of Adrenaline Rush + Concussive shots) I tried using husks for shotgun practice and all I got was one bite mark too many...
It's a shame I can't get the Revenant as an Infiltrator but I guess it would be too much on top of a slowed-down-while-zoomed-in viper wielding, cloaked, death dealing machine.

as far as pure health/shields, the answer is no. But Cloak is a god when you are swarmed: cloak fall back to cover and take it to 'em again. Also, taking cover and pre-aiming your reticle is important(your reticle will scope in on the center of your unscoped crosshair) this can allow you to line up crucial headshots before enemies find cover. If played right, I feel infiltrators are more resilient overall. My typical combat consists of: Incinerate an armor, sick the squad on them; snipe the dude taking pottshots from across the room; reave you, thanks for the health and dying too; flanker? Cloak, switch cover, scope.....waiit for it......comes around corner, BOOM HEADSHOT! Thank you, thank you very much, I will be here until 5 signing autographs next to your dead companions.

I only play on insanity nowadays so, resilence is the last thing which is important - you die in seconds out of cover anyway. Infiltrator has great abilities, most notably assassination cloak and sniper focus - which triggers EVERYTIME you zoom in with your sniper rifle.

To be honest with you, if you're not good at lining up the cross-hairs (assassin) or quick with CQC (agent), the Infiltrator isn't the best class for you. Also, the solider has noticeably more health, especially with the class passive, but shields seem similar.

Lining up cross-hairs is precisely what I'm good at when at range. It's all about waiting for that little side-step most enemies take in between bursts of fire. I aim slightly to the left/right, wait for the pause, zoom-in, pull trigger, watch blood spray everywhere. Same when they duck behind cover: usually you can give them a free hair cut if you are ever so slightly above them, if not all it takes is to squeeze a round as soon as you detect motion.
It's the running and shotgunning collectors in the face that I'm terrible at. I will usually graze the space bar at the worst possible time making me go behind cover....with my exposed butt facing the enemy. Critical Mission Failurity ensues
It seems tactical cloak will be a godsend for when I screw up my flanking manouvers. That and it seems it will mesh quite well with 3-round bursts of Viper fire.
EDIT: @ burncykle yes, Yes, YES! *hysterical cackling*

Personally, I Love the Viper for soldiers but Hate it for infiltrators. You only get 2.5 or so seconds of time dilation with infiltrator, unlike the 5 or so seconds with soldier. I have much better luck with the Mantis and Widow for infiltrator. If you are good at lining up crosshairs, you should go for one shot kills. That means Mantis followed by Widow (once you get it). I see no reason an infiltrator shouldn't get the Widow if you're not into shotguns.

How (where, when) do you get a shotgun with an Infiltrator ?

I use cloak a little differently. Instead of using it every time it's available I focus on headshotting normal or melee mobs. If I'm down to half health I activate cloak for another free kill then wait for my shields to regen. With enemies dying fast the health, or lack of it doesn't seem to matter much.

Infuiltrator is a very good class, especially if you like sniping. The time dilation when you scope a target allows you more time to line up that headshot, tac-cloak covers your arse when moving between cover, or when getting flanked by husks or varren.
Even 1 point of AI hacking saves your arse on geth/mech missions, add Dominate (if you have unlocked it) and you can have so much fun having the enemy kill each other as you sneak past cloaked.
The only downside of Infiltrators is a quick way to remove barriers. Once you get the widow, you dont really have to worry about it as much.

You can choose to take Shotgun, Assault Rifle or Widow near the beginning of the Collector Ship mission, around halfway through the game.

My first ME2 class was infiltrator, and I couldnt get the hang of it until my insanity playthrough (3rd). So my advice is: get to it, find cover. Use incinerate and duck a lot.
I hate to admit it but I got good ideas for playing on youtube. Just type in infiltrator ME2 and have fun. For general gameplay ideas have a look at vids by sinosleep, thataveragegatsby, thisisme8 (has infiltrator vids too). These are MY favorites, but there are plenty of great stuff out there (sabresandiego, kronner, nexolek etc.)

How do you get Dominate as a bonus power? I'm not seeing it as an option.

You need to have a high enough paragon/renegade to resist Morinth, then choose her over Samara at the end of Samara's loyalty mission.
Note that you can simply do this to unlock the power without saving the game, then reload and choose Samara.

Thanks for all the tips, guys!
I started a new game with an Infiltrator. Following your advice, working a treat!
I have confirmed, however, that I'm a total spazz moving around the battlefield. See, I went straight to Zaeed's mission (after getting Mordin, I love that guy), because I wanted to test the Infiltrator in the last mission I'd run with my soldier.
So I get into the big room full of nasties and position myself and my squad so I can engage the mech from my side of the room. Bang, incinerate, bang, bang x 2 and the mech is down. High-fives all around. I figure I have to reach the door, mercs be damned right? What could I possibly use for that...
I'm sitting behind cover one obstacle before the first two merc-spawning gates. I hit cloak and prepare to run but because I'm a spazz I double tap the space bar, then I hit it again, finally after my morning's calisthenics are over I jump over cover and start running only for the cloak to promplty vanish just as I draw level with a shotgun-totting Turian devil that had just come out of the room to my left. "OHNONONOnooo..SHIAT!" *BANG* *THUD*
-Critical Mission Failure-
I *heart* this game
PS. Anybody knows if there's an accuracy upgrade for the SMG? I'm trying but I swear I can't hit the broadside of a bloody tectonic plate with it.

No accuracy upgrade for the SMG. But the M-9 Tempest is the response you seek, more rounds greater accuracy and better damage.
As much as I love Tali, I'm not found of her set, and thus my run with my Infiltrator I did recruit her last, after Miranda and Jack loyalty missions. What an idiot, I completely foresaw we got the M-9 Tempest during Tali recruitment. Doh.

I actually find Tali's mission more fun than most. Then again I never played ME1 so maybe I'm just getting my Geth killing fix in.

Just take the Firestorm flamethrower if you want CQC with infiltrator. Don't ignore Widow and its potential as a sniper rifle.

hate the viper as an infiltrator. I use the Mantis until the widow is avail. Maybe it's just me, but it doesn't feel like a sniper rifle unless it's capable of 1 shot kills. The viper is just an assault rifle with a scope to me.

The widow is essential to infiltrators if you don't want to melee them with shotguns. That rifle even kills the wall behind enemies if you happen to miss them ... and the sound *drool* ...

The Tempest it is then! I never really paid attention to weapon upgrades other than AR and SR and the big individual ones (Legion's rifle, Grunt's shotgun) but it's nice to know there's a better SMG out there for me this time around.
Back to gameplay: one tiny thing I wish was different is how Shep defaults to the pistol after running out of ammo with any other gun. I always make a point to put disruptor ammo in my SMG, then switch to the Mantis and load it with warp ammo so I can go back and forth with each tap of the X key. I thought this would mean I would sitch back to SMG when I ran out of SR ammo but nope. Always goes back to the hand cannon.
I've noticed pistols are every bit as good as SMGs (if not better) so this is just a play style kind of thing for me is all am saying.

The Mantis usually takes two shots...
And it's probably more accurate to call the Viper a scoped Carnifex with quadrupled firing rate and doubled ammo capacity.
Personally, I have 1pt AI Hacking, 1pt Neural Shock and Squad Cryo. I find these things help survivability a lot (and probably contribute to me being cocky enough to fight Harbinger at point blank).
