I received expansion pack, but will not even look at it until I beat the game the first time around. I am almost finished. This may sound crazy, but I was planning on doing a fresh install of original game and then adding expansion pack, as if I am playing it for the first time (pc version). Has anyone tried this or is this a waste of time? When is best time to install or does it not matter? Maybe I'm thinking too hard but I wanted to try fresh install of everything at once. Is this idea good or bad? Would love to hear feedback or those who already installed the game.

I would say after you finished the main game, no?

It doesn't matter really. I've played Origins many times over. When I got Awakening, I was about half-way through a new game, and then switched over after I had a good accumulation of weapons, armor, money etc.

That worked well for me, because I entered Awakening well equipped, and well financed. As a side note, I was pleasantly surprised to see my custom made (modded) weapons transferred perfectly without me having to do anything.

Regardless, you probably should finish Origins at least once before you jump into Awakening so that the story-line makes some sense.

Guess I don't know that much about expansion pack yet. If you can do it again, would you rather start from beginning or not till your more experienced? Either way, I need to beat the game first.

I say either way is fine. But I think a lot of it hinges on you knowing what happens at the end of Dragon Age: Origins. Don't be impatient and wait until you finish the original game, it will pay off in the end (more than likely.)

I'd consider waiting until the many bugs/issues/undocumented features that have been the topic of numerous posts get acknowledged/resolved before installing the expansion.

I started over after finishing the game for a 2nd play-thru. I installed both Origins and Awakening. I guess I thought Awakening would have an effect on Origins (as in expanding the world - I didn't realize it was just an extension of the game), but since there are so many ways you can go with the Origins game anyway, I'm glad I did start over, as there are so many different choices I want to make this time around.

I finished all my characters in Origins before I installed Awakening. I didn't want to play Origins with patch 1.03 where you cannot steal items anymore.

I'd install it in 2011. It may work by then.

I have characters in both DOA and Awakening. But if I were you and if you only play in DAO at the moment I'd say: dont install Awakening till your PC is ready to go there. My DAO got a LOT more instable since installing Awakening. I never had a problem in the 1.02a patch.

Awakening doesn't affect your original game in any way, however that 1.03 patch which comes with the expansion pack might cause some problems, but if you are already running the game with that patch and experience no problems at all, then it really doesn't matter when to install Awakening.

I am seeing now that Awakening does not affect my Origins game in any way. The only good note is that uninstalling and reinstalling everything, including the 1.03 patch, at the same time has not given me any problems so far. Before I finished the game the first time around I installed the patch and was ready to throw my pc out the window during the final battle. I'd spend a good hour on the fight only to have game shut down for no reason, with no recent save points except to begin the final battle once again. Luckily, I was able to finish the game after a few tries, but man was that frustrating. So far second time around I have not experienced one problem, but then again, I am early in the game.

I view Awakenings as a continuation of the DA:O campaign. I plan to play a character all the way through Origins to Awakenings rather than leaving a character to "grow cold" in my memory and I won't remember how to play her.

If you plan to install Awakenings, bear in mind that it comes bundled with patch 1.03 and it will mess with your original game unless you also install Quinn's quickfix. He's just released his fixpack, which fixes over 50 bugs in the game including the Stealing bug.

http://social.biowar...m/project/2563/

It shouldn't cause problems with future patches (obviously he'll review and update this fixpack as and when that happens). I've installed it and it has fixed a lot of minor bugs in the original game. Things like dialogues and missing flags and persistent flags that won't turn off when they should. These are minor bugs that Bioware is not likely to get around to fixing since they're focusing only on major bugs.

Thank you. This is exactly what I am doing. Now that I know Awakening is just a continuation of the game, I have started over and will move into Awakening once game is completed a 2nd time. I just feel better starting Origins from scratch. Now that I have completed once, it will be fun to try different options. I have to say I have not notice the stealing bug. What exactly is that? So far I have not had trouble.

considering Stealing skills,+/- Attribute points, Warden's Keep and many other useful stuff are rendered USELESS in patch 1.03 that comes with Awakening, don't install it until you actually finish the game and are completely ready for Awakening Import

Put it in your desk drawer until there's another patch. It's a bugfest and, in my experience (no mods, PC specs almost recommended etc etc) it crashes constantly.

Bugs and your strange speech impediment?  :)

You're lucky then, mate, since the constant crashing seems fairly common.  Crashing was very rare when I was playing DA:O but it's made Awakening unplayable for me.  Fresh boot is good for about an hour's game time, but if I reload after a crash it does it again pretty much immediately.

Yeah, I've had trouble with crashing too at the end of the game after installing the patch. The second play-thru, with a fresh install and applied patch have not shown any problems, but after reading this I wish I would have waited. I just wanted to install Origins, patch 1.03, and Awakening all at once, including all my DLC. As I said, so far so good, but I'd feel better if they came out with another patch instead of charging for more DLC like Feastday gifts and pranks. It is fun, but they should not have charged for this in my opinion, but that is another topic.

To avoid the crashes, install Awakenings on top of Origins and patch 1.02. The patch 1.03 on the Awakenings DVD does a clean install. You will still have some of the inherent bugs that are in Awakenings but a lot few of the CtD bugs that most people have encountered. DO NOT install patch 1.03 with Origins without Awakenings.

Bioware is a big company. The devs working on new projects are a different team from those doing the bug fixes. That's why they can crank out new DLC while addressing the bug fixes and yes, they are working on a new patch. No details on content or release date at this time.

While that may be true; I wish I could believe that.

Patches were released pretty quickly up till December 21. Then a few weeks later Dragon Age Awakening was announced. It then took several months for a new patch to come out. The March patch itself, was pretty much used to prepare for DA:O character transfers.

Once Awakening was released, you find out that Bioware is already working on a new DA game. Based on this pattern, it looks like the patches are on the back burner.

Patches on back burner? No, they are working on a new patch right now.

What bothers me is why they bothered to release patch 1.03 separately when it already came bundled with Awakenings. If you think about it, there was no need to release patch 1.03 separately and they would have spared a lot of pain and disappointment with the player community.

I can only speculate that they released 1.03 separately in order to address the memory leak problem. However, I think they neglected to do sufficient regression testing to determine what things that patch 1.03 would have broken in the standalone Origins game.

Patch 1.03 works fine if it's installed with Awakenings.

Ahhh, so that's why they crash..

I was wondering that myself, coz I crashed 3 times in 4xOrigins Playthrough and only a single time in 1 Awakening Playthrough

What's CtD btw Posted Image
